If you had the power to change 6 things in football,3 on the pitch & 3 off it,what would you choose??.

For me,on the pitch:

1.That old chesnut the offside rule,reactive,proactive,eh, what?,I heard that,pardon?.

Football is a simple game so why make it complicated?.A player should only be offside if there is a clear gap between the attacker & the last defender,if he's level or slightly ahead then he's on side.

And that applies to a pass, free kick, corner or rebound from the goalpost/ keepers crownjewels etc.

2.Goal line technolgy, something simple & reliable,a chip in a ball with sensors behind the goalline & a visible indicator in the stand for ALL to see,(& not Platini's fav officials  ).

3.If a manager has 5 subs why can't he be able to use them all?,to change a game,or correct a selection c*ck up?,why not?,& to stop time wasting,( or Sir Alex),only 1 min of extra time will be allowed however many subs a team makes.

Off the pitch:

1.A wage cap,a bonus for players being paid for performance as a squad & not as individuals. The team prosper, so do they, like the rest of us in the real world.

I loved playing football as a kid,in the street, field, wherever, unlike Tevez, I would have be honered to play for City,(mind you, I would have fainted if it was Chelsea!),unfortunatly,I was useless at it.These guys get paid a fortune to flog crap dayglow football boots,so it's not like they are short of a few bob is it?.

2.Bring back terraces,in this modern age with cameras/stewards everywhere, honestly, why not?.

Modern ticket control,18 years only, modern stadium design,it could work if we had the guts to try.

3.The draws for all the major competitions (including the world cup) to be a true free for all,no seeds, no corporate favours, you get who you get.

Honestly, when was the last time the early stages of a world cup/champions league was truly exciting?.

That's just a few of my ideas but then iv'e just thought about referees,(don't start),maybe I should have made it 7 things!.

1 - I would scrap the offside rule altogether

2 - No substitutions at all to be made after 85 minutes (unless a cup game where extra time could be played and the scores are level after 85 minutes)

3 - Players to remain on the pitch after receiving treatment - too much time is wasted waiting for them to get off the pitch

4 - Yellow and red cards only to apply to the competition they are given in i.e. Premiership bookings/sending offs only apply to that competition and have no impact on FA or League cup games

5 - FIFA to be scrapped forever - waste of space full of corruption

And 6 - I would cap ticket prices so they are the same across all premiership matches for all games

Awesome thread idea.

On-field:

1. Video refereeing and goal-line technology. Football broadcasts go for 2 hours anyway- scrap the sh*tty punditry and "expert analysis" and use the leftover time to allow a match official/4th referee to review crucial, key decisions such as penalties, red cards and especially simulation.

2. Professional foul punishable by a straight red card. I hate the 'professional foul', where a defending player intentionally scythes down a counter-attacking opponent. It is a cynical tactic and should be punishable even if the defender is not the last man. However, this would only be fair and practical if a proper review system was in place.

3. Phase out the 'defensive midfielder'. The 'Makelele role' is exaggerated to the nth degree by every player not named Claude Makelele. In most teams, the defensive midfielder is a either a metronomic sideways passer (Mikel) or a veritable hatchet man (Gattuso). Man City have both (Barry, de Jong). People complain about the "dark old days" filled with grimacing hatchet men more interested in chopping legs than winning tackles but the majority of defenders executed tackles on a weekly basis that modern-day centre-halves execute once a season.

The main one for me is to change the offside rule so that EVERY BLOODY PLAYER ON THE PITCH CAN BE OFFSIDE NO MATTER HOW MUCH THEY ARE DEEMED NOT TO BE INTERFERING WITH BLOODY PLAY! What a ridiculous rule that is, if they arent interfering with play then they shouldn`t be on the frigging pitch.

no way the offside rule should be scrapped, would just have players standing at the goalmouth all day. would be horrendous. The main one would be video technology, in particular with goal line and all that but maybe also a referal system with goals taht are deemed offside.

A robotic ref that never made mistakes would also be good but that may be a few years down the track unfortunately

1, The pitch should be a uniform size for every club, lets see if Stoke have such a great home record after that.

2, Offside should mean exactly that, interfering or not, its still offside.

3, Get rid of the 7 second rule for goalies and bring back the maximum 5 steps rule.

4, Refs and assistants have to give a press conference within 30 mins of the final whistle explaing their decisions and why they were given.

5, All cards should be reviewable be that red or yellow and a final decision released 48 hours after the final whistle.

6, Safe standing areas should be introduced, the atmosphere at football is nowhere near what it once.

1. Offside rule be reviewed and if you are going to use technology on the goal line then use it for offside, and like the NFL the manager has 3 calls for review during the game to reverse decisions, once the 3 are done there is no more challenging. You'll have to accept the refs decision.

