Giving your own players stick

Featured Replies

How many Chelsea players can you think of who've had our own fans turn against them?

Trevor Aylott springs to mind. He made a name for himself scoring in the 3-1 against the bin dippers, and it rapidly went downhill from there. Rember a game when half the shed were chanting AYLOTT OFF. Couldn't help but feel a bit sorry for the bloke. He was standing there hand on hips shaking his head.

Alan Mayes weren't too popular either. Not too many cheers when his name was announced on the tannoy. We were coming back from somewhere on the train- passed Swindon where we got him from. The general consensus was shame he weren't on the train so we could sling him back.

This sort of treatment was far more common back then. In my view football fans are far too forgiving now eg. Potato head Rooney holds Man U to ransom post season angling for a pay rise, comes back then the fans chant his name. If we're honest JT did similar when Man City were interested a few years back. Drogba angled for moves too don't forget, but well let them off.

Back on track an ex- player who got some. stick was Clive Walker, who had the temerity to score against us in the semi against Sunderland. Can't remember whether he was given a rough time before the goal, but do recall a fat bloke chasing him around.

Any memories?

Peter Houseman, God rest his soul, Ossie had nothing but good things to say about him. A proper gentleman on and off the pitch, often under-appreciated by the fans, and was just as often the scapegoat among certain sections of the fans.

When things were going well it was:

"Peter, Peter Houseman

Peter Houseman on the wing."

But when things started going tits up, it would be:

"Mary, Mary Housewife

Mary Housewife on the wing"

I remember some fans turning on Joe McLaughlin but for the life of me I can't remember the reason. Anyone know?

As for Walker scoring for Sunderland in the League Cup the rumour at the time - it may be true - is that Speedie punched him in the players' bar after the game.

Regarding JT- for a good month while Man City were trying to pry him away he kept that thing between his nose and chin firmly zipped. He did indeed stay- got a pay rise- went on to say he was never serious about leaving us, he loves us too much etc... Well he could have killed the speculation stone dead a month previous. One of our all time great players, a small blemish on his copybook in my eyes never the less.

Surely being under contract is enough?

Every time a player is linked with a move away from the club I don't feel that they need to come out and publicly comment in the same way that the club itself (as a general rule) does not comment on transfer speculation.

Maybe Terry did get a generous offer from City but ultimately he stayed at the club and continues to be here as our most successful club captain of all time.

I seem to remember that too. His form could be a bit erratic, but on the whole, the McLaughlin / Pates CB pairing did pretty well.

Same sort of period - Darren Wood got a fair bit of stick. I never warmed to him and even less so when Hollins would leave out Nevin and Hazard but play Wood in midfield instead. Would never boo him but there was a lot of groaning when the team was announced and many fans did turn on him.

And of course Dave Beasant some some terrible stick after a period of dropping howlers.

Peter Nicholas. Kevin Wilson. But the worse stick i ever saw a Chelsea player get was when we had Mark Falco on loan from the dustbin lids. Got booed every time he touched the ball.

Joe Mc Laughlin first game of season 88/89 had a shocker. Got some stick during game from the west stand/ benches and he gave a V sign which led to booing. Gave away a penalty for hand ball and we lost 2-1. Newspapers the following day reported that his new born child had died some time before the game and he chose to play. Remember thinking that we forget that these players are human beings and have feelings. Same season remember Darren Wood got stick as well. Others were Graham Wilkins Alan Mayes Tony McAndrew Keith Dublin Keith jones and don't forget Mark Falco on loan from spuds for a month!!! (Why?)

Had forgotten all about Joe giving the V sign to the West Stand/benches. Didn't know about his child dying a few days before the game. Yes, we forget that players have feelings like the rest of us. As Nibs has said, McLaughlin and Pates was a good partnership.

Another player who got stick at the time was Keith Jones.

Missed the game when Beasant made the howler against Norwich (?). Think I was working overseas at the time.

Being a true and honourable footy fan is like being married; one should never criticise a player/spouse in public; save it for behind closed doors, or this forum.

