Last Movie You Watched

The Huntsman: Winter's War.

7/10, I enjoyed it. Emily Blunt deserved more screen time but there wasn't really anywhere to fit it in. Jessica Chastain is awesome and Chris Hemsworth is absolutely ridiculously gorgeous. I mean wow.

10 cloverfield lane 8/10

great constant misdirection throughout, john goodman's always awesome (even in an abomination of a film that's the monuments men)

not sure about all those things that happen in the last part of the movie tho, unnecessary and felt too hollywood-y

Just finished watching The Jam documentary "About the Young Idea". It's alright, but I doubt it's very interesting for those who aren't fans of The Jam.

Now I'm watching a concert movie of The Jam performing somewhere in Germany in 1980.

Just come back from watching High Rise.  Has anyone else seen it?   It's erm....interesting.  I still don't really know whether I liked it - the first half was interesting if slightly surreal, the second half was just plain bonkers.

Saw the trailer for it and thought it looked interesting! Is it anythign like Judge Dredd? lol.

No idea - never seen Judge Dredd.  I'd say give it a go - I wouldn't actually recommend it as such but I am still thinking about.  It felt like there was a bit missing in the middle that explained what led to the second part of the film.  A number of people left the cinema around 3/4 of the way through (I can't remember when that happened before). And of the group of 9 of my friends, only two of us thought it was interesting - most of the others hated it!

It's quite violent and sexual too in places too - but I don't suppose that will bother you!

Usually it's a sign that you're watching an art movie... :happy001:

The last time I remember that happening was when I went to see one of those archive screenings of Tarkovsky's "Stalker".

I finally went to see Anomalisa:

It was a weird one. Well, probably not as weird as you'd expect from Kaufman, but the stop-motion animation probably made it a lot less awkward than it might've been if it had been a normal live action movie. I do wonder what it would've been like if it had been a live action movie. If nothing else, the rating probably would've been higher than 12.

I've heard of it, but I haven't seen it. Is it any good?

I enjoyed it, but it is strange - a very difficult film to categorize.  But I would recommend it to you.

I quite liked Anomalisa. I think if it was live action it would have been a bit a bit too mundane, but the stop-motion animation gave it a slightly surreal feel. Great script, and as a technical achievement it's fantastic.

I agree. It could easily have been done as a live action movie, but the tone would've been different.

Yes, it's not easy to pull off something like that and have the audience buy into the concept as well as they did with this one. Well, at least it worked really well for me.

I know what you mean, it's very much a film of two halves. I don't think there's one event that triggers the decent into violence, it's more an accumulation of grievances that builds up to a flash point, with Wilder as the catalyst. The film is based on a JG Ballard novel and his writing tends to have a sort of dreamlike (or nightmarish) quality, and I think knowing that made it easier for me to accept the way things unfolded in the film.

Yeah I guess I was just surprised how quickly it went from slight dissatisfaction to complete carnage!  Almost one scene to the next!.  Much as I thought it odd and wasn't sure if I liked it, I really think I would quite like to watch it again to "get it" a bit more.

And I think I'd like to read the book too.

The Jungle Book - 4/10.

I know I can't compare it to the cartoon too much but the only animal character who sounded right was Bagheera. Idris Elba as Shere Khan completely ruined it. That Tiger is supposed to give you nightmares, he was one of the first vicious Disney villain and his common north London accent came through far too often.

I hope some heads rolled. Not vindictive enough, not articulate enough, not menacing enough, not scary enough. The only time he came across as a real villain is through the CGI.

George Sanders is the ONLY Shere Kahn!

I tried to watch it without comparing it to the original but half the intensity with any villain comes from the voice, he made the character a lot weaker than it should be.

Agree, George Sanders was brilliant. What a great voice.

Will be interesting to compare the new film with the cartoon and the 1942 version made by the Korda brothers. I think the cartoon version is one of the first films I saw. A great film with superb music. Walt Disney's last film?

First bad review I've heard Gem. Interesting.

A lot of people have praised the voice roles so I'm probably in the minority with my opinion. Ben Kingsley as Bagheera was inspired, beautifully executed.

Matt Damon in the The Martian.

Disappointed after all the awards it was nominated for, worth watching but not 'wow'.

6/10

I watched it the other day too and was disappointed. I thought Damon's character had it a bit too easy for someone stranded on another planet! I preferred Cast Away.

Watched a film the other day called Open Water, about a couple who go scuba diving and their boat accidentally leaves them behind. Very well done.

Watched Moneyball last night.

For a film about baseball and statistics it wasn't too bad.

That said I'm quite a big fan of Brad Pitt, I think he's got a great filmography I'll watch most stuff he's in.

I really like this film, watched it a couple of times.

Watched ant man last night and loved it. I like the marvel films that dont take themselves too seriously
