Goodbye to our worst season (of the Abramovich era)

Featured Replies

Compare this season to those bad ones in the 70's and 80's and you could argue that this worse.

Yes we are top flight, top half of the table (just), but then look at the resources available, the supposed world class talent, a wealthy generous owner, massive under achievement this year.

Those teams in the 70's and 80's were exactly who they were meant to be.

I think our world class talent is exaggerated. We have a lack of technical ability and footballing IQ in this team, and that is a big problem. Our attack (bar hazard) are clueless a lot of the time, and we have players in midfield who aren't much smarter with the ball. Ivanovic is always a mistake waiting to happen, and cahill's form is up n down like a damn yoyo, and on top of that our best defender is aging, and zouma is long term injured. Team is a mess right now and we need some good, intelligent players in the side.

I have followed Chelsea since 1995 maybe 1994 (can't remember) and expected us to have a great season with Jose. It was super negative from off season, to preseason and into the season with all the wrong headlines.

We have one of the strongest squads in Europe. I'd say top 10. When on song this squad can be brilliant. Not this exact squad probably but with some tweaks.

I have a positive feeling of next season. Conte is a tough guy and we need a kick in the arse so to say.

For the first time in a long time I really look forward to the off season, a 10th finish behind the all mighty Stoke is just unacceptable. I hope we start making deals soon, better get most big name signings sorted before Euro 2016.

What a strange season ... only five clubs secured more points than they did in 2014/15 ... Leicester (+40), West Ham (+15), Tottenham (+6), Southampton (+3), and Sunderland (+1).

Every other club apart from Everton (47 points in each season) went backwards !

A lot of topsy turvy seasons as well. Watford got 29 of their 41 points in the first 18 games. Palace got 31 of their 42 points in the first 19 games. Southampton got 39 of their 63 points in the final 18 games.

This season is by far the worst one that I can remember in all my years of supporting Chelsea, although no doubt it seems heavenly next to the 1970's and 80's. Luckily I cannot remember those times so I now have this season as the ultimate reference point for Chelsea mediocrity.

One of the few saving graces is Leicester's miracle title win, probably one of the few things that could possibly obscure Chelsea's fall from grace. Claudio, once again we thank you.

It's almost trite to discuss the things that went wrong this season. Chelsea was almost like a living embodiment of Murphy's Law - everything that could go wrong, DID go wrong. From the disjointed pre-season, to dressing room friction, to Jose turning into a parody of himself, to key players rapidly losing form or getting injured, to relegation-standard play, to what is the worst title defence in living memory, to some highly questionable and perhaps politicised selections and tactics...it's actually a challenge to think about what went RIGHT.

Well, here's my list:

- Willian, perhaps the only player who played anywhere near as well as he did last season (albeit he was solid last season, but not great)

- Kurt Zouma's continued development

- Claudio Ranieri finally winning a top-flight title

- (Maybe) Antonio Conte's end-of-season appointment, given that he doesn't suffer fools lightly

Anyway, on we go to next season. It surely couldn't be any worse - could it?

Er, no. Not really. Not at all actually.

You could argue it. But it would be an argument that wouldnt bear much scrutiny.

i was just making fun of the fact that you started following us when we was sh*t...that`s all

Part irony? Part I say as many, no one here, don't grasp true irony.