The team were doing a pre-season US tour that summer.  When they came to Seattle there was a large crowd of people outside waiting for autographs etc.  Of course a few fans were asking JT if he was leaving etc while he was signing things.  He replied "There's no way I'm leaving this club.  I wouldn't be out here if I had any intention of leaving." And something along the lines of "Can't say too much else, but believe me when I say I'm staying."

Now, this is all in front of fans, and of course he's unlikely to say "yep, cashing in on this US Tour then farking off to City." However, everything he said that day has came true, and he certainly never went public, as Rooney did, about wanting a move away unless he was paid more.

Graham Wilkins used to get stick, at times ... Unlike brother Ray who was idolised ...

I don't think some Chelsea were **initially** sold on Micky Hazard because he arrived from Tottenham ... at the time I sat in the benches and if things didn't come off for Micky a few CFC were not shy coming forward with the Y word ... but overtime he won them over ...

Just by the Shed T bar one of our fans used to mutter Phillips useless bar steward all the way through the game, even when John Phillips wasn't playing. You may remember him?

I remember John Phillips well - understudy to Peter Bonetti in the 70s. I don't remember him being booed much, but I don't think our record was great when he played.

Trevor Aylott probably got the worst stick I've heard - apart from Paul Canoville, of course, until he won the fans over (with a little help from Pat Nevin, John Neal and Ken Bates).

Stood next to a chap once who had a deep seated hatred for Micky Fillery. It was at QPR and the only time I went there before they developed the ends and turned it into a rabbit hutch ground- 81 probably?

Anyway from the first minute to extra time it was Fillery you this, Fillery you that all in a booming voice. Felt like giving the bloke a head massage to calm him down.

I would say that though individual players could get some earhole, I can't remember hearing the team getting booed too much. Do remember us being so poor that people were laughing. If your a player Im not sure what's worse; having you own fans boo you or double up laughing every time you get the ball.

There was a bit of 'What a load of Rubbish!' Around the time when there were banners in the shed saying Neal Out! Funny as the following season we won the league! Rotherham away 6-0 Forest away around 92? 7-0 humorous singing we want 4 we want 5 as the goals kept going in!

Interesting in the early 80s as the home grown players that got promotion in 77 had left, from memory just had senior pros like Chopper,Micky Droy,Gary Locke, Ian Britton and Clive Walker, the next batch were mainly poor. David Stride, Micky Nutton, John Sitton, Kevin Hales, Tim Elmes.

I'm sure they tried their best so it was funny that there were only certain players singled out as unpopular with the crowd. With no money, apart from Johny B and Micky Fillery and Sometimes Peter Rhodes-Brown. We suffered for a period without home grown talent coming through

Lee Frost there's another Richard. But we really were utterly potless back then and couldn't afford to buy anyone. I remember about that time Hurst was the manager and in the programme it had a whole page spread that we put in a bid for Andy Ritchie. It was so rare that we bought players those days that actually putting in a bid for someone was in itself considered to be an achievement. Of course Ritchie turned us down and joined Brighton!.

Remember Robert Fleck we chase him for a couple of years and when we did sign him from Norwich he couldn't score he even miss a couple of open goals it didn't take long for fan to turn on him.

Lee Frost works in the removals game with a few of old skool CFC and he helped me move house earlier in the year. I have masses of CFC memorabilia (as we all do) and every other boxed was marked up “CFC this†and “CFC thatâ€, what was funny and I wouldn’t knock him for it but he never said a single word about CFC…

What was even funnier was, here I am over 50 and I was really excited about having an ex CFC player in my house !! L

What ever happened to that fat bloke? wot a game that semi was!!!!, remember beasant against Norwich getting loads of abuse, "one Kevin Hitchcock" rang out around bridge after his second mare of the afternoon. On a side note Beasants son plays for Stevanage and last week he was injured and couldn't play so the ressie keeper played, but guess who was drafted in on the bench at the ripe old age of 55? Beasant senior!!!
