Hmmm... I just noticed I've seen four out of five of the movies that are nominated for the best director Oscar. I haven't seen Room yet and I'm not sure if I will.

I highly recommend it, you'll see this year's best actress Oscar winner at the same time too.

The Rum Diary, starring Johnny Depp.

It's the film adaptation of the novel by Hunter S Thompson, which I read recently. Depp is perfectly cast as Paul Kemp, the journalist. And the island setting of Puerto Rico is stunning. The problem is, a lot of the spirit of the book is lost upon screen. Parts that made the book great don't appear in the film, and they cut out one of the book's funniest characters (Yeamon) altogether.

One thing I will say, is the the woman playing Chenault is one of the most beautiful woman I have ever seen! But not enough to shake off the feeling of disappointment by the time the credits roll. One of the few occasions when I'd say a film isn't long enough. It really needed that extra half-hour to include some of the better bits from the book (such as the Moberg-Lotterman confrontation at the end!).

6/10.

Just looked it up and yep, she's stunning! Not my type as I prefer brunettes but to each their own.

And the screenplay was written by Bruce Robinson who wrote and directed Withnail and I.  He also wrote a brilliant book called The Peculiar Memories of Thomas Penman.

Now I've seen all the movies which are nominated for the best film editing Oscar and if it were up to me, I'd give it to Mad Max. It's not the best movie out of the five, mind you. If you look at the movie as a whole it's hard to put them in order, but I say this is just about right:

Spotlight

The Big Short

Mad Max: Fury Road

The Revenant

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Ha, the Academy agreed with me on the film editing award and the best picture award.

I wouldn't be surprised if they had CONSULTED you, Maksimov!!  :happy001:

If they had, I probably would've given the best director award to Adam McKay ahead of Inarritu, but he got the award for best adapted screenplay, so at least the movie wasn't completely snubbed.

Oh and they agreed with me on the cinematography award as well:

Not sure if it's Leo's year at the Oscars this year, but Emmanuel Lubezki probably will complete his hat trick of awards for cinematography.

Good for Leo that he finally got his award and he had a good speech. Ennio Morricone finally got a "proper" Oscar to place next to his honorary Oscar. Leo probably should've already got his first award for a previous role, but even more than that, Morricone should've got one decades ago.

think fassbender deserve it more but yea like scorsese with departed he got rewarded for his whole body of work rather than his performance in revenant, still it's long overdue

a bit sad seeing sly lose, probably his last big chance to win an oscar, picturing the man going onto the stage with the rocky music blaring in the background and a standing ovation from the whole crowd would probably be the most awesome moment in oscar history, but rylance did deserved it

Finally got round to seeing The Revenant this week. Although it's very good, well made film, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I thought I would. That's not to say I didn't enjoy it (I did), it just didn't blow my socks off like I was expecting based on all the praise I'd heard.

london has fallen 4/10

god awful cgi, predictable brainless plot, kinda prefer the first one

I watched Olympus on Channel 5 last night.  Quite liked it actually.

I think it was visually quite impressive, but lacked substance. The "dream sequences" felt pretty pasted on. Basically it's a very traditional revenge story and a pretty simple one at that.

As I've just had a week off work I've managed to watch a fair few movies lately:

The Martian - 8/10

Mad Max, Fury Road - 8/10

Sicario - 9/10

The Monuments Men - 2/10

London Has Fallen.

1/10 and I don't even know where that 1 came from. Worst movie I've seen at the cinema (well, tied with Paul Bart: Mall Cop), do not see it people, atrocious.

Yes I got that from the dream sequences too. I didn't think they cohered very well with the gritty realism of the film on the whole. I didn't have a problem with it being a simple revenge story, I tend to like revenge stories in general, but for some reason I didn't find it very satisfying.

Mission Impossible 5 (paraphrasing) "Oh my god, they're going to kill the British Prime Minister"......oh no...... oh hang on, that's Cameron - go, go baddies!"

Having a 5 year old daughter means I have seen all the recent Disney and Pixar films.

Are Pixar losing it?

The Good Dinosaur was their worst offering yet, 4/10, soulless, dull characters. Previous to that was Inside Out 5.5/10, not fun enough and was too focused on the emotion theme of the film building up to the end.

Finding Dory is out this summer...lets hope they bounce back. :-)

I am not on the whole a fan of these films,. and have several times fallen asleep while in the cinema with my grandchildren.

But one that I love is the King Fu Panda series!
