Is it too early to be depressed that we won't sign a starter?

People are worried about Utds spending and it's understandable but just look at Real Madrid and the amount they have spent in the last 7 years and how many League titles have they won? One! Money does not guarantee success

Does anyone actually believe that Utds first 11 is better than ours? Even with the amount of cash they have spent in the last few years our first 11 is still easily better

They still have major holes in their team. Average CBs and a past his best Rooney as their main forward who has failed to score 20 or more goals in each of the last 3 seasons

Not forgetting we have the best manager in world football

I think the problem is that we have some holes (that might not be as glaring as other teams), but we have the opportunity to fill those holes and it doesn't even appear that we are interested.

Nobody knows what we have in Cuadrado, and Moses is definitely not up to starting on the right side, so after taking those things into account, it should be obvious that we need a quality RW.

However, the only player we have been openly pursuing as a CB which at this point we don't really need.

Judging from last night's game at least Moses showed he deserves another chance. But Loftus Cheek and Traore looked short of being ready for the first team.

You know what you're going to get with Oscar, Mikel and Ramires. Not expecting much to change.

We're going to be heavily reliant on Hazard again and hoping that Costa loses his rustiness fast.

Disappointing we haven't strengthened in any significant way this transfer window.

Their biggest problem is LVG.

What happens if Matic gets injured? Or is suspended? Is Jose planning to play him every game next season?

We have mikel, rlc, and Zouma. I would be more comfortable with witsel in the squad but I don't think there will be much movement in that department.

Have to say that Mourinho's comments on RLC this week didn't offer much optimism regarding his playing time.

I think Witsel would be an upgrade on Mikel and Zouma in that position but I can see why bringing him in would impact on RLC's long-term chances.

For me Id like a bigger squad with more depth but I think its Mourinho's method of having only a small squad but players able to fill multiple positions within it. 3 full backs where Azpi can play both Sides, 3 CDefs with Ivan able to fill a place.  IMO its a dangerous situation to have to rely on no major injuries but its seems that it Jose's way, he did similar at Madrid and Inter.

Also I think we are really not going to be able to fill the squad with players as we are struggling with top class Home Grown Players, although not a problem in the future, I think RLC is being put in the squad because he meets a minimum ability requirement (able to do a job but not relied upon) whilst also being home grown, I think we'd probably see or Pasalic with RLC going on loan if it wasn't the case.

The moves we have made though are positive, Falcao is on the same level as Dogba even if he does "fail" like last season at Utd. Begovic is a decent signing and I don't think anyone believed we'd keep Petr happy on the bench for a second season. Stones would be a decent move and Id like to see a quality CDM bought but I cant see up doing it unless Mikel asks for a move.

We haven't addressed issues we needed to IMO. Right side wing is a questionmark; Moses, Cuadrado to backup Willian..? We sold Luis and we keed the backup; might be Rahman who knows. Center of the field we have one functional pair Cesc-Matic, which is too little. Strikeforce is okay as long as Costa stays fit, Remy stays in form and Falcao finds his old form.

I am a bit concerned but there is still time.

It's the lack of quality cover for the central midfield pairing that worries me most. Think we will get buy everywhere else, and I do think someone else will come in before the end of the window.

We got lucky with injuries last season, particulary in the centre of the park - we can't rely on that happening again.

So why are we not trying to sign anyone? Is José really being held back due to finances to fund the stadium, or do we have the money but roman has told José to integrate players we've had on loan, and the youth.

How do you/we know we're not ??
Could just be that the papers haven't got hold of it yet ?, or we're waiting on an 'out' before we make our move ??

The speculation and negativity (not just you enigma) on here after only a week into the window is amazing me !

A week? The window is open for almost a month now and still we haven't signed anybody that actually strengthens us. If you look at previous windows, we have done our transfer business very soon and started integrating the new players. It's an indication that we are not going to be doing any business anymore. Mourinho also said we shouldn't expect any big names coming in.

I don't know if it's his call but i think it's not. Mourinho is smart enough to know that our squad has holes in it and that we can use 1 or 2 starters.

But it was easier to upgrade the team before.

Coming into Chelsea in the previous two seasons we finished 6th and then scraped 3rd. The squad balance was awful when he arrived after years of chopping and changing of management.

Jose came in and made sweeping changing all across the squad, within 2 years we've gone from having a front three of Torres, Ba and Eto'o to having Costa, Remy and Falcao.

So now we're league Champions we don't need to be signing Costa's and Fabregas' because we've already got them. The areas to tweak and change are much smaller and so the one out, one in policy fully kicks in.