2. Like everyone has said - goal line technology is a must

3. When a player gets a yellow he gets sent to the penalty box for 5 minutes (just like ice hockey) so the opposing team have a 'power play' giving them the advantage...might stop some cynical fouls. Two yellows is 15 minutes but can play for the rest of the game but misses the next game. 3 yellows and your off!

4. Top 6 PL teams do not play in The Carling Cup - they have too many games in Europe to worry about this competition

5. Scottish football is almagamated into the Football League - apart from probably 3 teams the rest are just about Championship standard

6. A transfer cap be placed on each team - if they go over the cap then a points deduction is incurred (other sports have a financial penalty but the rich teams don't give a toss anyway). Transfer fees will also have to be curbed which will no doubt piss off the agents.

1. If caught diving / been proven to have cheated horribly = 3 game ban.

2. Clear up the mess and inconsistencies with the offside rule

3. Reduce player power / stop obscene wage demands and holding clubs to randsom

4. Take bullying agents out of the game, every player should be old enough and responsible enough to look after themselves.

5. Have a friday night game occasionally.

6. Reduce match ticket prices for us punters by having lower, more controlled and feasible saleries throughout the leagues

I like the Friday night game idea! For me it would have to kick off a little later than normal though, if we said 8:30 that means people going to the game wouldn't have to fly around to get their and anyone watching on TV can get home, or get to the pub again without feeling the need to rush!

Offside rule is the best thing since sliced bread. Allows for more open game where CBs can stand further from the goal. Any chump can stand in the box waiting for long balls, reading/making offside traps makes football a lot more demanding.

For someone to suggest ditching the offside rule is just ridiculous. I dont think id be able to watch that kind of football.

Referees should receive an electric shock for every wrong decision they make, scaling on degree of stupidity. Not as foolproof as video refs but more entertaining I think.

1. Ban the loaning of players to clubs in the same Division.

2. Scrap the Carling Cup or at very least take the European place away.

3. Bring back standing

4. Abolish international friendlies.

5. Don't let ITV anywhere near football.

6. If a clubs goes bust, wind them up and make them start from stratch at the bottom of the pyramid.

Having seen video replay used to an excruciating degree in American football, and still seeing mistakes being made, I'm basically against it. You can just as easily get the call wrong without video technology and the game will flow much better.

I've finally come to terms with the notion that perfect refereeing is impossible. I'm willing to live with the mistakes. My only exception would be goal line technology, which is a simple yes/no electronic thing, like in tennis.

1/ Regular post-match review of yellow and red cards. No appeal necessary. If the ref got a card wrong, fix it. If the ref missed something really bad, punish the player. Players shouldn't get away with murder just because the officials missed it.

2/ Goal line technology. But that's it. No other in-game reviews.

3/ If a manager has used all his subs and then a player is injured, allow an extra substitution to replace the injured man.

4/ A payroll cap would be desirable. But it would be impossible to apply across Europe or worldwide. I'm putting it here just because it would solve a lot of problems and make smaller clubs competitive.

5/ Post-match video review of diving. If it is determined by video that a player is guilty of obvious diving, give him a post-match yellow card. Worldwide. Watch Danny Alves' head explode.

No, I am totally against that, since it will lead to even more playacting. At least having to leave the pitch gives some penalty against playacting. Actually, I would rather make it so that the player has to stay out for a minute or two, just to encourage players to get on with it.

I agree. Refs don't do enough to punish the actors. They should make them stew on the sideline for longer than they do.

Changes 1 - 5, take 5 european trophys of the dippers, shut them right up.

Change 6 - take 10 years of Frank Lampards age...

Sorry to be pedantic, but making 5 subs when only a maximum of 1 minute will be allocated would actually encourage time-wasting, not the other way around! But I do agree that teams should be allowed to use the full (5/7) subs at their disposal, if they want to.

Almost a better idea would be that for every sub by a winning team after 85 minutes an extra 5 minutes of time will be played! That would deffo stop it!

1. Reintroduce tackling

2. Take away yellow and red cards, 5-15 minute sin bin instead

3. Reintroduce real footballs

4. All free kicks to be indirect

5. Goalkeepers must stand still before penalties

6. Teams only allowed two overseas players

1. The pitch should be a uniform size for all clubs, in all leagues, in all countries, etc.

2. Goal line technology is a must.

3. Change the offside rule. If you're offside, you're bloody offside. All 11 on the pitch are in the play damnit.

4. Red and yellow cards should only apply to the competition that they are issued.

5. If someone is deemed to be diving... Straight red. That will stop that sh*te, quick.

6. Refs should explain any questions about yellow or red cards immediately after the match. I believe someone said within 30 minutes, that's a good time. At least we would then know the reason behind the decision.
