well I thought it was weird for Woy to have his resignation speech prepared right after the match. I wondered if he had it in his pocket believing there was a chance England might lose. Seriously, most CFC fans know that Danny Boy Sturridge is left-footed. So why did he remain on the right flank all match? Not once I could recall he was out on the left & Sterling on the right. Right there something was up.

I found that very rude of him, all that money he's pocketed from the fans, and he thinks he can just swan off without being questioned. Shame because I thought he had a bit more class than that.

It's unfortunate that this will be Hodgson's legacy rather than the fact that he took Fulham from relegation fodder to Europa League runner-up, losing only to Atlético Madrid in the final in extra time. That he took West Brom from the relegation zone to 11th with just 13 games left in the season. That he won manager of the year by a record margin.

I get the feeling the FA set him up to fail with its bureaucracy, corruption, ineptness, and demand for absolute manager obsequiousness.

I even wonder how much autonomy he really had in terms of player selection considering that Greg Dyke, who was previously on the Manchester United board, is in charge of the FA.

The problems are much deeper than Hodgson. Until the rot is stopped, whoever takes this job is doomed.

Hodgson is tactically inept we all knew that.. That doesn't excuse the players from not being able to do simple things like pass the ball and defend throw ins absolutely disgraceful, Whoever is next in charge needs to build a team like Conte has done with Italy, Forget individuals build a team for future tournaments.

 

Going back to Conte love his passion and tactically you can see he is excellent cannot wait for the start of the season now.

I have always said that England play like they have a boulder and chain strapped to their legs. It always look's like they are carrying something extra when they play tournament football.

Just seen a stat that England have won just 6 games of knockout football since they won the World Cup.

Makes you wonder how or why we always get talked up before every tournament.

I couldn't believe that at first so i had to check........but it's true. That is just embarrassing, 

World cup knockout games for England since 66.

 

70 - Only one KO game for England in the QF, which we drew with Germany and lost after extra time.

74 - Two group stages, the only knockout game was the final (and third place play off)

78 - DNQ

82 - Again Two group stages, this time only 3 knockout games, two semi's and the final.

86 - Rd 16 England beat Paraguay 3-0, QF lost to the hand of God.

90 - Rd 16 England beat Belguim 1-0, then drew to Cameroon in QF and won after ET, semi final drew with Germany lost on pens.

94 - DNQ

98 - Rd 16 England drew with Argentina, lost on pens.

02 - Rd 16 England 3 Denmark 0, QF lost to Brazil 2-1

06 - Rd 16 England beat Ecuador 1-0, QF drew with Portugal lost on pens.

I'm not here to gloat in any way (Scotland didn't even qualify, ffs), just to share my observations.

 

I know that a number of people have compared this team to the Chelsea team of the 15-16 campaign, and I suppose there is a lot of truth in that; in so much as, a number of players under-performed.  However, I think taht the selection of players from the outset was shocking.  One recognized winger.  Wilshire being picked when he'd been out for ages.  Rooney being used in whatever role he was in (did someone say shoe-horned?), it was all a massive set up for failure.  And a lot of that has to ride on Roy's shoulders

 

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Roy have a history of picking players on merit?  It's as if he doesn't want to upset the fans of the "bigger teams" by leaving their players at home.  He certainly seems to have done that with Wiltshire, and Rooney, and constantly starting Kane...etc.

 

I also think that there was a level of arrogance among the English players.  It's to be expected considering how much media coverage they (and their "WAGS" get).  However, it is the same media that will tear them to shreds if they fail to live up to the hype (hen calling them over-paid nonces????).  Seriously, how many times are we going to hear about "the spirit of 66," when no team has even looked like sniffing that level of greatness in recent memory (maybe 86 and 90)?

 

Now the inevitable "senior players lost confidence in Roy" stories to come out.  It's as if the players are completely devoid of criticism.  It's why I am excited that someone like Conte is coming in to Chelsea... no excuses.

 

I think with the over inflated price of British born players, this is merely going to exacerbate the issue too.  They'll look at their price tag, and use it as a benchmark for other players too.  Seriously, Lallana could look at himself and think "I'm only a few Million cheaper than Eden Hazard...I must be great."  And that's not necessarily a dig at Adam, just an example of how ridiculous prices are....i suppose the ultimate would be Sterling!!!

He's been out of football management for a whole decade!

For me it epitomizes everything wrong with our mindset towards the national team when the moronic dinosaur that is Glenn Twaddle gets mentioned in any way about the England coaching set up.

That man is coming back in another life as a dung beetle.

A prepared speech for us going out is enough is it ? nah, i'm not having that. Hodgson owes us fans more than that. With the amount us fans go through, with the amount of money the fans spend to follow England, we deserve much more than some sh*t prepared resignation speech, a speech that he probably already had planned out when things went wrong again.

 

And that Martin Glenn dick at the F.A can get stuffed too. " I'm not a football expert "......then what the hell are you doing being involved in the F.A then ? piss off, let someone who knows what they are doing help pick our next manager.

Back in 2004, I had an insider perspective for the selection process for an Olympic team event, and there was so much politics and other factors involved. The great players were selected obviously. After that, when you had many good but not great players competing for a limited number of slots, merit took a back seat. The coach was pressured by the national sports body to select certain players. Officially the coach had autonomy, but the pressure from the sports body was immense.

Some national sports bodies really do give the coach complete autonomy. It was that way under the previous regime at this sports body until new people came in.

I don't think for one second that Hodgson had, in practice, complete autonomy. Greg Dyke was previously a Manchester United board member. You don't think there was pressure to play Rooney and select Rashford out of the many players who would be equally qualified for that spot? You don't think there was pressure to play the new media darling Harry Kane? It's telling that Kane was the only player assigned to all official media sessions and photo shoots during the tournament. Not Rooney the captain nor Cahill the vice captain, but Kane.

Mind you, this can happen at the club level too.

It was far worse than a joke, it was a bloody disgrace and tells us all we need to know about the FA and the way football is run in this country.

 

Hodgson, having trousered in the region of £14 million whilst being an abject failure in 3 tournaments thinks it's beneath him to explain himself to the fans. Martin Glenn who is Chief Executive of the FA openly states he is not a football expert, but at the same time announces that he is one of the gang of 3 who will be choosing the next England manager. It's beyond parody.

With Bilic, I doubt he's interested. Alex Ferguson said that he could never manage England because it would be too emotionally difficult for him because he is Scottish. I think that would be the case with Bilic too, not wanting to manage England in a game against Croatia.

Interestingly, Ferguson called the England manager job the worst job in football.
