I assume Playstation 4 and XBOX 720 are the logical successors to the current consoles, but does anyone who follows this kind of thing know if there will be any other competition in the next generation?

I quite miss the old Nintendo consoles, it's a shame they've gone much more hand-held and family-oriented nowadays rather than bringing out a proper console to rival the likes of PS and Xbox.

Also, if someone's PS3 happened to be broken, do you think its worth getting it fixed? or will these next ones be out relatively soon do you think?

So still quite a while then, bugger. Better see if I can get the PS3 fixed somehow.

wutnow?

It doesn't load discs at all, tries for ages, ejects it and inserts it again several times, then gives up.

Next winter is what I would assume we'll see ps4 and the 720 especially after the EA China leak about Battlefield 4 bound to release Oct 23 with 60 fps and 1080p + 64 player servers. Just a rumour still though but we'll certainly know after E3.

720 for the Xbox is not even a confirmed name yet though so have no idea what the final product will be called.

I've seen it called xbox8, I presume to go with windows 8. But I expect it will be 720, if only because that's what most people calling it already, and is therefore already in the subconscious.

Could be a bust blu ray diode. I lost a console to that. Common in the early models, symptoms include being fine with regular DVDs and (before it failed) taking increasing amounts of times to load games.

I can go uber geeky into what to expect from the next consoles but I'll try to give a summary of what the rumours are saying:

PS4

Uses an AMD A10 APU (APU = graphics and CPU combined into a single chip).

This chip's used in AMD's mid range laptops and budget gaming desktop. Produces nice graphics for the cost but it's no way a powerhouse. Used in a Console rather than a PC it will become much, much more powerful (direct access to HW rather than through windows is much much more efficient).

May also have a dedicated graphics card, allowing the graphics core in the APU to be dedicated to physics and dynamic animation (think in Uncharted 3 where drake would react to the running surface and place his hands on nearby walls to balance himself when running).

4gb of ram compared to the 512mb in current consoles. Larger levels, larger variety of enemies, more going on on screen, much higher resolution textures.

Xbox720 (not as much info leaked on the HW for this)

Windows 8

More advanced Kinect that's actually able to read your fingers (as was promised with the original but never happened), more CPU power to do advanced things with kinect.

Also using an AMD APU, probably will be less powerful than the PS4

For both consoles an unveiling is probably unlikely at E3. They'll hold their own events sometime before (they both get more press coverage than if they had conferences less than a day apart).

Anyone knows if the games for these new consols will work on the old ones? For instance, if Fifa 14 will come to the Xbox 720 (or whatever it will be called) will it also work on the 360?

Would think so as old xbox games for on the 360, same goes for ps3

I hope you're right. Will probably buy a 360 soon and it would be a shame if I couldn't use it for future games.

I'm 99% sure that Xbox 720 games (or whatever it's called) won't play on an Xbox 360, otherwise what's the point of the new console...

Not sure of the truth in it, but I heard you will no longer be able to use 2nd hand games on the next playstation. So you get the game and its only licensed to your console (like windows or any OS)

Whether that actually happens is anyone's guess!

I heard that was going to be the case with Mass Effect 3 because EA didn't want keys used by multiple people.

Worked fine for me though when I bought mine 2nd hand.

It would be very disappointed if they did implement something like that, but not particular surprised. It's been known for a long time that these companies are getting annoyed with 2nd hand retailers, since they can't make any money out of people selling and buying used games. If they do do it though, I can see a lot of people switching to different consoles, or just not buying them any more and getting them all on the "black market" so to speak.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm worried that all the servers for the old games will be shut down when the next console's come out and i won't be able to unlock the online achievements for my 360. I'm an achievement loser and i would probably cry if this happened.

80% said the xbox was easier to work with?

The consoles are largely the same tech! The PS4 has slightly better graphics and a GPGPU, the 720 has more RAM.

Anyway, it looks like we could have unveilings for at least 1 of the new consoles before March. New rumours floating around that the Ps3 controller will get a redesign and feature a touch pad.

They're releasing GTA 6 for the current generations though aren't they? I've seen it on the PS3 shelf to be pre-ordered in GAME.

I bought a PS3 a few months back to play FIFA and bought a bunch of games for my girlfriend to play. I got all of the Assassin's Creed games, all of the Uncharted games, Oblivion and a few more. She has played Oblivion heaps 'cause she loved Skyrim on PC, but has hardly even looked at the others. However, she still spends hours playing Nintendo64 - Banjo Kazooie, Pokemon Snap, Yoshi, Goldeneye etc.

The consoles may be similar in terms of power, but architecturally they couldn't be more different. The PS3 cell architecture is why so many developers hate working on the console and most games perform worse on the PS3 even though based purely on specs you'd probably expect it to look slightly better. The 360 is so much more straightforward, it's just like developing for a less powerful PC. This familiarity allows developers to push the 360 to its limits in terms of graphical fidelity.

It also allowed the indie games to be much easier to build using the developers kits I seem to remember reading somewhere,

If rumour is to be believed, the PS4 will be cheaper than the Xbox 720.

The PS4 will also abandon the traditional dualshock controller used for the last 16 years and may integrate a LCD Touchscreen similar to that found on the PS Vita.

(I'm on Playstation for what it is worth, been playing them since the PS1 so a good 15 years I've played them).

Expecting the new xbox dashboard to be just like windows 8 in a way, really like that design on my phone and the current x360 dash is pretty similar.

Skype is the best thing yet I've seen so far though, will be great to use that as voice chat and should improve the quality a lot. Don't expect any changes controller wise though, maybe some slight tweaks but overall its way too popular for them to f**k about with it.

If PS4 went with the whole touchscreen thing I think they will have shot themselves in the foot, cant see that being popular with gamers who play console? massive screen in the middle + more technical problems to worry about.

Right now I can controll my whole xbox with my Lumia 920 via the smartglass app, could be an option for PS as well.

7 years now since this generations consoles came out, will be fun to see the new ones at E3 finally - but im going with the xbox again!
