Following Our Nearest and Dearest Rivals, 2014-15

It's not impossible though is it? I admit I think it will be difficult but Arsenal play better away from home when the pressure is off.

An early goal changes everything for them.

When they brought on Walcott they could have scored a few because of the sheer pace of the frontline.

Hopefully Monaco can counter them to the effect of last night.

I still think they will go through for some reason.

I'm sure you'll all be shocked to hear that Liverpool fans are offended.

The crime?

Official sponsor Dunkin' Donuts replaced the Hillsborough eternal flames on the clubs logo as part of a lighthearted promotion.

The heartless bar stewards.

Do you think any other team's fans would be any less offended in the same position? It was a very crass thing for Dunkin' Donuts to do, although I suspect they had no idea of the meaning of the flames.

He waited all night for one chance, and when that chance came, did you notice how he took his time?

I was screaming at the telly imploring him to shoot as the defenders converged on him, but he wasn't flustered one bit.

Composure personified.

What a finish.

Baby David has quite a serious man-crush here, innit?

I don't know really, in this case I think it's clearly a harmless marketing campaign.

Yes the flames have a deep meaning but really you can't be so precious about everything, it's not like Dunkin' Donuts are mocking Liverpool/Hillsborough.

If we had a sponsorship with Compare The Market and they did a mock up of our badge replaced the lion with their meerkat I can hand on heart say I wouldn't be offended... I might roll my eyes at it but that's where it would end.

It's understandable to be fair. He's like Malbranque, one of those players who is so good that you can forgive the fact they played for Tottenham. Plus he was brilliant last night.

That's completely different though, surely you can see that? I also wouldn't say it's excessively precious for people to object to a multinational company trivialising (albeit, I think, unknowingly) something that's supposed to be a tribute to the dead.

As much as I resent big business, I think it's pretty clear there was no offence intended there whatsoever. Plus imitation is the highest form of flattery, etc...

You've hit the nail on the head here but there's no doubt this will get the chins wagging on Merseyside. Just waiting for some tin-pot politician to stand up in parliament and label all Donuts a disgrace.

Liverpool fans, Addicted to grief.

Does it trivialise the tribute? I don't know, maybe I'm giving Dunkin' Donuts fair too much lenience here but it's fairly clear to me it was intended as a bit of fun by one of the clubs sponsors, I mean, it would have looked a bit silly leaving in the flames wouldn't it?

I just don't get this sense of needing to be offended by everything nowadays and that isn't exclusive to Liverpool fans.

I agree. I firmly believe that the ability to laugh at yourself is key to retaining your sanity.

Oh I agree and I've said a couple of times that Dunkin' Donuts probably had no idea what they were doing. My point was that it wasn't entirely unreasonable that people would object to it, and that I believe fans of our (or any other) club would probably have reacted in a similar way.

That said, I understand that people like to make certain generalisations about Liverpool fans, which I find ironic considering some of the views people expressed here in the aftermath of the Paris incident (I'm thinking about the Stan Collymore thread).

I think it definitely trivialises the tribute regardless of whether it was intentional or (most likely) not. It was just a terrible idea and it understandably upset some people, and after realising their mistake Dunkin' Donuts pulled the marketing campaign. I don't think there's much more to say about it to be honest.

Was it during a match?!

Unfortunately not:

The description on the video claims the incident took place at the ground in south east London, with the pair having broken into the stadium at night.

Sex Addicks.

Brilliant, bravo sir!

As an interesting aside I am actually the great-grandson of Sam Bartram, who made more appearances for Charlton than anybody else in their history, and which is also why my family is so fond of Charlton.

We used to have a Sam Bartram plaque on the wall but I'm not sure what happened to it after we moved house (this was a good fifteen years ago now).
