Papy Djilobodji

A completely pointless signing. Not that I thought he was anything but backup material anyway, but playing him for one minute hardly represents value for money.

That's only because we had no longer injuries at CB.

Played full match against Schalke, how was he?

Apparently he had a great game for Werder Bremen. Didn't watch the game, but people at his new club seem to be very happy that they got him.

Right.let's get him back!!

3 tackles (out of 4 attempted), 5 interceptions, 10 clearances, 1 dribble, 1 block, 3 headers won (out of 3)...

Just saying...

I'll wait a few more games before I say "I told you so... should have given him try at Chelsea."

But at a time when quality depth was a priority for the team why did we concern ourselves with a player who was never going to be considered for first team selection?

It's such an odd mindset towards player recruitment.

I think you are rewriting history in saying that depth was a priority. It wasn't.

We had Terry, Cahill, Zouma and Ivanovic for CB, there was no urgent need for depth much less it being a matter of priority.

You and others are being clouded and associating the Papy deal with us chasing John Stones when they have absolutely nothing to do with each other. We weren't in desperate need to add a CB to the squad and having failed to get Stones turned to Papy. We were chasing Stones because we had identified him as a rare potential world class English talent and were trying to grab him before someone else did.

The Papy deal, as I said, was simply a cheap transfer looking to profit down the line meaning that to this point it cannot yet be judged.

When was the last time Ivanovic played at centre back for Chelsea?

He's our first choice right back and one of only three full backs within the squad.

Signing a defender, either as a cover for right back or for centre back was very much a priority this summer.

Of course the failure to sign Stones and signing Papy are linked.

Would Papy have been bought if we'd secured the signing of Stones, let alone made a part of the first team squad?

Questioning when the last time Ivanovic played CB for us kind of proves my point that adding depth was far from a necessity or priority.

Yes, I do think that Papy would still have been signed had we gotten Stones. He may however have gone straight out on loan in that case, as Hector did.

Didn't play well yesterday in the 3:3 against Berlin, but he is at least getting game time in the Bundesliga unlike someone like Kalas.

I didn't watch the game, but Whoscored gives him as the best player on the Werder Bremen team save for Pizarro who scored two goals.

1 shot on goal, 1 key pass, 8 aerials won out of 9, 96 touches (most in the team), 2 successful dribbles (out of 2 attempted), fouled once, 1 tackle, 3 interceptions, 1 block, 4 clearances and a decent passing rate (80,3%).

Watched the highlights and he wasn't at fault with either goal. You could argue that he may have been able to to more with the last goal, but it was the other defender that failed to track the run and block the final touch.

I've just registered here to clear up some misconceptions. Papy came to us as a replacement for Assani Lukimya, a defender who was really likeable but in terms of football... not very good. He was one of the guys who win every tackle with their 100kg body but then proceed to stomp it right into the sky. So naturally, the expectations Werder fans had were not very high.

It was a very pleasant surprise that Papy surpassed the expectations by a mile. In the two matches he played so far he was absolutely insane. He was really good at defending and really good at building up the play. I think, if he can keep this form he's the best player in our squad and while I admit we're a pretty sh*tty team, we have some quality players like Ujah, Vestergaard or Pizarro.

I don't follow Chelsea that much, but as I can recall, your season hasn't been the best. No idea why Papy didn't play more than 10 seconds. If he plays on like in the first matches, you will at least be able to sell him for about 10M£.

TLDR: If someone says Werder conceded 3, so papy sucked, he didn't watch the game. Papy is the best defender we had since Mertesacker.

Hmmmm. Forgive me for not getting too excited about this.

Thanks for the info though!

So is that 11 goals conceded in three games since Didgeridoo joined?

9.

He had two great games for Werder. Today's game he was poor, but so was the entire team and its not like any defender looked better than him. Overall seemed like he got a bit cocky and instead of sticking with the basics he overemphasized.
