Last Movie You Watched

I first misread it as Klinsmann and for a brief moment wondered: "Oh, I didn't know they've already made a movie about him..." :happy001:

Well it would be just like the US to come out and do something like that.

Tonight I went to see Leonardo DiCaprio's reinterpretation of the Black Knight from Monty Python's Holy Grail. Not sure if it's Leo's year at the Oscars this year, but Emmanuel Lubezki probably will complete his hat trick of awards for cinematography.

Just watched Schindlers list for the first time in years. What a film, simply outstanding.

A brilliant film. The book from which it was adapted, Schindler's List by Thomas Keneally is worth reading. Very moving.

The Lobster.

Very offbeat 'romcom' set in a dystopian future where single people of a certain age are turned into animals if they don't find a partner at a mysterious 'hotel'.

Colin Farrell is the star, looking a bit porky, and he turns up with his dog (formerly his brother) looking for 'love' knowing that if he doesn't find someone he'll be turned into the titular lobster (his choice). A very weird film but oddly touching, occasionally devastating and might make you think about what love is. Is it just finding someone you have something in common with or is it finding someone that you would change yourself for.

It is slow, it does have some issues in the second-half of the film and it is sometimes very bleak indeed but it also has some incredibly funny moments. 8/10

Dead End Drive-In - Cheesy 1980's Australian B-movie about a young couple who go on a date to a remote drive-in theatre only to find it's really a prison camp for young degenerates and they are trapped inside. It has a similar OTT style to it as films such as the Original Mad Max and Warriors, with plenty of cartoon violence and a fantastic early 80s rock soundtrack. Great fun.

^ I should think it is more likely that it will NOT be enjoyed by those who liked the TV series!

Cinema was full of older people talking about the series during adverts.

When I first saw they were making it, I thought it would be a pile of crap.  But then I saw the cast and thought it surely couldn't be as bad as all that.  I haven't seen it but the cast made me at least consider it.

Watched David Lynch's Wild at Heart a couple of weeks ago. The protagonist (Sailor) gets out of prison and goes on a roadtrip with his girlfriend (Lula). Her overbearing mother sends some hitmen after them and it all spirals out of control from there. It was excellent and the level of absurd you would expect from a Lynch film; Nicolas Cage was really good as the main character (and does a surprisingly strong Elvis impersonation). I also enjoyed the cameos from some of the Twin Peaks actors (Audrey as the car accident girl, Laura Palmer as the Good Witch, Jack Nance as a lunatic). Bonus points for Angelo Badalementi doing the soundtrack - 8/10

While on this Cage vein I also watched Leaving Las Vegas, in which he plays an alcoholic screenwriter whose addiction spirals out of control. He hires a prostitute (Elisabeth Shue), and they embark on a bizarre and dark semi-romantic sojourn to Las Vegas where Cage intends to drink himself to death. It's pretty f**ked but also enjoyable; not quite as memorable as Wild at Heart. - 7.5/10

Went to see Joy last night (I hadn't checked we were playing when I agreed to go).

I really liked it though everyone else I went with thought it was a bit slow.  It kept my interest all the way through (even though I did occasionally wonder how we were getting on!).  I don't think it would be for everyone but the characters were interesting and the plot a bit different.

Mississippi Burning, for the first time in a long, long while. Still as fantastic, surreal and eye-opening as it was when I first saw it.

A brilliant film. A few years since I've watched it. Must watch it again. Gene Hackman is a brilliant actor.

^ Are you sure? Last I checked he had taken a sabbatical from acting and was managing in China.

Thanks. You're right. Checked and he hasn't had an acting role for some years. Didn't realise that he has co-written a few books.

Haha sorry I had no idea about that, I was trying to resurrect the old 'Phil Scolari looks like Gene Hackman' jokes
