Very sad news! Absolute tragedy!

A very classy gesture by Atletico Nacional who requested that Chapecoense be crowned the winners of the Copa Sudamericana.

To elaborate more, this wasn't merely a symbolic gesture by Atletico Nacional, it was an act of altruism.

The Copa Sudamericana is the South American equivalent of the Europa League, and the Copa Libertadores is the equivalent of the Champions League. The winner of the Copa Sudamericana gains entry into the group stage of next season's Copa Libertadores.

In being declared winners of the Copa Sudamericana, Chapocoense get the prize money for the Copa Sudamericana in addition to the money that will come next season from playing in the Copa Libertadores. Additionally, just as the prospect of Champions League football makes a club attractive to players, so does the prospect of Copa Libertadores football. This in theory should help Chapocoense attract players.

The money in the Copa Libertadores is a pittance compared to Champions League money - about 10% or so - but it will provide a financial base for the club to rebuild. Chapocoense was also awarded the fair play award which involves some prize money. Insurance claims and perhaps a lawsuit against the airline should bring some money too.

The bigger challenge is not financing the rebuilding, though that is a major challenge of course, but rather carrying it out. Every "important" person at the club was on the plane - players, manager, backroom staff, board members, everyone. I can't think of where they would start to rebuild. They don't have anyone to lead the rebuilding, to manage the incoming money, and to negotiate contracts with new players and staff. Along with the top administrators went their internal knowledge about the club and possibly key documents stored on their personal computers. In addition, as we all know can happen in football, when they wade through everything they might find that there was some dodgy business that was previously concealed.

I wonder if it might be better to take a break from the league next season, playing only in cup competitions and friendlies, instead of trying to hastily patch together a team. It will be a real challenge to play a full season with an especially packed schedule due to the Copa Libertadores games. The downside, of course, is that they'll miss out on the game day money. Perhaps major international clubs, including Chelsea, can arrange some pre-season friendlies to get them some ticket revenue without the stress of playing a full season.

Football Leaks has revealed Toby Alderweiereld has a buyout clause of just over 25 million. Lets trigger that one in january and tempt him with a good salary. He would be absolutely perfect for our back three.

It seems Pep caught a rare managerial disease called Wengeritis. He should see a doctor about it or in a few years he'll madly celebrate the 4th place trophy.

Did you read about Balotelli's contract with Liverpool ?

Apparently he would gain £1,000,000 if he avoided 3 red cards in a Premier League season. He also would gain £50,000 for every goal he scored after reaching 5 goals.

Why would any club agree to any of this, especially for someone as bad as Balotelli ?

Didn't see that, sounds absolutely insane though.

Alexis Sanchez still stalling on signing a new contract with Arsenal btw. Arsene Wenger not basically admitting its a big money issue as they don't want to offer him more then 150.000 a week.
We can go over that and should make him an offer if the opportunity arises, a front three of him, Hazard and Costa would be absolutely terrifying for anyone facing us.

Not to mention the raw frothing at the mouth hatred it would inspire in the Arsenal fans if we pinched him.

That would be something to behold. We can all dream I suppose.

Safe money

Hull and Swansea definitely. I can't see Sunderland keeping up their recent form so I'd say they'll go down too. While it would be hilarious to see WH get relegated, I think they'll do just enough to stay afloat

Anyone here listen to 5 live? A Leicester fan rang in saying that they should sack Ranieri and get Iain Dowie in :laugh2:
Robbie Savage was hilarious saying "IAIN DOWIE? YOU'D IAIN DOWIE?!" :laugh2:

Savage would have a field day reading some of the match day threads here!

This is like a bribe you give little kids.

Parents: Tommy, if you get in trouble at school fewer than 3 times this year, we'll buy you that Mario Balotelli jersey you asked for.

Tommy: I promise to be a good boy because I really want that Mario Balotelli jersey. He's my hero, and I want to be just like him!

See the team Pep has put out against Celtic? No way Monch are passing them even if they beat Barca and City lose but c'mon. I gotta hand it to him for having the balls but talk about a weakened team, I guess they don't have as much depth as I remembered. Even Barca who also have nothing to play for have put out a nearly full strength side.

Meanwhile Wenger looks desperate to avoid finishing 2nd.

I'm watching City v Celtic and Chris Sutton is coming across like a right miserable bar steward. He's moaning about everything. He's moaning about the defending, the finishing, the refs. Every time he opens his mouth, he is moaning.

Sounds like he's coming across as something else
