Next generation consoles

Featured Replies

We aren't seeing the most of what the new consoles do just yet because some of the games you mentioned like FIFA and Battlefield are just ports of the current gen games.

I believe Ryse was originally going to be a 360 game but they decided to bring it out on the Xbox One instead as well.

Lots of talk this past week about games such as the new COD not running at as high a graphic standard on the new Xbox as the PS4 which is interesting.

I won't be able to afford a new console on release but plan on picking up a PS5 within the next 6 months.

Cheers dude. Dead Rising looks like a brilliant game.

Anyone had a delivery date from Game yet? I ordered on phase 3 but havent heard anything yet.

I haven't seen anything from the new xbox one that makes me think 'wow I need this!!!!'

A few years ago I had next to no interest in buying an xbox 360....that is until I saw Gears of war 1 at a friends. The all new concept of the running, cool camera angle and the sweet graphics (at the time!) were such a step up from the original Xbox. I was amazed! I ended up playing it a lot for a few years before selling it.

I think the likes of Call of Duty have pushed the boundaries and it's going to be hard to get the wow factor for me this time round.

I do want one, eventually though.....when they are much cheaper....more so for the sky app that I can download and watch sky sports through, and all the other extras.

Hopefully when I see it in the flesh there are a few games that blow me away. I've watched a few videos on youtube of shooters and just think 'meh', it just looks like an xbox 360 game!

The funny thing is Gears of war 1 made me buy an xbox 360 as well. I thought it was so cool that you could play all your mates online. And i was at the inlaws house watching my brother inlaw play it with mates from his work.

I went out and got one a couple of days later.

Xbox now have to think of something really special to get me to get the new one. I already have a 360 and lots of games for it so it will have to be something amazing for me to get a new one which i cant play my old favs like L4D or Dead island on.

Well, i've done it.

Spent £492 on pre-ordering a PS4 + Assassins Creed IV + FIFA 14 + Battlefield 4.

I've never owned a Sony console, but they are cheaper than the Xbox this time round and it's a more powerful machine.

Come end of the month, it's good bye life!

Fair play to you Blueblur, a lot to shell out, but a few years investment I suppose. Its a big move going from Xbox to PS4, wont Xbox be a more powerful machine long term?

I am going to get an xbox likely, as I have had the previous two, I prefer the controller and all my mates have one. But I'll only consider one after the second generation is out. If its anything like the 360 there will be electronics issues, bugs etc with the first released version.

Second gen is always better. and cheaper!

I wont buy it until its £300 or under.

You make a good point Zola. I don't think i've ever bought a console on launch before. My previous consoles: N64, Gamecube, Wii, Xbox 360 have all been bought a year or two after launch. I hope there aren't any teething problems!

I would have bought the new Xbox, but cost was a factor, and the fact that more of my friends are on Playstation. I don't think you'll see a price drop for the whole of 2014, so you'll be waiting a bit I think!

I'm VERY excited to play Assassins Creed: Black Flag. It looks a lot better than AC: III, and I LOVE anything to do with pirates. The Caribbean setting looks beautiful, being able to hunt wales and explore coves.

And of course, FIFA 14 :)

I cant say i have given much thought about the new consoles coming out. A couple of my mates have pre ordered the new xbox but im in no rush as i still have loads of xbox 360 games to work through at home. Until either the price drops or a game comes out that i just have to play then i dont think i will bother.

I have an xbox 360 and had a PS3. The xbox is miles better in every way so i sold the Ps3. However i may be tempted when i do look to get a new console to get the Ps4.

What makes you say that?

All the specs are more powerful in the PS4.

New console releases used to be a real highlight during the year, but I just don't have the same enthusiasm as I did when I was younger. No console release will ever beat the N64.

Although I'll most likely end up buying the Xbox One in a few months once Watchdogs comes out.

Is the hardware better for everything? I know there was some controversy over COD not being played at 1080p natively on xbox, but it will be on PS4.

I always thought Xbox live offers more with a better user interface etc, but who knows what the PS4 will be like this time round.

The problem with COD and Battlefield 4 is they are being ported over from the current gen to the new ones and so for example with the new COD it runs at 1080p native on the PS4 but apparently has some frame rate issues whereas on the Xbox it is being upscaled from 720p and so on larger high def TV's the picture quality isn't as good.

What I assume will happen is that the games being made specifically for the new consoles such as Killzone and Forza are going to look a better.

The Xbox games at present are not being announced as running (mostly) at 1080p which is surprising considering they are a new gen.

Previous Microsoft was saying that cloud technology would play a part in the games running better and looking better but having now reversed their always online policy games are going to have to run without the cloud (all very confusing).

Watchdogs will be a day one purchase for me when it comes out!

I've been following its development very closely, the game looks like a riot, being able to hack into things, including traffic lights, CCTV, peoples' bank accounts.

I think the thinking is if MS can actually make use of this cloud processing thing then the Xbox one can be incredibly powerful. Big if though.

But because they have reversed the always online they can no longer fall back on the cloud because they're are essentially now saying they console will function offline (without cloud).

So unless they manage to sell games with a massive disclaimer that says "this will only work if connected to the internet" the way I see it they've hindered themselves.

I may be reading it wrong, but I think not connecting to the cloud won't stop you playing a game but being connected will massively improve games. The only one using it now is forza to give better opposing drivers. It could be a brilliant idea if done right.

Plus, I would expect the majority of gamers to be connected to the net whenever playing a game now. I know my 360 has been connected since I got it.

Had a text today from Game to say that PS4 is coming soon. Proper excited for it. A guy in game said that phase 3 of the pre-orders should be here 1st Dec.

Disappointed that Watchdogs has been delayed until spring. Going to have to change my preorder. I'm not really a FIFA man, much rather play PES but not ssure I can last until Sept 2014.

Thought this was a good article comparing the basics.

Its interesting now that ps4 online has to be bought, same as xbox. Also for tbose saying ps4 is cbeaper ot was interesting to know the playstation eye os not included. ..the question is how much will this be?

All in all the price probably ends up very similar.

I had an Xbox 360 which died and I replaced for a PS3. Gotta say, I missed the 360 ever since so it'll be the Xbox One for me this time.

However, I also want the iPhone 5s, and the iPad air, and a new iMac too... I also need to pay off the small loan I took to buy my new car...

Looks like I'll be waiting a while. Watchdogs look awesome by the way. Reminds me of a cross between GTA and Splinter Cell.
