In your opinion, why are we the most hated club in England?

Featured Replies

Well I do think the fact we disrupted the top two in England in a major way with the money we spent bugs people. I think w get more stick than City because we were the first. The thing is though English football needed a change and w changed it for the better, it was no longer just Man U and Arsenal winning the big one over here. Also we made this league stronger in Europe, I think people forget this.

Now the reason the hatred has sustained us simple because we've been good at it, we keep on winning things and that makes people jealous. It's funny cause a few mates of mine always who are Leeds Utd fans like to call us Chelski or Chel$ea, it's just born out of pure jealousy. Leeds hate everyone anyway but look at when the Roman era started, when Leeds United fell apart and were relegated. I love the hatred myself especially when it comes from Gooners, who always say we'd never be jealous of Chelsea. Yeh right that's why when you win the FA Cup you talk about us and the Premier League instead of enjoying it.

Really interested to see people's thoughts on this.

All seems to be centred around Abramovich's money, JT and Mourinho etc..

What do you think?

Yep all those.

But if those factors remained and we were sh*t, nobody would care less about us. It's a compliment to be disliked as it means you are successful.

The bitterness is embedded now from opposition fans, and whatever happens they will always find sticks to beat us with. Flags being a great example....oh you hate us because we wave flags and they are made of plastic? Get over it.

I don't think we're hated as much as the dirty scousers.

Considering they're everyone's second club, I couldn't find anyone that wanted them to win the league last year.

Agreed.  Literally no-one.  Even friends of mine who support lower league sides were "anyone but Liverpool".

Because we were the first club to get an outside investment that transformed our club overnight into title challengers.

I'd be jealous and envious if it had been Spurs or West Ham that Roman invested in rather than us.

When something upsets the normal equilibrium people tend to be rather judgmental and so anything "bad" that happens at our club is magnified due to the jealously of our overnight transformation into big hitters and big spenders.

Basically we got very lucky and while we appreciate it no end and continue to love our club, those on the outside with their noses pressed against the shop window looking on with envy just hate us because they ain't us.

The money, the arrogance (Jose in particular), some of our players' antics, the way we play (it's stifling and effective), some of our fans but all of this is made worse because we're successful.

Having said that I think there's also a grudging respect from most decent football supporters and the 'hate' is probably overblown and looks worse because of a vocal bunch of w**kers on social media.

In general, United fans respect Chelsea a lot more than Liverpool and Arsenal fans do.

And it's no coincidence those were the two teams we have passed going in the opposite direction, whilst being in accendence for the last 10+ years.

Because we "bought success and didn't earn it" apparently...despite more-or-less every club in England benefiting from outside investment at some point in their history.

Do people hate Fulham because of Al Fayed? No, but they should if they were consistent in their beliefs. Whelan at Wigan? Steve Gibson at Boro? Sir John Hall at Newcastle in the 90s? Members of the Moores family at both Merseyside clubs?

In 1991, Spurs were in severe financial trouble when they were purchased by Alan Sugar. That summer, they signed our best player in Durie for 2.1m. That is why I couldn't care less that we can outspend clubs like Spurs now. What goes around comes around.

We're also not a media favourite and the papers tend to jump on our players etc for stuff more so than say a Steven Gerrard who is favourite. The media can really create opinions.

I do think Jose has a lot to do with it aswell he's a very confident man who will say something controversial to simply take away the focus from the players. I do think when he wasn't here there was a little less hatred but that might have been because we weren't winning the big trophies as often. I remember though when we won the European Cup there were a fair few I know who wanted us to win. Don't think neutrals would feel the same for us under Jose.

As I say though I love the hatred.

Here you go guys...

Man United

In January 1902, with debts of £2,670, the club was served with a winding-up order. Captain Harry Stafford found four local businessmen, including John Henry Davies (who became club president), each willing to invest £500 in return for a direct interest in running the club and who subsequently changed the name.

Then later:

Following the death of principal benefactor John Henry Davies in October 1927, the club's finances deteriorated to the extent that Manchester United would likely have gone bankrupt had it not been for James W. Gibson, who, in December 1931, invested £2,000 and assumed control of the club.

