The Issue with our Transfer Policy this Summer

Featured Replies

I've been very negative on a lot of threads regarding the decision to loan Lukaku so I want to explain what I feel to be the problem with our transfer policy this summer.

Once Jose was appointed, it was clear that our no.1 priority was to sign Top Class striker. So we chased after Falcao and Cavani, both of whom would have been excellent signings, but we watched as they were bought by Monaco and PSG respectively. According to various reports, our offers for both players were in the £40 million range, roughly £10 million off what would have been sufficient.

So after haggling over those transfer fees, the club then decided to spend £30 million on Willian, a player who we had absolutely no need nor room for in our squad. Schurrle, Moses and KDB - easily enough quality for AMR. And this transfer was done seemingly just to spite a rival club who probably won't be much of a threat to us anyway this year and to satisfy another one of Roman's ill-thought wims. Then we fritter away £3.5million on Atsu, who now happens to be the 10th AM on our books.

To compound the problem further, we end up loaning out our most effective striker in Lukaku because, for various different reasons, we can't shift Ba or Torres.

So, whilst we may have had a terrific strike force of Cavani, Lukaku +1 with which to contest the title, we will have to put up with the mediocrity of Eto'o, Torres and Ba. And all because of our irrational transfer policy.

I've said it before and ill say it again you can't judge Eto'o until you've seen him play for us and better yet you can't judge the team until you've seen what they've done.

If we end up winning the title this season some people are gonna have to eat crow.

I don't think its the transfer policy you are upset with. You are probably more upset that we didn't sign a big name striker and it doesn't sound as bad if you question the whole policy.

We want Rooney, it didn't happen so we got the stop gap Etoo till we try again in Jan/Summer.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Mourinho is pretty happy with how things went at the end of the day.

Even if we had offered the extra 10M for the likes of Falcao orCavani that does not mean that they would have come to us. We may not have been prepared to offer astronomical wages and if that is the case I say rightly so.

Falcao going to Monaco speaks volumes of the players ambition.

We didn't sign Falcao or Cavani because we were tight with the cash. Yet we spend £30 million on Willian, a player that we don't need, whilst we desperately needed to improve our strikeforce.

Falcao had little say in the matter. His economic rights are owned by an Investment Company who refused to do business below £50m, because they felt that any price lower than that would have been an insufficient return on the investment. Seeing as Monaco were the only club prepared to offer this much, Falcao had no choice but to go there.

We bought players that were available, affordable, and willing to come to Chelsea. Any club in Europe would be happy to have Falcao or Cavani; they went to the highest bidder, and I can completely understand us not getting tangled up in a transfer fee/bidding war with the French clubs. When you rule out Lewandowski, who clearly has his heart set on Bayern, and eventually Rooney, there's not many other 'top strikers' that were available.

Look at the rest of the signings made across Europe; for £30m, Willian is a good addition. Yep, he plays in our strongest position, but we had an opportunity to add a quality player to the squad, and we took it. I'm happy. Eto'o's a good addition too, when you consider what was available, his undeniable quality, and how little we got him for, I'd say it's a great signing for the club.

I also don't agree that Lukaku is "our most effective striker", certainly not yet. He had a decent time with WBA last season, and an ok pre-season. Certainly there've been some flashes of brilliance in there (the Man Utd game of course, and a couple of neat finishes in pre-season), but he's far from the finished article. Low pressure, lots of game time, opportunities in Europe. I think that's a clever move for club and player. He'll break into our XI regularly one day, but it didn't appear like it was going to be this season, and we didn't keep him to allow him to disappear into the reserves.

And the wages? Think of the wages. Which I know is a bit hypocritical after going for Rooney but you know they aren't earning peanuts at their new clubs

To have a pop at this club for being stingy with transfers is absurd. I'm actually glad we showed some sense and chose not to spend the greater part of £100m on Cavani/Falcao's transfer fee and wages.

I quite agree, people have forgotten how lucky they are to support a club in the position we are.  The same ones who were calling for Lukaku to start on Friday probably.

Well said mate,I never really thought I would see a day, where we would be in position to go toe to toe with one of Europe's giant clubs such as Bayern Munich on such an equal standing.

Just enjoy it for f**k's sake!.

Would like to have seen us actively pursue Lewandowski with the same purpose we did going after Rooney, didn't see much evidence of a big big offer, which is a complete shame...

Unbelievable, this kind of thing Is so petulant and Spoilt. We only spent £70 million, it's so unfair.

Probably something like f**k going to England where I'll be taxed to the hilt, Monaco will do me and his owners agreed.

we have only played 3 games! perhaps a bit more gametime will allow us a better insight to see whether the team has improved with the additions. i'm quite sure the sense of disappointment will vanish throughout the season.

There shouldn't be any disappointment though.  You can't always have what you want, even with that other thing in charge last year we stiill won a trophy.

Wish we had got a CM destroyer but we had a good summer, we just got our business done early aside from the Rooney gambit.  The last day just felt a bit anticlimactic as Gem said, and everyone losing their sh*t over Mata wasn't good for the stress levels.

Taking his comment out of context to beat him with is a douche bag move mate. Im sure he fully appreciates the position we are in.

However he, like many in this forum IS questioning the £32 Mil spend on a player we could do without due the strength of players we already have in that position when we could look to have spend that EXACT same money to secure someone who plays upfront where it is categorically stated we are in need of strengthening. Is Willian £32 Mil better than Moses? especially seeing as Mata, Hazard, KDB and Oscar are in competition for those places, Shúrrle offers something different in the same space

Lets be straight here if reports are true we only bid £25 Mil MAX for Rooney £32 Mil would be closer to the mark, £40 Mil would be about his market value, we have paid £7Mil to have Eto'o in the squad and allowed Lukaku and Moses to move.

My guess is that 99% of Chelsea fans would rather have Rooney, Moses and Lukaku (all English trained so no squad issues (lukaku?)) in the Team than Willian, Eto'o and Ba even though barring loan fees that is about the same cost to Chelsea. this is not about how unfair it is that Chelsea have spent money, more that they have spent money in the wrong places, which especially with FFP coming in is precisely what we need to avoid.

Other strikers who have been available over the window who could have strengthened us for less than £32 Mil... Jovetic, Negredo, Saldado, Tevez, Lukaku(!lol!) i know these all moved to other clubs and were not neccesarily Chelsea bound but its food for thought.

My grudge is we didn't really do enough to fix the striker situation. We tried and we tried but we still have Torres.

Also the CM spot was not completely fixed. If Jose starts playing Oscar in the CM spot and it works like a charm that's okay but it looks Lampard is the main man with Rambo...well it is okay but should be better.

Good thing is we have a lot of youth with MvG, KDB, Oscar, Schurrle and so on. Squad looks good and strong and with a lot of promise. All in all we did well.

Although I will accept that I trust JM, if he thinks Torres, Ba and Eto'o are good enough then who am I to judge he HAD the finances and used them elsewhere. If FSW had done the same.........

Shotgun, its his second post I took a dislike to. We didn't sign cavani because we were tight? Come on, one thing we are not as a club is bloody tight.
