They are brilliant films! Shame the third one is a bit sh*t.

Yea, I'm not keen on the third one. The second film is a little underrated I think, I couldn't stop laughing at the wheelchair scene.

ridiculous 6 (adam sandler's netflix movie) 1/10 hollywood need to stop him from making movies anymore

Creed. Poor.

really? haven't seen it but reviews has been really good saying movie's a lock for oscar nomination

Don't know. Maybe it's just me, but the quality of films seems to have become really quite poor.

You want the acting to be believable, the story and characters to be engaging. A lot of the films that get hyped just seem to be very shiny with explosions and effects, etc, and little substance or quality acting.

I'm no expert, but if a film is engaging it's good in my book. At no point did I find myself thinking, I want to see what happens next. It just felt very insipid, and having to stare at Stallone's horribly misshapen face made it all the worse.

(Why do these people bother with all the surgery when they end up looking the way they do? Honestly, just age gracefully...)

Aaanyway. I thought the new Star Wars was a bit meh as well...so take my thoughts with a pinch of salt, seeing as everyone else seems to think that was fantastic, too. :)

I've never been a Star Wars fan and didn't watch the old ones. I think the only one I did watch was the last prequel that came out with Ewan McGregor. That was actually pretty interesring, and I went into it with no background knowledge on the Starwars Universe.

I get the feeling there is a lot of playing on nostalgia in the new one with fans getting to see their old favourite characters again and what not, maybe the reason why everyone seems to love it.

BTW - Kurt Zouma's acting skills are not that great.

Escape to Victory, a great cult movie that I've liked a lot for quite a while, I've never understood the mediocre ratings, but perhaps only football fans can fully appreciate it. Anyway, why not sit the squad down and let them watch it, it's full of passion and belief, something which we lack.

The Lobster - A very strange black comedy set in an alternate reality where single people are rounded up by the authorities and sent away to a remote hotel where they are expected to find themselves a partner within forty days. Anybody who fails to pair up is then transformed into an animal of their choosing and sent off into the wilderness to fend for themselves.

This has a surprisingly good cast (including Colin Farrell, Olivia Colman, John C Reilly and Rachel Weisz) considering the modest budget, and provides a few good laughs despite being quite bleak and brutal for the most part. I enjoyed how the film ridicules the strange social pressures we put ourselves under to get hitched, reproduce and live our lives in what is generally considered to be a "normal" way.

It definitely won't be everyone's cup of tea, but since everything else currently showing at the cinema seems to be aimed at kids then it might be a good option for people who fancy seeing something a bit different.

Circle (2015) - a decent psychological thriller done in the 12 Angry Men one room, real time sort of style. It explores a few current social issues and questions of morality - far from perfect but a decent and entertaining watch.

And bluedave, reading through this thread, you seem to have a somewhat similar taste in films as I do. I might give that last one a pass but I'm eager to check out some other ones you've mentioned.

Circle sounds quite good actually, that's a new one to me. I tend to enjoy and seek out lesser known films that just take an interesting/weird concept and run with it.

I like this thread and there's a few other people in particular who's recommendations I always look out for (including Maksimov, youlots, moi, and probably some others that I'll remember later).

Definitely have a look when you can, I agree that some of these more obscure movies can be a bit of a fresh breath from the more popular ones.

This definitely sounds like my cup of tea, Bluedave. Thank you for highlighting it. If I can't find it in a cinema, I'll buy the DVD! There seem to be so many crappy films showing at the moment.

P.S. On looking it up I discovered it is by the man who directed Dogtooth, a very bizarre and disturbing film which i found to be compelling viewing.

I didn't realise he directed Dogtooth, that was also a very strange film but quite engrossing from what I can remember. I think that if you were not put off by all the weirdness in Dogtooth then you'll have no problem with The Lobster. I went to see it at the local Curzon cinema, I've no idea if they have those in France.

The Hateful 8.

5.5/10

Disappointing. I was expecting more from Tarantino. The story telling felt lazy, all very drawn out etc.

Django unchained was a much better film, a far superior story.

I am terrible with films, i have such a back log of ones i mean to watch, that they eventually just get forgotten about !!

But i did finally get around to watching 'moon', the film directed by duncan jones, david bowies son and really enjoyed it. None of the normal big bang must of cost billions american bullsh*t that seems to be the norm now days, just a good psychological one man and a robot thriller, actually quite sad as well

I thought it looked really promising from the trailers but I'll certainly take your thoughts into consideration, and especially as Tarantino's set a high standard for himself from previous movies.

Same mate, I thought it looked amazing! If you go in with low expectations you might enjoy it more haha.

Has scored highly on IMDB, but I dont trust that site anymore really, pretty sure people are paid to hype up new films etc.

I have pretty low expectations. Tarantino movies used to be something to look forward to, but it's been years since that has been the case for me. Inglourious Basterds was such a disappointing movie that I haven't even bothered to see Django. As for The Hateful Eight... I get suspicious when more is talked about the fact that the movie was shot on 70mm film than anything else about the movie.
