John Stones

Featured Replies

Some more gems from that Everton forum - who knew they were as bitter and deluded as their scouse counterparts?!

"He's on a long term contract; the ball is in our court. £60m"

"If this is true he's not the person I thought he was, in fact he's really really f'ing stupid.

It really is absolutely terrible the way Chelsea have been allowed to go about this. A real death for football this is."

"Destabilise a promising young professional to the point where his position at the club who nurtured him becomes completely untenable, and turn the fans that have supported his growth against him, all so that he can become the new centre point of the most anti-football team in the country. Congrats Chelsea. Stones, you are a bad tramp also. If the board sell now I'm done with football."

That last one is the icing on the cake. Everton fans had absolutely no issue with their club buying Stones from Barnsley. Using the word 'nurtured' - give me a f*cking break man hahaha.

In the sheer droves of ridiculousness a bit of intelligence/logic shines through:

"Martinez knew before today, that's why last Friday the best response we got was 'I'm not aware of that request'

We're a laughing stock. And from stones POV why would he stay when he looks at our business and show of ambition"

Buzzing now - lets wrap this up quickly

A lot of referrals to him being a judas on that board, I'm sorry but didn't you sign him from Barnsley? Lol, f**king embarrassing.

as if, really?

"You non scouse judas, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire where we signed you from, how dare you leave the club of your roots in the sh*t"

Said it in previous posts, Martinez did not deny the TR because chances are he knew one was imminent or being handed in.... he gave the game away so obviously

Agreed Pedro. The only caveat in my statement is if Chelsea or another club bid an absurd amount, beyond what has already been discussed in the media.

In these situations local journalists are infinitely closer to the story than national journalists, and every single indication locally is that the player will not request a transfer or kick up as fuss.

With respect the story in the Express is clickbait, and it's written by John Richardson (I think). If you've ever read any of his stuff before or seen him on the Sunday Supplement, he's a hack and nothing more.

The other reason I'm so certain is that Martinez said it wouldn't even matter if the player did submit a transfer request now, it's too late in the window for us to replace him properly, and it would affect our season too much.

You're not going to get Stones, so don't worry about it. New contract in the offing.

well maybe unlike your guys he doesnt talk to the press!!!  hes  contracted to a club for that

! ....and remember  the kid  has class!

I'll put it this way then, without trying to sound too pompous.

It makes no sense for Everton to sell this summer, not just to Chelsea, but to anybody.

That's why we are demanding so much money. We don't need to sell, he hasn't said he wants to go, and he is key to our plans.

Well it's not a fact; it's just highly probable. If we got fourth (our point total just two years ago was good enough for fourth almost every other year) it could buy us another year or two.

Martinez's plan is to try to keep this core together. It's highly ambitious and probably incredibly unlikely to succeed but that's his plan.

Yes it's unlikely but what do you want us to do? Give up? Pack it in? The sell to buy model is garbage -- a fact Southampton may have started to realize when our third goal went in last weekend. Our only hope, even if it's a huge longshot, is to retain players like Stones and Barkley. 40m of Europa level talent sitting on our bench is not going to help us get fourth.

I've said it before and I will say it again: we can't sign elite players so your money is useless. Doesn't matter how much you give us for Stones ... 100 MILLION! ... we can't spend that money on players better than Stones (or most of our current first 11 TBH). A bottom half team can get better selling a top 4 side their players and buying new ones. Spurs, Liverpool, us ... we can't get IN better than we send OUT. So the money is a trap. Martinez knows that. He isn't holding out for more money. He wants to keep Stones.

Make no mistake ... even at 50m ... most of us will utterly lose our minds if he's sold this window. I just want to stress that because it's a fact you lot (and the City fan above) seem unable to grasp. Not 30m. Not 40m. Not 50m. We don't want the money.

Unless he puts in a transfer request -- which I think is unlikely this year -- he's not moving.

Evening lads......

Well I'm fairly gutted about that, but I'll have to hold my hands up and say I was wrong about the player and the possibility of a transfer request, contrary to my many statements on the subject.

Not much more to say. I don't know whether I'd sell or not. My head's gone really.

Jon Woods and Bill are out of the sh*t anyway, they can just pass the blame to the other board members.  Green and Earl is it?

"But he's a good lad! A proper lad! He wouldn't do this to us!!!"

Jesus they were starting to come off like over protective mothers for God's sake. I don't know if this is 100% true or not. I don't even know if we will get him but the way this has played out has seriously been an embarrassment.

EDIT:

I just read Bluedylan's post so am feeling a tad bit bad for kinda having a go. I know it isn't easy to see a player you really like potentially leave so I am sorry that you feel so gutted.

Excuse for my limited understanding of contracts but if he puts in a formal request what can they do to stop him? Isn't the fee we offer compensation for his services?

Obviously Everton have every right to try and hold onto Stones though that leads to the ethical consideration of where does the players desires fit into the equation.....but this notion that 40million wouldn't improve the EFC squad is either utter bollocks or a huge condemnation of their recruiting department. I mean, you can't say 40 million won't improve the squad when the player being sold for 40 million, you know the CL quality CB, was only bought a few seasons prior for a mere 3 million....

I'm still not sure this means anything, fingers crossed we're the only ones in for him. I do wonder why he left it so late though.

thry can reject it. And still refuse to sell.  Him handing one in means any loyalty bonus he was owed, which can sometimes be a few mill, he now won't get if he leaves.

He is basically forfeiting all owed monies (besides wages) to leave.  However that loyalty bonus he has forfeited, we can pay back to him in a signing on fee.  So in essence he doesn't miss out in a big way

I'm curious as to why I can't see or find anything about a release clause.

Still don't think Everton will sell to us, probably out of pride more than anything. He's still playing well for them so it's not affecting him too much.

I tend to agree with this, but I do find it funny, seeing them all turn on him now.

The thing is if John has his heart set on us because we're the ones who have made the effort and as others have said, if he's put it in, you'd think it would be with the goal of playing for us, so Everton may not have a choice.

Players hold all the power these days, rightly or wrongly.

Nah we can still keep him, that's not an issue. It's whether we want to keep him not, the finances, the possibility of the crowd getting on his back, next summer's Euros, who we could get in etc etc. Quite a few things to consider for us.

I have to say, to hand it in with 6 days to go is spectacularly poor behaviour on the player's part. Do it in July, if you're going to do it, and at least have some consideration for your current club. Devastated.

IS it not just if they accept it you forfeit the loyalty bonus? Could be wrong though

It might not be a new and unexpected thing for Everton, theres every chance he asked unofficially to be allowed to move when we first bid, nothing has come of that so he now feels he has to put an official request in.

I'd be surprised if he only handed it in today though mate, I think the board knew about this before today.
