There was definitely a hooligan pecking order. As I said Chelsea would regularly lord it wearing colours in Palace's backyard, but wouldn't do so in East London I'm sure.

From as far back as I can remember, West Ham were always known as number one in London. Even at 10 years old I was aware of an unofficial hooligan league table- older blokes, brothers, cousins etc used to put us in the picture.

When I started secondary school and going to aways on the Monday morning you'd boast to your mates that Chelsea took a certain home end, and there would be chatter about whether Arsenal or West Ham did the same.

I never saw West Ham take the Shed. The night game in 79 they had a few little mobs here and there who got sussed and run out. September 1980 they were by the tea bar with Chelsea all around them.

I think up and down the country we put on more of a show than them late 70s, early 80's, but we avoided Upton Park until late season 81.

If my ageing memory is correct, around 1970 West Ham were the first London team to have a mob behind each goal. Their South Bank one being the Mile End firm, most of whom were blokes older than the average age of the majority of us back then, which made a lot of difference.
In 72 & 73 their tactic was to enter the Shed, keep quiet until around 2.30pm, then out came the scarves & havoc ensued.
Re Upton Park, there were stories back in 70 & 71, unconfirmed, that Arsenal went into the North Bank once, and Spurs ( when Ronny Parish from Bethnal Green was their 'main man') as well?.
Previously I've given a report on here, when in 71 a large mob from Stockwell steamed the North Bank ( watched it happen from the South Bank! ), then got run out. Tottenham did the same in 76 with the same fate.
As you correctly comment, it wasn't until the early 80's that us & the 2 North London teams, started going there in numbers ( new generation! ).
Without a doubt, Upton Park was a ground in the 70's that if you went there following your team, you never felt comfortable, & were always looking over your shoulder.
Outside of London, i'd say the pecking order for London's main teams late 70's early 80's 'putting on a show' were us, Spurs, & West Ham / Arsenal joint last.
An example of how the whole situation has changed over the decades, was back in 96 took my Southend Utd supporting sons to West Ham to see them in the F.A Cup (one also is a CFC fan ). They had Southend Utd tops on, we went in the Queens pub next door to Upton park station, no problem. Back in the 70's if that game had happened, no way would I have let them wear their tops, let alone think of going into The Queens pub!.

A West Ham mate of mine said it first got serious at West Ham the day they played Man United 72 I think it was it's on YouTube. Apparently United would take the piss down there but this day a load of East End dockers went and it kicked off with United getting run onto the pitch.

17/11/1979 and it's us v Charlton at The Bridge, Enjoy.

I was at that game I cleaned out my old Post Office savings account (the blue book one) it had 50p left in it just to keep the account going but I never touched it again. The reason I remember was that date is my sister's birthday so I had to buy her a present but obviously Chelsea came first.

I'm sure in 67 when Man Utd won the league, their Stretford End were in the North Bank & basically took it through sheer numbers. Think it was in Bobby Charlton's autobiography, that he commented on that game & said every time he looked towards the North Bank, fans were getting taken out injured after continuous trouble throughout the game.
Man U did the same in Arsenal's North Bank in 68 or 69, & no doubt in the Park Lane end.
Sure I read somewhere that they all stood in the Shed once when we played them around this time?.
First time I saw us at Upton Park was in 69 ( 0-0 ! ), remember walking past the South Bank after game, & heard the chanting of 'Chel-sea' etc as our lot were coming down the stairs, probably with D.H at the front. No idea if anything happened, as more interested in joining the massive queue, to get into Upton Park station

Boxing Day 1981 and its the highlights of QPR away.

Used to love going to these boxing day games our annual takeover of the ground. Our second goal is remarkable Fillery takes the freekick and the ball doesn't touch the floor thereafter.

Plastic pitch, blood seeping through Mickey Droy's shorts.....He was a tough bastard, and a real leader back then.

Everyone wearing new Xmas clothes and glad to get out having spent the previous day cooped up at their parents.

I only went to QPR once before they rebuilt the ends and turned it into a Lego stadium. Not sure why they bothered. For the sake of a bit more seating they knocked about 8000 off their capacity.

Ps one year a geyser standing behind us in the School End was doing some horrific post Xmas dinner farts- it was so packed you couldn’t move away.

Probably ate too many Brussel Sprouts, my old man never eats them or garlic.

I used to go there a lot, it was a nice ground before they developed it, I never once went in the School End though, always The Loft.   Never had to fight to take it thought, just turn up and stand there.

Nothing more rancid than the football fart could bring tears to a glass eye.

The smell of burgers, beer and football farts, proper old skool football, nowadays we have sushi, wine and perfume!!

I do enjoy a burger - pretty much ANY burger - could live on them to be honest.

But give me a good old fashioned plain burger with loads of onions on it in a nice crusty roll, rather than the poncy burgers you get these days full of salad and sh*t in some soft, doughy roll or some fancy thing that costs about 5 times the price!

From memory I think there were 3 or 4 of those burger trolleys on the Fulham Road. The proprietors all ways looked like they'd just come out of nick.

I quite liked the vacuum packed burgers they used to sell in the ground. I think the blokes that sold them used to walk around the stadium with some sort of big plastic tub.

The meat was a bit vulcanised but it tasted Ok.

Yeah, you just can't beat an old-style stadium burger.

The ones I remember best were not from The Bridge but when we used to go to the old Wimbledon Stadium to watch Speedway or Stock Car. I can smell / taste the onions now on those burgers and hot dogs - not a bit of damp lettuce in sight and they always taste better at night - especially mixed in with the petrol smell you got at Speedway and banger racing!