I know right wing is an area a lot of us have said needs addressing but at the end of the day we've currently got Willian, Cuadrado, Moses, Traore, Remy and Ramires who can play there. Realistically what do we expect to give to allow us to sign another player?

Squad depth has been addressed with RLC, Moses and Traore all looking like they might be added to the squad next season and if Stones comes in too then that only further adds to the number of options.

I'm not really sure what people are expecting... People want a Bale, Pogba, Rues type signing but that's never been Jose's style when it comes to player recruitment at Chelsea.

He doesn't a Cavani, he signs a Drogba. He doesn't sign a Schweinsteiger he signs and Essien.

Keep the faith people.

That just basically means we are overloading the right wing position with useless players. Willian, Cuadrado, Moses, Remy and Ramires are not players that i see as good enough to play on our right wing. If we want to compete with the big guns like Real Madrid, Barcelona or Bayern, we need the big name players. We need someone to relieve the pressure of Hazard because it's pretty obvious that he is the focal point in our attacking system.

Last season we did win the league, but the quality of the league was shaky at best. If you look at what our competitors have done in this window, especially Man U, you just know that next season will be a whole different story.

What I have seen in this thread is that our first 11 is very strong but we lack depth which I agree with, but I don't see how that causes disgruntlement at not signing a starter/big name, and you can't sign big names as squad fillers fro morale and financial reasons.

What first 11 member do you think we could upgrade in the current market? the only name and can see people using is Pedro who if he is better he isn't that much better than Willian admittedly he does bring a different dynamic which could be useful but we are already massively over laden with right wingers and some would have to go if we were to sign him.

We currently have 5 right wingers and then 3 others that can play on the RW
(Willian, Cuardrado, Salah, Moses and Traore who play there and Remy and Oscar and Ramires that can play there)
Yes Salah is leaving but that still makes 4 can we really offord to have another RW on the books.

CM is a position people are talking about lacking depth.
This problem in my eyes comes from Ramires and Mikel being off the boil last year and was an area I was worried about coming into the transfer window and hoping we would strengthen.
but we do have a decent number of players that can play in the centre and every midfielder we buy stops players like RLC and Baker from being able to have a squad spot for atleast the next 3-4 years (as that seems to be the minimum contract people sign these days) and I would like to see these players given a shot.

So for 2 positions we have  ((Matic, Fabregas, Mikel, Ramires and RLC with a couple that can fill in Zouma and Oscar (who I would like to see there more often)))
so again I believe that either Mikel or Ramires (who are definitely premier league quality one bad season doesn't change that and definitely good enough to sit on the bench) need to leave to in order to accommodate a signing.

Yes we need to bring in a couple of defenders as we currently only have 6 (including Ake whos likely to go on loan) with Luis going. Baba Rahman looks like our targeted replacement for Luis and seems to fit the bill and is young so will develop. And then Stones as further cover for the back and again is young and will develop

How I see it is that for every squad filler it makes the development of our youth players considerably harder, so unless there is a star out there that wants to come I am more than happy with keeping the status quo, and a extra year of gelling as a team and developing as individuals will only make us stronger as we have a relatively young squad.

The starting 11 we have is still superior to all of those in our league despite the multi millions Man U and Liverpool have spent and we should have another good season.

That just basically means we are overloading the right wing position with useless players. Willian, Cuadrado, Moses, Remy and Ramires are not players that i see as good enough to play on our right wing.

'Useless players'..

f**king pathetic, do you EVER remember us not winning everything ? you sound like the ultimate glory hunter, i struggle to contain my anger with posts like this.

We arent that club anymore though, the bar has been raised and do has expectations. We arent a mid table side without cash hoping to qualify for the CL. We are the English Champions and we are signing cast offs and backups. Instead of looking to strengthen we are remaining status quo, pretty much everything we have mocked Arsenal for the last 10 years. I would be perfectly fine with this of it ment we were trying to integrate some youngsters, but I remain sceptical

While I dont necesarily agree with his point, this is such a silly argument. We won the double and the Champions league with Bosingwa at right back and he was terrible.

To call 4 players that were part of a double winning season "useless" makes you a bit of a knob in my book.

No argument there. Not sure whats going on, but theres been a lot of hostility lately, it seems like some posters cant make a point without being over the top, swearing or attacking others.

I wonder if it would be possible to get Reus this summer?  I don't see a big reason for him to stay at Dortmund when Klopp is gone and they won't play CL next season.

The difference is arsenal are keeping the status quo when they are perennially 4th, we are keeping the status quo of a double winning side, don't see that as a problem. If there was someone in our first team that doesn't deserve his spot then you would have to upgrade them but they are all top quality and all deserving champions, why does that need changing?
