I remember Gunter Netzer praising Hudson after a game against England, saying something like, where have England been hiding this great player. Sadly Hudson only got 2 or 3 England caps. Absolute madness. There was a story, that Bill Shankly went into the Stoke dressing room, ignored everyone else, shook Hudson's hand and said it was one of the best midfield performances he had ever seen, after Hudson had completely destroyed Liverpool whilst playing for Stoke.

I remember reading that. It was in Hudson's book.

Top row Droy, Hudson, Garland, Hinton. 2nd row Webb, Dempsey, Harris, Cooke. 3rd row The King, Baldwin, Boyle. Bottom row Phillips, McCreadie, Kember, Hollins, Mulligan and Bonetti. Hard for me to forget this team as it was my first season going to the match. Ian Hutchinson is missing from both photos.

When my little legs couldn't take it, I was lifted up on to the shoulders of one of 'em. Everybody walked in those days because nobody could afford a car. It was like one of those L.S.Lowry paintings. There were hundreds of us strolling along. It took bloody hours but the excitement of hearing the crowd roar (we always seem to get there late!), and thoughts of tiredness disappeared. Then my old man would shout out "Pass my nipper down the front will yer?" and I would get hoisted up and along, over the heads of everybody down to the front of the terraces like some rock star at a concert!