Liverpool

Liverpool's recovery depended on new players being acquired and, in his autobiography, Shankly recalled the struggles he had with the board to make them realise the club's potential and the need to spend money on good players. He said there were times when he felt like walking out. He found a valuable ally in Eric Sawyer, of the Littlewoods pools organisation, who joined the board not long after Shankly's appointment and shared Shankly's vision of Liverpool as the best club in England.

Arsenal

The club's relative geographic isolation resulted in lower attendances than those of other clubs, which led to the club becoming mired in financial problems and effectively bankrupt by 1910, when they was taken over by businessmen Henry Norris and William Hall. Norris sought to move the club elsewhere, and in 1913, soon after relegation back to the Second Division, Arsenal moved to the new Arsenal Stadium in Highbury, North London; they dropped "Woolwich" from their name the following year. Arsenal only finished in fifth place in the second division during the last pre-war competitive season of 1914–15, but was nevertheless elected to rejoin the First Division when competitive football resumed in 1919–20, at the expense of local rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Some books have reported that this election to division 1 was achieved by dubious means.

But of course those three clubs earned every penny they ever spent through hard work, and tradition etc.

Our British culture likes to build only to knock down, not always being comfortable with success. The north south and class divide. Capital cities often attract strong dislike, when in France we found Parisians were not popular with other parts of the country. Jose is a 'foreigner' and worse than that he's a successful foreigner, even worse than that he is the antithesis of 'broken Britain' in that he is still a happily married family man. He has the continental style, is handsome and is admired by women. Interestingly not much to do with football.

The bitterness is embedded now from opposition fans

I think this is pretty true at the moment.

It's all since Abramovich, and winning the league though. I don't think we were hated when we had Zola.

Up north though, I'm not even sure we are the most hated. Yes, plenty of none football fans jump on the bandwagon, but it's all about bragging rights. So up here it's either hate Man Utd or Liverpool, still. Man City are just irrelevant.

What I do find amusing is the so-called hatred of Mourinho, from fans of these two clubs. My memory isn't brilliant, but before we re-signed him, facebook etc was full of them wanting him. Lets face it, if he bacame available, Man Utd, Liverpool and Arsenal fans would have him in a heartbeat.

Sheer jealousy.

Most cant stomach the success we have had since Roman came in and invested millions of pounds.

As FC points out we were the first in England to really do this (foreign billionaire owner who throws money at the club) and that still get's under our opponents skin.

I would start to worry when they don't talk about us, when they do it just proves we are still on top.

Agreed.

I'd tend to agree with that. You get a fair amount of decent United fans, especially their away mob. Arsenal less so and Liverpool, well...

I just think the ones who hate us are the most vocal, as most idiots are. The decent ones are the ones who admit they'd love to do what we do, or play how we play or even have Jose as boss. Like I said, social media seems to attract the morons and give them a platform.

Roman's money has helped us no end, that's obviously an understatement. What a lot of our 'haters' seem to forget is that we were already a well established team who regularly qualified for the Champions League & did reasonably well in it. We also came close to winning the EPL on more than one occasion. I don't see a comparison with City. They were nowhere before the money came in.

It's actually hilarious that the worst opposing fans moan at is out style of play. Arsenal fans are the worst for this, conveniently forgetting the George Graham days. That whole boring boring chant was brilliant we just lapped it up and made it part of our season. I remember listening to 606 live when a Gooner rang in to talk about how he felt sorry for us Chelsea fans and that we weren't happy with our style of play (yeah cause been Champions sucks doesn't it). Also the City fan who rang in saying he'd rather not win the league than win it the way Chelsea had (conveniently forgetting that until Decemeber we were the most exciting side in the league). Ian Wright tore both these guys a new one. Again it comes down to jealousy.

it's jealousy, they wish they were in our position

i dont even care to be honest i love the fact that everyone hates us it simply means we are doing everything right

The style issue is fascinating. I think it draws attention as some Brits are either lacking self awareness, or don't want to admit xenophobia, or classism for example. Our style can't be an issue as it has not stopped our access to trophies and it is football not a dance competition carrying points for entertainment value.

(I like to watch an entertaining game along with the next person, but when push comes to shove points makes prizes.)

::clap2::

You know what I most baffling when people say it's wrong to play a certain way. Like the game should only be played one way, defending is an art form itself and should be embraced as much as simply attacking. Tbh though the attacks on the style are simply there because there team has failed to beat us either in a match or to the prizes and it bugs them.
