Back Up Striker - The Veteran Option

Featured Replies

Just seen that Luca Toni at 37 years of age was second top scorer in Serie with 20 goals for Verona.

We know Pizarro has been playing that role for Bayern. 11 goals I believe from 6 starts and around 17 sub appearances.

A player of this kind would, imo, be best to give Costa and Lukaku the kind of minutes they'll be expecting.

Are there any decent 30+ year old forwards you'd like the club to sign? Veteran forwards who'll be content with the third striker role?

(And Drogba doesn't count!)

Samuel et'oo  says hello, look he is even mocking Jose with the hat.

I say let's call him bad names the naughty man.

I would have taken Defoe as someone who is back-up / happy to be third choice and someone who has PL experience and will always score goals. But now he is in the US getting paid silly money, don't suppose he is an option. Other than that, I would rather see a young & hungry striker (Bamford etc) rather than an oldie happy to pick up their pay cheque each week.

Champions's league knockout game, one of Costa or Lukaku is unavailable.and you need to sub on a striker to replace the one who's already on on the pitch for whatever reason.

You see a Luca Toni, an Eto'o, a defoe on the bench and you'd have no misgivings bringing them on.

Same scenario, but now you see Bamford on the bench instead...

Just because I always wanted to see the mental bar steward at Chelsea, I want Antonio Cassano.

dkw, was thinking of Cassano right after I posted the thread. He is 31 I think.

Different to other forwards as well.

Not sure if he'll be happy as third choice though.

Nitpicking, but Toronto is in Canada

I tihnk the veteran striker option is going to be filled by Torres or Ba.  Can't see the club getting rid of both of those, and then signing a veteran striker.    I think it it most likely we go into the season with marque signing/Lukaku/Bamford or Torres/Ba.

With Bamford, would you not think it would disrupt his development by getting such limited game time?

Both Torres and Ba will want more than what playing time Ba was given this season. Both are young enough to want to play key roles in a team. Shifting Ba would mean 7-10 million and and getting rid of Torres would free up a lot of wages.

Picking up a senior player who'll be genuinely happy with a 'Ba' role would be best imho. Cheap, Lowish wages, gives Costa and Lukaku enough games to keep them both happy whilst providing valuable experience when called upon.

We already have Eto'o. No need to look further.

I've noticed a few times now you keep mentioning eto. He is gone! Don't think it's been officially confirmed by the club yet but he himself has pretty much stated it considering he has called our manager a puppet

No more than loaning him out to the lower divisions again will limit his development.

Loaning youngsters out to that standard of football can only develop players so much. Eventually you need to put them in the squad alongside the players you intend them to one day play with against opposition of the standard you expect them to one day play week in week out against and see how they develop from there.

After the season he just had I'd like to see what Bamford could do for us, and if Lukaku and another top striker are brought in then being around them and learning from them could do him more good than loaning him out.

He may well need another loan before he's ready for a role with us but I'd definitely prefer Bamford to Luca Toni.

Hehe, Toni is 37, so he's an extreme case. Mentioned him because I was astonished to see his age when seeing the top scorers list for Serie A.

I'd like to see Bamford have a year on loan at a premier league side, personally.
