He wanted the incredible China money but when that couldn't happen he was fine with staying. It was when Conte told him to f**k off that he went to Brazil on strike. I never saw the evidence but apparently he showed the text to a journalist.

Conte's biggest flaw is his emotional side, he just couldn't forgive Costa for wanting to leave in the middle of a title charge. He did well to keep a lid on it till the end of the season though.
