Zenit St Petersburg fans want black and gay players excluded

A Zenit St Petersburg supporters' group has called for non-white and gay players to be excluded from the team.

The Russian champions' largest fans' group, Landscrona, said in an open-letter that black players are "forced down Zenit's throat".

They added that gay players are "unworthy of our great city".

Urgh. Utterly disgusting.

I wonder if this means a sneaky bid for Hulk could be worthwhile though? ;) I don't think the club will want to sell him, if not purely to show they won't cave to these ignorant cretins, but I don't think he's going to be very happy there after hearing the fans say this.

To be honest, I'd be tempted by a cheeky bid for Witsel too!

So if your a hetrosexual white Australian player, your'e ok, but if your'e a non white or gay Russian, your'e not wanted.

Bit thick these Russians aren't they.

But will someone come on and accuse of us being intellectual liberal Guardian-reading  twats if we object to this blatant homophobic racism?

Are there no laws in Russia which prevent such open display of contempt for all standards of decency and respect for equality of the individual regardless of race or sexual orientation?

Surely in the UK this would be interpreted as incitement to racial and homophobic hatred?  Or am I wrong?  lawyer people, tell me... (Youlots?)

Inspiring stuff.

A Chelsea FC supporters' group has called for non-slim and Spanish managers to be excluded from the team.

The European champions' largest fans' group, the Shed End, said in an open-letter that fat Spanish managers are "forced down Chelsea's throat".

They added that fat Spanish managers are "unworthy of our great city and should f**k back off to that northern sh*thole you seem to be so fond of".

Racism and homophobia in particular are rife in Russia and still seen as acceptable. Ridiculous.

The supporter group has now come out with a statement saying that they have never said they don't want black players. They've just prefered the club to prioritise players close to Russia.

Basically I guess that means a black russian is okay.

But it seems gay players is still not okay. Disappointing, but not surprising. As long as there's even managers who don't want gay players there will always be a problem.

As for the "no black players" thing, I'm quite sure that I've heard about the supporter group not accepting black players before, so maybe this statement from them isn't exactly truthful.

Would not surprise me one bit. I've heard a few things about that supporter group and it's not exactly good things.

They make Scousers (modern and older versions) seem almost lovable.

Who care's is up to them. Not everyone in the world has bowed to politically correct brainwashing.

Maybe the CPS should fly over there and demand court cases in everyone's interest with Ferdinand as the ambasador.

So..those of us who find racism and homophobia abhorrent only do so because we have bowed to politically correct brainwashing?  is that what you're saying?

The statement still says that they don't want black players, but they try to justify it as "it's how our team has always been represented" and tried to draw parallels to Bilbao who only use Basque players (though they've played black Basque players so they're clearly different)

Jonathan Wilson wrote a fantastic article on it: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/dec/19/zenit-st-petersburg-open-letter

f**king lol at "politically correct brainwashing".

Basically I guess that means a black russian is okay.

Don't know about that... I drank five Black Russians in an hour once, fell off my bar stool, and next day had the worst hangover of my life. I'm with the Zenit supporters on this one.

Idiots.

So, Nitro, are you going to answer this question?  Are you going to give us an in-depth analysis of your reasons for accusing us of being brainwashed?  I am going out now, and if you have not replied by the time I get back I will give you my in-depth analysis of what your reasons might be.

From one who has been racially abused the answer is quite simple:-

Who are us and how would you know.

"Us" is the people whom you accused of having bowed to "politically correct brainwashing."

I would not necessarily know, which why I said "What your reasons MIGHT be."

Given that you have been racially abused, it seems all the more illogical for you to condemn those who object to racial abuse as having bowed to "politically correct brainwashing."

Can you not conceive of there being decent minded people who genuinely believe that all human beings are entitled to respect, regardless of race, creed or sexual orientation?

I find this an interesting topic. I do believe that to be homosexual goes against natural human instincts (I know that will offend many but it's not intended to), but I don't understand discriminating against people from different backgrounds or with different views.

I guess for me if a group of people want to stipulate who they will/wont mix with or support, I don't mind that - in fact I prefer people to be honest. But the Russian league should be steadfast in upholding FIFA's rules (even though FIFA aren't strong enough to!), in making the game one open to everyone without prejudice.

I don't think criticism of the supporters club is necessarily justified but if the club took any notice of them without action from the Russian authorities they should receive criticism.

Bring it on, I know that wont be a popular view.

Jonathan Wilson's article on the Guardian website about this affair is a good one, the background is actually more complex than most of the English media's coverage would suggest.

An excellent article which does shed a different light, while still recognising that homophobia and racism are a problem.
