Star Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 Everything done between Anelka's agents and Chelsea, following Bolton's permission to speak to the player, fee yet to be agreed but clubs not far apart and will continue talks after xmas break .. 100% concrete info.
mad_mac Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 oh well! hope he does some good, but i don't necessarily like this one. Our last signing from Bolton doesn't exactly install confidence in me; also, what happens when Didier comes back? Will Anelka sit on the bench happily? I don't think so; so, are we happy to shell out 8 million for a striker who will probably be with us for half a season, and only really start games played during the ACN?
Valerie Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 In case Anelka really does come: can somebody PLEASE tell him not to do that silly hand-locking-flapping-thingy when he's scored? He's allowed to score for us, definitely, I'm really flexible on that one, but that celebrating gesture
Gem Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 Agreed Valerie, it reminds me of trying to do a butterfly with your hands when casting a shadow. Numpty. This, of course, is the main issue on the transfer. Fee, wages, length, image rights, buy out clause... once the celebration has been fixed the rest can follow.
MHedges Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 In case Anelka really does come: can somebody PLEASE tell him not to do that silly hand-locking-flapping-thingy when he's scored? He's allowed to score for us, definitely, I'm really flexible on that one, but that celebrating gesture I believe he calls it "The Butterfly", and I can't wait to see it flapping!
Scott Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 Anything would be better than the geriatric Ukrainian has been. Sorry maybe I'm not a 'True' fan, but I've given up on Sheva. Bring on the Infant Terrible, at least he has a little pace.
The Moos Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 In case Anelka really does come: can somebody PLEASE tell him not to do that silly hand-locking-flapping-thingy when he's scored? He's allowed to score for us, definitely, I'm really flexible on that one, but that celebrating gesture If he scores for us he can do whateve celebration he wants to. I believe he calls it "The Butterfly", and I can't wait to see it flapping! Okay. So we have Sahar who does a kind of turkey and now we will get someone who makes a butterfly. We have Essien who's called The Bison and Lamps look like a hen. Are we trying to build a farm?
AmericanBlue Posted December 23, 2007 Posted December 23, 2007 Anelka's celebration is generally referred to as the "Dirty Bird" in American Football. Patented by Deon Sanders if I remember correctly.

I'm kinda thinking he will be as successful more like our Bolton signing a certain Mr Gudjohnsen ! I reckon Anelka is going to be a sensation here - in the words of the immortal Frank Sinatra - 'I state my case of which i'm certain.' Watch his goal at the weekend where he moves from an offside position (a la Thierry Henry in his prime) and unnoticed by the defence swivels and to perfection the through ball arrives and bang goal ! In a forward three (unlike Sheva - who was again bleedin crap today - the sooner we offload him the better - the biggest waste of money in football history) his pace will have the opposition in tatters with Essien and Lamps and Joey Cole not to mention SWP and Kalou ready to feed him. Alongside the Drog - well defences wont know what will hit them. I honestly believe Anelka's signing could give as a chance in the Champions League, along with the FA Cup our only chance of silverware this season (my money is on Everton knocking us out of the Carling Cup - and we wont challenge Man Utd for the title) Anelka finishes like JFH and is a class act in my opinion - a fantastic signing.
mad_mac Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 I truly hope that you are right Star. I wasn't the biggest fan of Drogba when we first got him, but I have warmed to him over the past season and a bit! My main concern isn't in Anelka the player, as we all know he can score...and yes I did see his goals (but we could say "it was against the Brum"), it is whether or not we will accomodate him in the team? If Drogba leaves in the summer (your mention of Frank, does that mean he will be staying, or are you merely talking about this season?) then I think we will bring someone else in...Probably Huntelaar...as our main striker. Either way, whether this season or next, Anelka will always be our second choice striker. I just wonder about his temprament if that were to be the case. At Bolton right now, he is the cream of the crop. But down at SW6 I wonder just how easily he will handle the not playing every game? SCott
MannyJello Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 star - the inside info is always appreciated. thanks. anelka has been quoted as saying his silly goal celebration is an "inside joke" between him and some of his friends back in france. maybe it means, "zees stoopid english-speaking peoples can stuff it up zere arses!" or something like that. maybe we can get maka to translate for us.
abramovich Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 Anelka is a top quality striker, there's no question about it. His attitude apart, he is the kind of talent most teams would love to have in their lineup. Look at the list of clubs he had played for, you won't get into Arsenal and Real Madrid by being crap at what you do. He always struck me as someone who had a lot of promise and never lived up to it. Then again he is only 28, and he is playing some of the best football of his career. Hopefully he has learned from past mistakes and matured enough to realize that this may be his last shot at glory. The way we struggle for goals he can't arrive to the Bridge soon enough.
Tim W Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 He can get his willie out and wave his nuts as long as he scores
coombsie Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 One of my pals, a Man Ure season ticket holder tells me that Le Sulk is also the main target of the Mancs and is "certain" to join them. He reckons they will trump any offer that Chelsea make and do actually have more money available. Anelka would also prefer to stay in the North.

Fear not cos' striding down a lane in Surrey was Maka, Anelka and Petit ? and they were not going to a teddy bears picnic
Tim Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 Why does it have to be a case of Anelka or Didier when he returns? It is perfectly possibly that we would play with the two of them up front, which would scare the bejeezus out of pretty much all defenses. This, I like.
blizeH Posted December 24, 2007 Posted December 24, 2007 Agree with that Tim, I'm sat here with a big grin on my face just thinking about it ::Thumbs up::

Because Chelsea simply do not play with 2 strikers
Tim Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 But we do and we have! Remember the diamond of death behind two strikers last season? Furthermore, given our aim to play more exciting football, surely there's every chance that Grant might consider a move to a more attacking 4-4-2? All speculation, obviously, but as has been pointed out by many, Grant has yet to be able to put his stamp on the team so who knows how Chels will play once he has this opportunity.
Killbill Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 Furthermore, given our aim to play more exciting football, surely there's every chance that Grant might consider a move to a more attacking 4-4-2? IMO the quicker we move away from the 4-3-3 the better, we do not have the personnel anymore. As for Anelka, on paper, it does sound like an awsome pairing with Drogba but my concern is that he has "failed" at all the big clubs he has played after leaving Arsenal.

Those being PSG, Man City, Fenerbahce, and Bolton? Am I missing one?
loz Posted December 25, 2007 Posted December 25, 2007 Real Madrid and a hit and miss loan move to Liverpool
