Dan Levene on the club transfer policy

Um, considering Roman has effectively written off the BILLION POUNDS he has already put into the club, why do you think he will suddenly change how he has run the club. He has shown no desire to profit from the club, in all his years of owning the club.

He has not written off the money. It stands as a debt of £1.052 billion* owed to him by Chelsea's parent company, Fordstam Ltd. He "lent" the money to Fordstam, and they used it to buy shares in Chelsea. So, although the club does not owe Roman any money, Fordstam does. Since CFC is Fordstam's sole asset, the only realistic way the debt could be repaid is by selling the club.

I do not believe that Roman will demand repayment of the existing loans although, technically, he can do so at 18 months notice*. Nor do I believe he is looking to profit from the club. Far from it in fact. Lending money and then accepting it's repayment without interest is not profiting, it's helping out.

Why do I think Roman will want to take the cost of rebuilding the stadium back out of the club? Because it's a lot of money and there has to be a limit somewhere. The cost is projected at £500m but may rise above that as is frequently the way with construction projects. On top of the huge sums he's already poured in, I doubt Roman has another £500m cash sitting in the bank ready to be stomped up. It's probable that he would have to raise the money by selling an asset or two. Assets which are probably profit making. How long can he carry on liquidating profitable enterprises, and ploughing the cash into an opperation which barely shows a return?

I was firmly in favour of relocating the stadium because then it might have been built at little or no net cost and with more ability to create exactly the design we wanted without all the compromises. That decision has been made however so we just have to get on with it. Even if the cost has to be repaid over 15-20 years, we can do it and keep progressing on the pitch.

What do we think of Levene these days?

I think he means well but comes off a bit self righteous at times.

Mostly on Twitter he belittles people for having a different view to him on how the club is run and doesn't seem to be able to distance himself from (clearly) immature people on there making unrealistic demands.

His coverage for things such as the new stadium are great but he could do with removing his blue tinted specs every now and then.

I can't see any pertinent information in the linked document but everybody knows who owns Fordstam. It's simply a mechanism which allows Chelsea to claim to be debt free, albeit on a technicality.

I don't want anyone to get the impression that I am criticising Roman for registering his cash injections as loans. In fact I'd be very critical of him if he hadn't. Putting the money in as direct investments, and opening the club and himself to potential tax liabilities, would be a stupid thing to do. Roman is not stupid.

So if he pulls in his debts he sends himself a letter demanding £1bn, then he sends himself a letter saying he refuses to pay, will he send in the heavies to beat himself up?

People are acting like Roman has been treating us as a charity case, he has been great, no doubt, a real fan and I know how other owners treat their clubs but he has leant us just over a billion we are valued at almost 1.5 billion, after buying us for 140 million, he won't be out of pocket that for sure, but as I've said ffp is an excuse the club use, he can't afford to spend the way he did before, if he could as we know ffp is a doddle to get round

Hope he sends them to beat you up

No one to argue with. If he wants his money out of the club he'll simply take it over a period of years or, if he's in hurry, he can sell up. That sale would then leave us in the hands of the unknown attitudes of an unknown buyer.

Don't want to blow my own horn, so to speak, but it looks like I was correct to have doubts about the state of our transfer dealings.

You aren't the only doubtful one in this forum.  By the way, what do you think will happen come end of the transfer window?  Your thoughts are appreciated.

I think in some perverse way the missing out on Lukaku may be the fillip the board needed to put aside their financial dogma in favour of a more pragmatic approach to the squad's needs...

Come end of the transfer window we'll have sold some players and we will definitely have signed some players. I guarantee it. No need to thank me, I've just been blessed with a gift of seeing into the future.

When do we ever spend big after winning the title we always stagnate.

IT'S as if to say "you did it last year with them you can do it this year too"

Saying that there's loads of time left. I just don't wanna be getting the players other top teams didnt want just because they are cheaper

Doesn't really mean a lot considering you own the club

Added him last summer tbh.

Might be useful if we had an actual list, then people know to ignore tweets and articles from these people.
