Yeah I don't know what to make of it, I think that's about right. The visuals weren't short of stunning and some of the scenes were very gruesome, but I thought the story moved really slowly in parts. Decent but DiCaprio's definitely made better.

Agreed. Visually it was amazing. But for me Tom Hardy was better than DiCaprio, he should win the Best Supporting Actor gong anyway, even if I couldn't hear what he was mumbling most of the time.

I found the story really dragged in the middle section, after such a great beginning. The scene with the bear was intense! If that's all CGI (i.e. not a combination of digital and practical effects) then colour me impressed.

I think Bryan Cranston might pip Leo to the Oscar.

7/10.

Straight Outta Compton, 8/10 a must see for fans of the group & 90s' rap music in general. Very disappointing that they brushed out a lot of their misdemeanours.

Fast & Furious 6, 6/10 I've not seen 7, but for me this was the weakest of the lot (apart from Tokyo Drift) the action was just to OTT.

Got round to watching spectre last night, an enjoyable film but not in my top 5 bond films.

Not a film as such, but we've recently watched all The Sopranos. Never seen it, I cannot do justice to how fine it is; the duchess and I haven't stopped discussing it. We are going to rewatch it sensibly, as opposed to gorging on it as we did.

I rewatched that recently as well. After months of pestering him to do so, my friend finally gave it a go and loved it. Absolutely brilliant series, one of the best I've ever seen.

so the oscar nominees have been announced, my personal best picture ranking

1.room, this year best film for me, incredible powerful film, if you haven't watched it don't watch any of the trailers it really spoils the ending

2.mad max

3.spotlight (will probably win it)

4.bridge of spies

5.martian

6.revenant

7.brooklyn

8.big short

I watched "Legend" yesterday, the story of the Kray Twins.

Tom Hardy plays both brothers and puts in a brilliant performance. Fantastic actor.

Well played out story from an interesting time

8/10

Even after having read that, it sounds like something I'd like to see. I mean, Iñárritu has created some extraordinary cinema and just because some critic feels uncomfortable watching it, doesn't mean I'm not going to want to witness for myself. It might be terrible, but I want to make my mind about it and not say something because some critic wrote a piece about it.

Went to see Carol tonight. Absolutely dire.  Abysmal. Turgid. I spent the first half thinking "when is something going to happen?" and the second part "when is this going to end?".  Lots of lingering "artistic" shots.  Of things like eating an apple.  Fine if you like that sort of thing.  I really, really don't.  Oh and I didn't care about the characters at all.  And this has been critically acclaimed?

Did you get that I didn't like it?

I thoroughly enjoyed watching Predestination last night. It's a fairly low-key time travel film from Australia (though set in New York, mostly) based on a short story by Robert A Heinlein (All You Zombies). It has a very clever story that twists itself into one giant time travel paradox that keeps you thinking long after the film has ended. The dialogue and acting is very good, and the various time periods (1970s, 60s and 40s, mostly) are recreated with a lot of style.

I enjoyed predestination. Really like sci fi films that get you thinking. A bit similar to looper though, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

The Revenant up for 12 Oscars haha, my goodness

Pretty much sums up what the Oscars have become and the standard of films out just now.

Good film but 12 Oscars? that's crazy.

so which categories ya'll don't think revenant deserve to be nominated in?

The ones that stick out are:

Best Actor

Best Supporting Actor

Best Picture

I think it deserves one for it's look though as it's a great looking film and shot extremely well.

you don't think leo and hardy's performances are oscar worthy?

the story may be a bit lousy and drags too long, but i think the film deserves all the nominations

it's not like there are other films/performances that are better and more deserving, can't fault the academy for the lack of standard in film this year

No.

Hardy mumbles his way through the film doing his best Lawless performance. It was a decent performance but Oscar? He was far better in Legend as the Kray brothers.

If Leo wins it this year it will be his weakest performance yet that he's been up for.

Those two performances are not Oscar worthy IMO unless your standards have dropped by quite a bit.

I haven't seen the film but would suggest that any film where "the story may be a bit lousy and drags too long" should not be up for best film!  But then I hate the idea of style over substance.

well we have to agree to disagree chelsbear i thought the lead actors performances in revenant like in any other innaritu films were amazing especially leo and hardy and both oscar worthy

again it's not like there are other that are better, 2015 has been a pretty disappointing year in films imo, the fact that a typical romantic movie like brooklyn is nominated for best picture says it all. does the revenant deserve to be nominated for best picture this year? absolutely yes but does it deserve to be nominated best picture last year? absolutely not
