Just watching Man city vs Blackburn on ITV, interesting that both stands down the sides have no fans in the top tiers! With Blackburn having one whole end and still empty seats, makes recent posts regarding loyalty, cost and types of supporter all the more interesting. We had similar replay against Brentford (div 1) and still managed a near full house. So affects other teams as well in the present.

gotta say that was a tremendous effort by our fans up at Anfield, When you are outnumbered 15-1 and the home support is so up for it its easy to give up as you can be totally drowned out.The sad thing is liverpool fans buy into the media bollocks about them being "the best fans in the world"

Cobham. Interesting topic with the attendances. I went to arsenal v chelsea in 86 and the ground was less than half full. It would be interesting if you can to find the average attendance list between 1905-1970. I would be suprised if we were not in the top 2.

interesting article, especially as Roman wanted a walkway from Fulham Broadway into the stadium and was turned down. We have roughly the same now! Apart from 60,000 capacity. Interesting to see if it could have been done in the budget. I know the building strike put up the price for the east stand, but we would have been way ahead of everyone else. Apart from a team to play in it! Don't think Alan Mayes, Eamon Bannon, etc etc would have drawn the crowds.

A crying shame it never happened. Would've been well ahead of its time.

I remember being well excited at the time. I'll dream on.

To be honest in a way i'm glad it never happened, the thought of never experiencing the shed ect doesnt bare thinking about.

Also look at the dual carrigeway they had planned along the Fulham Road, i reckon while as grounds go for its time it'd have been the bollocks but as a supporters experience i think it might have been just as dour as it is now & we'd have missed out on iconic games & atmosphere's most of us have seen.

Understand your point Carshalton, but I think you would have still have had a similar sort of experience, especially as given they were looking to make it terracing behind the goal.

Your days from the 70's and 80's had more to do with the character of the

RichardP: I don't think Eammon Bannon could have filled a bus stop to capacity to be honest. Never mind a 60,000 all seated Stamford Bridge...

The scouser singing YNWA closest to the camera sounds like a pissed up old dosser after a couple of bottles of cheap sherry.

that describes 35000 of them...be more specific....lol

Says two tier 12,000 east stand. Id say with 12,000 was always three tier.

Early 80s leaflets given out SAVE OUR SHED yet if this had gone ahead the shed would have been long gone. 80/81 season a match programme revealed the shed was going to be pulled down and a new stand behind the goal. Think i still have the leaflet inside the programme.

What was the attitude amongst the fans when these plans were revealed was it positive or negative. Was there leaflets saying no to new ground or did everyone accept it or a mix of opinions.

Just looked it was in the Shrewsbury programme 80/81 season. Says a new three tiered south and south east stand holding 12,000 was going to cost an estimated 14 million pid for by offices being built on the forcourt as you come in. Was going to be the east stand continued round to the west stand.

I don't think any of us believed it would happen, once the east stand had been built it was more about saving the club from property developers than dreams of a fantastic stadium.

There was no negative feedback that I can remember, the club surveyed the fans by questionnaires in the programmes, this was some stadium compared to what was about at the time, something extra for the fans to look forward to. Really was a shame how it turned out.

Don't remember the leaflet, was at the game and always bought a programme. Will have to look in the loft to see if I have one. Can't remember any opinion for or against the proposal back then. Stood in the shed 78-82 before defecting to the benches. As many others have said in this forum I loved being in the Shed. The atmosphere up the back under the roof was fantastic. A goal, near miss or Knees up mother Brown meant you ended up five or six rows from where you stood. Thinking back as a ten year old, I use to stand over towards the East Stand. Moved to the Middle aged 12 and found it quite intimidating but also exciting. Apart from standing the whole game at away matches now, younger fans will never really get that She'd experience.

I bet they had to wait a while to get a picture they could publish, the thing was nearly always half empty in the upper tier. Looks like the pic is against Liverpool and even then the best(and most expensive) seats haven't been bought.

I remember that Save Our Shed leaflet doing the rounds in the Rising Sun.

Have to say our away following to the likes of Derby, Leicester, Notts County, Brighton and Cambridge in the 80's were better than anyone. The battles at Birmingham in the 70's and the great turnouts in Manchester. Happy days on the road, feared and respected and hated by the press and plod.

Great pic, spelling mistake aside...

A great picture that brings back memories. My parents took me down that road to see those decorations before the 1970 Cup Final, it's Slaidburn Street, World's End.
