Like most people I've been binge-watching all the reruns of old Chelsea matches, going as far back as the cup run in 1970. Most players and matches have been exactly as I remember them, but a few have impressed me more than they did back then (no surprise, as I was just a kid in the early 70s). Chris Garland was certainly one of those. He fitted in really well, showed intelligence, skill, good link-up play and good finishing. Other players who have stood out are Houseman - who was never really a fan-favourite, but showed a lot of quality - and Hollins, who was probably our most important midfielder. Superb energy and excellent use of the ball - playing the way Sarri wanted Kante to play! It goes without saying that Ossie and Bonetti were top quality. Our defenders were all hard as nails and did try and play football, even on appalling surfaces. On the other hand, Steve Kember has looked totally underwhelming - no impact at all, which is what I remember. The refs were diabolical, as were the pitches, the worst being the beach/ cabbage patch at WHL for the semi v Watford in 1970. The worst performance by a million miles was in the 5-0 thrashing at Newcastle in '74, the season we went down. Edited April 26, 20206 yr by Backbiter
April 26, 20206 yr Really sad news re Chris Kember. My old dear sadly suffers from Alzheimers Disease. So I have some kind of understanding of it.

I bet Bates was bent out of shape by that shop. Was constantly hectoring fans who spent money in pubs, hot dog stalls, non official merchandise

To the right were two shops, a furniture store and an off licence a well as the 118 bus stop going towards Mitcham and Streatham, and opposite that for the bus to Morden tube that I used to catch every morning when I first started work, just a bit further to the right was the Blue Star garage, the only place around to buy ciggies on a Sunday evening back then. It's almost 40 years since I moved away, but that neck of the woods will always be home to me. Tooting & Mitcham Utd's ground there now.

No one saw the backs of shirts and back then they were numbered 1-12. very really When needed like testimonials they didn’t have shirts with high numbers. With a squad of 20 plus there would have been duplicate shirts for the photo call.
