Went to see High Rise last night, an adaptation of JG Ballard's novel directed by Ben Wheatley. The reviews have been very mixed but I thought it was excellent and actually enjoyed it more than the book.

This is the one with the Clockwork Orange style poster, right? Was it "Kubricky" in terms of style?

The poster was clearly heavily influenced by the famous Clockwork Orange poster. I'm not sure what you mean by "Kubricky" though, when I think of Stanley Kubrick I immediately think of 2001, Full Metal Jacket, Dr Strangelove, The Shining, etc., all very different stylistically.

They're different in terms of genre, but there are some techniques he uses a lot, like "one point perspective" when he composes shots. And was there any other Clockwork Orange references apart from the poster?

Straight Outta Compton

I think NWA members being involved in the film meant that the portrayal of their past was done so that they always came out of it looking favourable when they weren't as innocent as the film made out.

Think it went on a bit too long as well but was interesting none the less.

Haha indeed, I believe I have just saved you a couple of hours of your life, you're welcome ;-) . I intend to see Cloverfield so perhaps you could return the favour and let me know if it's worth seeing!

Sorry for the belated reply, and thank you again! Yes Cloverfield is definitely worth seeing, I wasn't happy with the ending but there was lots of suspense and drama throughout to keep you captivated. John Goodman was pretty great.

I've finally watched the latest James Bond film Spectre and the umpteenth episode of Star Wars. I had read comments that this was the best Bond film ever: I was a tad disappointed by the story line. The all-powerful evil genius bores me, to be honest, and it was all so serious! Quantum of Solace was already slightly yawn-inducing, but Spectre didn't do much for me either.

The Awakening I feel is only interesting to those who enjoyed the first 3 films (well, episodes four to six). The melted Darth Vader mask was so silly, it made me laugh out loud. The storyline borrows heavily from the original films and didn't offer much in originality. I had a private cheer when Harrison Ford made his entrance, though. He has certainly improved as an actor in all those years!

I went to see Son of Saul the other day. It's the winner of this year's Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars (and loads of other awards). It was good, but I guess I was slightly disappointed. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't quite as good as I hoped it would be. It's a solid movie and I really liked the way it was shot. The really shallow depth of field and the narrower academy aspect ratio really added to the atmosphere. It didn't feel like a gimmick at all.

Solid, but I'm not sure if it's a classic.

Sicario

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3397884/

"An idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by a government task force to aid in the escalating war against drugs at the border area between the U.S. and Mexico."

Been meaning to watch this for a while... very interesting concept and movie, based off a very real life problem.

A little slow moving in parts but overall tense and for the most part I couldn't take my eyes off it. Emily Blunt is the lead character, but for me Benicio Del Toro absolutely steals the show. He was brilliant.

I was expecting a few more gangster shootouts and general action scenes, and because there wasn't that many its not a film you would maybe rush back to over and over..... but overall this is well worth a watch.

7.5 / 10

The Birds.

Not sure I will watch it ever again, scariest sh*t I've ever seen. 10/10, I hated it.

I watched it as a kid and was scared witless, especially watching the scene when Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) and Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) turn up at the farm house and find the farmer dead. Won't say anymore just in case people haven't seen it.

When the mother goes to whoever that guy's house is and finds him with his eyes pecked out did it for me. In fact any scene with Birds in pretty much scared the hell out of me(!) When they're all stalking on the climbing frames and come through the window too. Eeeugh shuddering just thinking about it. And don't get me started on the sister wanting to take the love birds with them at the end because they've done nothing wrong. The whole town has just been teorrised and some killed by birds, why would you want to take anything like a bird with you???

I haven't seen either (only the re-make of the Omen unfortunately) and I can say that they aren't as scary as the original Wicker Man. I shudder just thinking about it!

If we're talking scary then London has Fallen tops the list I'm afraid, it physically takes 2 hours from your life that you will never, EVER get back.

The original Wicker Man is a great film. Have seen it a few times over the years. Christoper Lee is brilliant as Lord Summerisle.  Have never seen the re-make with Nicholas Cage - read some of the reviews and I recall that it was slated.

I saw the remake of the Wicker Man and it was bloody awful.

Not seen the original but never heard anybody say it wasn't good.

The original scared me rigid!

I think older horror films are much better than today's CGI Gore offerings.

My faves are..

The Omen

An American Werewolf in London

The Original Nightmare on Elm Street

The Amityville Horror
