wouldn't seem like a bad idea, they know each other, he adds some depth, and we won't lose anything if he performs bad, seems like an alright go imo

if this is true, speaks confidence about luiz being a conte signing

rarely seen him play, but according to this comment from wagnh, why not, not much of a risk

Juventino here, offering my 2 cents.

Caceres is quality CB. And he has enough quality for 1st team football in several teams and a good depth option for top teams, playing backup to Barzagli, Bonucci and Chiello is nothing shameful.

The problem is that he is made of glass. He is extremely (emphasis on EXTREMELY) injury-prone. Like, a lot. It’s a question of whether his quality and versatility outweigh the risk of having a CB that frequently misses games due to a somewhat violent breeze.

Not sure I see how the two are connected personally?

If anything it makes me wonder how confident Conte and the club are of Zouma returning to match fitness before the New Year.

Caceres was at one time potentially a world class defender but injuries have put paid to that, sadly. He'd be great if he got in the pitch, but it makes zero sense to have an injury prone backup for a young kid coming off a serious injury and a 35-yo Terry.

In saying that...on a free, there's little risk. He's primarily a CB but I think he played both fullback positions when necessary at Juve or Sevilla, he's pretty quick and strong and good on the ball which would make him suit the EPL. And perhaps he is just one of those players whose body just isn't cut out for a 38-game season, but he could be useful off the bench.

Or maybe he's a defensive Falcao/Pato.

If we can get him on a one-year deal on cheap wages then I can't see why not, especially if he already has a good relationship with Conte.

He is made of sawdust though so I can't see him getting many minutes. It's funny, a week ago we were screaming out for one more defender. At this rate we could end up with three.

There is no defender in the world that I want to replace Zouma. We finally got a young super talented defender who can turn into a world-class CB. We don't need any CB's when we have JT, Cahill, David Luiz, Zouma and Ivanovic.

I am a Juve fan, therefore I know him quite well.

Martin is really strong both technically and tactically. He was by far Juventus best in 1 on 1 fundamentals, so fast and reactive that no one could dribble him in Series A. If he gets back in shape, he may be a key asset for Chelsea but he is a problematic individual as well. Juventus decided to let him go because of his love for the nightlife, the alcohol(he destroyed two Ferraris over the years and got his driving licence retired) and he's also injury prone. During his spell at Juventus I've never seen him play more than 4 matches consecutively and that is why I believe he may be a good deal but I would never offer him more than a 2 year agreement. If Conte manages to revive him, that would be his masterpiece.

Nice input from the Juve fans, I'd say avoid if that's the case. At this stage of his career, he should figure out the priority of work and play. That's probably why no one has picked him up yet..

Zouma on the way back maybe the best signing this season. If he backs to where was before ( 80-90%), with Cahill/Luiz/Christensen, we will be fine for the next 3-4 years

What are we going to do, have eight defenders in the starting XI? Another forward or two would be nice.

I don't think we will see Zouma in the first team this side of the year.  Hopefully get a run out in the reserves though.

why not? i have seen him running and slide tackling in training.

Zouma looks close to returning so i dont see why we would need him.

returning to the pitch? maybe. returning to his best? i doubt it. probably need another 2 months (after returning to the pitch) before he'll back to his best

Apparently wants £2.1mil a year (that's £175k a week before tax!)

that doesn't make sense, 2.1mil a year is only around 40-45k a week

Well from what the Juve fans have said of him, seems like a sensible short-term option given the potential for both Terry and Zouma to miss a lot of games this season, which would leave us with no CB cover behind Cahill/Luiz, the latter of which will probably be needed in midfield if Kante or Matic pick up an injury.

Thanks for giving us such a great warts and all explanation of Caceres. I noticed when I looked at his appearances for Juve I don't think he has played more than 20 league games a season while he was there. I was wondering what the story behind that was.

You can run a marathon with a torn ACL, you just can't change direction.  He's had a traditional operation (as opposed to the German developed LARS method) so its 9 months at best and 12 months the more likely expectation.  Considering he's got world class health support and his rehabilitation is his full time job, he would still be a month away.  However as he's young with a long career ahead of him, there will be absolutely no rush to get him back into the first team, so a couple of months would be my bet.

That's just my thoughts purely as an observer though.

What calculations are you using?

2.1m/52 = 40k

That's 175k per month, not per week, unless I've missed some big change to the gregorian calendar while I was off on a 4 day bender (entirely possible)

He should have probably played more at the beginning of his second spell, since it is hard to consider Chiellini better than him(alas I am not a fan of Giorgio, who's massively overrated in my opinion). He had many chances from the third season on but due to his injuries he was never able to become a starter, then you read what happened and Juventus is not the type of club that forgives twice(Vidal docet).
