25 years ago today...

Featured Replies

Sorry to bring the mood down a bit, but it was 25 years ago that 56 people died at a football match between Bradford City & Lincoln City. Fire took hold in a wooden stand, and spread alarmingly quickly, trapping many fans. This disaster tends to get overlooked, as three weeks later came Heysel.

Please spare a moment or two to think of the people who died that day at Bradford and of their families who never saw them again, when after all, they'd only gone to the football for the afternoon.

I'm posting a clip showing the disaster, just so people who don't remember it can see how terrible it was - but please don't watch it if you're easily shocked or upset, the video shows people suffering and is pretty graphic in places

Kind of puts things in perspective, football-wise

We must have posted this at exactly the same time BB. That clip is harrowing.

RIP

And huge credit also to the brave individuals who helped drag other people away from the flames.

A shocking tragedy, I'd seen stills before but never video footage of it, the speed with which it took hold was terrifying.

RIP

RIP - gone but not forgotten

RIP very sad pictures! Good show from everyone that helped pull people out, the guy that was in flames was a really scary picture. Is there any information on how the fire started, because it seems to come from under the stand?

RIP to all those that died

Its shocking and amazing that this gets overlooked when its just as horrific as the other tragedies. Watching that video, and seeing how fast that little fire consumes the whole place its just awful, as is the sight of human beings with parts of their bodies on fire.

Its an awful thing to say "at least we learned from this tragedy" but I hope to god we never see something like this again.

Just like the Hillsbrough disaster I can never bring myself to watch the footage again. Like a lot of us on here I have vivid memories of seeing it on TV when it happened and never want to watch it again. Far too much human suffering.

To the families and friends who lost loved ones every day must still be tinged with sadness and this date in particular must be harrowing, not just on big anniversaries, but every single year.

Apparently he did not make it.

"One man, engulfed in flames, made it on to the pitch but later died of his injuries."

A horrible day and a terrible thing to happen, RIP. I can actually remember it being on TV though i was only about 11 and it really upset me.

I remember seeing this on Grandstand as a breaking news, the events that unfolded before our eyes were shockingly graphic. Having lost my Nan in a house fire a couple of years previous it brought back a lot of strong feelings. RIP to all.

I've seen the clip many times as it's part of a health and safety course held in my company. The pain of watching those people suffer never ever subsides though. Truly tragic but I'm glad they got some respect this year for once.

I read a story in the paper last week - a man, who was then a boy, who's grandmother summonsed every ounce of strength and pushed him up over the barriers and onto the pitch. It was be the last thing she ever did for her grandson, she perished in the fire. Even typing this now I'm getting a lump in my throat, when I read the story I was sobbing. I can't imagine the pain they went through - rest in peace x

I can't watch the footage either.

What I find disgusting is how people are just waiting on the pitch and celebrating as the stand burnt down. Sickening. Also you feel that they could have been saved if they had been evacuated properly.

people on the pitch actually didnt realise the seriousness of the situation as it unfolded and the speed at which the fire took hold. The natural instinct of most people was to head for what they thought were the exits at the back but these were locked and so they unfortunatly perished. A lot of heros were borne , fans helping fans police likewise till they were not able to help anymore. It was overall a very sad incident and it paved the way for new stadia law in this country. Lets hope this kind of incident doesnt happen again. RIP to all that died. Sadly though football wasn't to learn its lesson and more people were to lose their lives just 2 weeks later.

awful and tragic. i can't bring myself to read the report or watch the video.

all i can do is hope sincerely that nothing like it ever happens again.

I remember this happening live, and the picture of the old fella stroling out whilst engulfed in flames has always stuck with me. Amazing just how quick it all went up, and that 56 people died!

Sitting there one afternoon singing along to your favourite club, and then either dying or having someone you know and love die...it's just beyond belief!

shocking footage and you just sit there in silence trying to work it all out

still sat in silence some 20mins sfterwards and thinking but only drawing blanks.

i could be way off the mark here but did chelsea fc not play glasgow rangers in a friendly

at SB, that was tied in with the bradford fire fund appeal not long after
