Radio Rental, the shop used to be on the High St, remember my dear old Mum, going in and making the payments, I think every week in the early 1970's. Got our first colour telly in 1972. Remember when we first got colour, staring at the BBC test card logo in colour, being just fascinated.

Yes my parents were with radio rentals. No colour tv for me until around 1980! I think the colour licence was more money!!

You're right, colour licence was more money. My dad's mate worked at Radio Rentals in Beckenham High St. Think they had a moody deal going on.

Reminds me of all those nights where I would get home often after an away match and lots of alcohol, put the TV on make a cup of tea and ....................

Wake at god knows what time  to that picture of the TV buzzing that peculiar note, my head aching and my tea cold.

Off to bed for me it was.

I did that once after coming back from a beano in Margate slept upright in an armchair for 8 hours. Never forgotten how hard it was getting my shoes off

We,like many others rented our tv back in the 1970s. Think it was from Visionhire?

We got a brand new bought tv and video recorder in 1984. Both bought with some of my old man shipyard redundancy money.

Thought we were kings.

Remember we rented a decent sized colour TV in 1980, for £12 per month. Brought a Beta ( doh! ) Video in 82/83 for £285!.

the test card picture use to remind me of being off sick from school, no daytime TV in those days. I would be waiting for lunchtime and, pipkins, rainbow,Mr Benn or Mary mungo and Midge, when tele text arrived it was another world, first colour cup final was Fulham v west ham, I was 5, and although my family all Chelsea, I picked hammers as my team as well as Chelsea after that final, my old man not impressed, grew out of it thankfully, hate the pikies now!!!

Remember with the old TVs that when there were problems with sound and/or picture that a good thump on the side would fix them. If an engineer was called out, one of the first things they did was to give the telly a good thump.

If I remember correctly when ceefax was rolled out in the seventies an aunt and uncle of mine bought a box so they could receive ceefax. What a great idea ceefax (and also teletext and oracle) was for finding out information before the internet. Page 300 for sport.

Years ago I replaced my old CRT TV with a flat screen TV. I took the old telly to the local tip. I live in a flat and hurt my back lugging the old telly down the stairs. I'd forgotten how heavy the old telly was.
