It is 30 years since a memorable and record-breaking promotion campaign carried the Blues back into the top flight as runaway Second Division champions.

By way of celebration, a new range of Chelsea retro shirts is being launched and fans arriving early for Monday’s West Ham game can meet some of the Blues’ Eighties heroes, and check out the latest additions to our range of retro merchandise in the Chelsea Megastore.

Kerry Dixon, Eddie Niedzwiecki, Joe McLaughlin and John Bumstead are all making an appearance as we relaunch our popular 1988/89 home and away shirts, as well as the distinctive home shirt worn in the 1989/90 and 1990/91 campaigns. They will be in the Megastore at Stamford Bridge between 4pm and 5pm on Monday.

The four will be signing autographs and posing for photos, while reliving their playing days.

You can find all three of those shirts from the 1980s and the full range of Chelsea retro clothing in the Megastore or in our Online Store.

Ray Wilkins. It's a year out. It was 26th Sept 1978, not 79.

Cruyff proved his was still in peak form and the Cosmos dazzled the crowd with their attacking display.  Despite several scoring chances, Dennis Tueart’s 38^th-minute goal was the only Cosmos goal.

It seemed enough for a road victory until New York conceded an 89^th-minute goal by Ray Wilkins to draw 1-1.

Crowd fiddle alert!! Struggled to get in that night, the shed was locked and the north stand terrace was packed as well. They also sold out of programs that night, but was a good game. Enjoyed watching these sort of games as we had no European football!! Saw L A Aztecs, Dynamo Moscow and a few testimonials around this time for Bonetti, Harris, Hutchinson. 

Oh how I love this thread ,whilst I don’t want to live my whole life in the past ,this thread does take me back to special memories time and time again....Hereford at home ,went with my old dad ,sat in the front row of the east stand ,any 5 1 is great but with a goal as good as Ray,s then heh even more special.The highlights were on tv ,see above and in one clip I remember seeing me and my dad on the telly ! it was a big thing for me back then ?

Good points.

 I admit to coming onto this and other threads as 'my time' and have been known to initially come on for say 10 or 15 mins and an hour later be still here !

I just enjoy the history of our club and so enjoy watching again old match footage (on you tube ) and also reading about football in general when I was growing up.

Winning 7-0 away at Walsall  in 1988/89  

4th Feb 1989.

Our scorers were: Well Gordon Durie scored 5 goals !

Durie's goals came in the 4th 12th, 21st,50th and 79th mins. Kevin Wilson scored in the 31st and Graham Roberts in the 60th min, with a penalty.

I always thought of our Kevin Wilson when I heard about Kevin Bloody Wilson on the media and then there were times on the pitch when he messed up and it was, 'Bloody Kevin Wilson!'

He was Kevin bloody Wilson and a lot worse in 1983 it was him who scored the winner against Derby in the cup that started all the seat throwing. Think I mentioned it before so many Chelsea wearing deerstalkers that day.  Roberts fell out massively with Bates over money as I recall.

88-89 wasn't a patch on 83-84 Erks we should have never been relegated in the first place with the team we had. It was a terrible decision by Bates to brush aside John Neal. 88-89 we were terrible for the first couple of months and the terraces were shut and we were getting crowds of 6,000 it wasn't great. I was 18 in 84 and everything just clicked that year on and off the pitch I was earning good money for a 18 year old, the casual scene was in full swing and Chelsea had an exciting young team and we took thousands everywhere we went.

Apart from City away in 89 I can't remember any other memorable games we pissed the league in the end unlike 84 where it went right down to the wire and for a lot us the first time we'd ever seen Chelsea win anything at Grimsby.

Oxford Away was pretty lively, we won 3-2.

We didn't win in the league until the 6th match.

After that we did really well.

Which I believe was partly down to the terraces being shut the first game they reopened we beat Plymouth 5-0. There was a massive hangover around the club after Boro and it took a couple of months to sink in. Both games we clinched promotion 84 and 89 we played Leeds 84 was a celebration 89 while not exactly a muted affair we all knew it was only a matter of time before promotion was confirmed.
