I'd rather see Southgate publicly flogged on tower bridge and live streamed on the BBC for all to see. Don't care what anyone says, the manager has cost us dearly at multiple tournaments now and there's no prize for coming runners up. This was the easiest route to a Euro's final any team could have asked for and he made it look difficult. The first 60 minutes against Netherlands is the only time we actually went out and played the football we're capable of. He pissed about with Trent at CM the entire run up to the tournament when it blatantly wouldn't work, only to then ditch this at the very lst second. Continues to choose his favourites even when they aren't performing. Kane was nothing short of embarrassing this tournament and still starts every game. Trippier is old, slow and going through a divorce but still starts every game and takes no fit LB to Germany. Why would you not even take Mitchell is beyond weird. He hyped up Wharton pre-tournament and then gave him zero minutes on the pitch, he's had a season as good as anyone and can control a game but we'd rather have Rice playing based on reputation. Foden has been awful, starts every game. 7 starts, 0 goals, 0 assists. Can't stand the bloke, sack him and don't even think about giving him a knighthood.

July 16, 20242 yr I look forward to his replacement winning us the world cup and euros seeing as it's apparently so easy with our world class team then.

On the whole, our performances stunk this tournament out and we still haven't won anything. I want to see us playing football like we did under Venables, which we should be more than capable of with some of the talent we currently have.
July 16, 20242 yr So the FA have until 7 September, Nations League v Ireland, to find a replacement. And good riddance to Steve Holland too. Singlehandedly responsible for Ben White's absence. Edited July 16, 20242 yr by dermott

Failing at the final hurdle doesn't override that.
July 16, 20242 yr lucky for england that he quit and caused no more damage. In a time where international football is so poor he pissed about and wasted his chances. England had the best player in Germany, England and Spain yet fluffed their lines. Any manager can see that after Reece, TAA is the best RB in the country. Then not to take a LB, and then not to play a LW is crazy. He completely was out of his depth.. the only good thing is Kane still has no trophy.
July 16, 20242 yr Southgate was a very nice bloke and he did very well initially. He installed a little confidence and a good attitude, especially in the "waistcoat" years. BUT at the end of the day, he doesn't have the tactics and the strategy of a top class manager. He just doesn't. He would never ever be a manager of top English club and Real Madrid would not ever want him as a coach. Southgate simply doesn't have a tactical footballing brain. No game plan of any note. No footballing style at all - nice waistcoat though. This is the truth. Sure, give him a knighthood and an award designated for the english and their mediocrity. Perfect. Poch. Poch has tactics. Those players better be fit. Poch's approach is not a good fit for tournament football. Klopp. His football would work very well in a tournament. But he simply doesn't want the job. Lampard and/or Gerrard. Enthusiasm they have in abundance, but no, they are not proven managers in any way. Howe. No. Just no. Potter. He would make us the most boring team in the world. Great players reduced to excessive tediousness. Lee Carsley. Not even mentioned. But he actually won the U21 Euros - against Spain. Lee knows the young up and coming players (many of the Chelsea lads). Tuchel. A winner. A successful manager. He needs to be more flexible, but he has ideas and plans on how to win games and implements those ideas.

Theres a huge difference in reaching a quater final and reaching a final and you know there is. Getting knocked out in the quaters gives no indication that anything is working, there are teams that got knocked out in the quaters in this tournament that could be seen to be doing an awful lot wrong. To be consistantly in finals indicates you are putting yourself in a position to win trophies. I agree, its not enough and im sure Southgate agrees because he has now resigned. But its delusional to not see appearing in a final as more successful than losing in the quaters. And if your only barometer for success is silverwear, then you get a lovely losers medal for losing in the final and you dont in the quaters. Lovely stuff.
July 16, 20242 yr Delighted he’s gone. We were terrible. Most of the football served up was turgid. As bad as the Iceland and United States games in previous World Cups.

Not sure why you'd want to keep repeating failure rather than aim for better. Sounding very Arsenal-ey here thinking top 4 is a trophy.
July 16, 20242 yr On a personal note went off Southgate, when he explained that the reason the team continued to take the knee, was to educate people. It’s a delicate subject but what a patronising prick. Are we not able to form our own opinions…

Funniest thing about all of this is we should have been out in the quarters this year if not for Saka scoring a screamer (0.03xG) against the mighty Switzerland. Man for man we are FAR better than them except for maybe Akanji. We ended that game without creating a single big chance and 1/3 of the xG Switzerland had. I'm not sure how you can look at any game from this tournament and not think that something is fundamentally wrong. 8 years he's been with this squad and what progression have we seen? 3 years ago we lost the final to italy because we tried to sit in a low block after taking an early lead, rather than taking the game to the opposition. All tournament we've seen the same. We get an equaliser against Spain and again we stop attacking and look like we're trying to take it to penalties. We had a throw in next to their corner flag and the ball ended up back with Pickford, its f**king embarrassing. You can say its the players on the pitch but Southgate's had 8 (EIGHT) years to get this out of them and still he's picking the same players and the same style and doing absolutely nothing until we're losing. My barometer for success is playing a game of football to actually try to win, something that boot licker hasn't attempted all tournament. An appearance in the final has fooled people into thinking this was a successful campaign. The issues have been there since before the tournament started and the easiest run in and arguably the worst standard of international teams the Euros has seen in decades has glossed over a complete embarrassment again.

Playing on the front foot wins games. You'd be more than happy sat with Southgate playing the same sh*te for another 8 years because we get to celebrate another humiliation. But hey, at least we made the final! Bore off.
