April 15, 201511 yr Wasn't sure whether to post this in the Fabregas or Oscar thread but I've plumped for this one. I do think our midfield is flawed and I do think Oscar is being asked to work too hard. What do you guys think .. ? http://weaintgotnohistory.sbnation.com/2015/4/1/8218679/oscar-and-fabregas-chemistry-masks-one-major-fault-in-our-midfield I think we need better footballers in our team. not better athletes id say we only have 1 CM whos a great passer of the ball, and thats fabregas. if we look at the whole midfield then theres hazard as well. we struggle to keep the ball under pressure because too many of our midfielders have either a poor first touch or are poor at passing the ball, while some of them are bad at both
April 16, 201511 yr I'm not sure if i've misread that article, but is it calling for us to drop Fabregas and play someone more physical to get the most out of Oscar?I'd much sooner drop Oscar and move Fabregas up to accommodate someone.
April 16, 201511 yr http://bleacherreport.com/tb/dgqL7?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=chelsea "Stats Show Jose Mourinho Got it Wrong by Selling Juan Mata to Replace Him With Oscar" My main counter argument would be... We're going to win the league in our first full season without Mata.
April 16, 201511 yr That doesn't really prove anything - there is no context and it fails to take into account the role they play in the team. It also conveniently ignores defensive stats and our improved position in the league, or the fact that our defence as a whole is markedly better since Mata ceased to be a consistent starter. Mata is now playing as something of an inside forward who drifts inside for Man Utd and is also a primary creator for Man Utd as well as an outlet. Oscar is an attacking midfielder who tends to drift left (although I imagine that will have more to do with the fact that Hazard plays there rather than a natural tendency to do so). In terms of playing a role as our creator or outlet, he is second fiddle to Fabregas and Hazard respectively. It's probably also worth bearing in mind that Man Utd play a more possession-focused game than we do, so Mata will naturally play more passes and spend more time on the ball. As a wide man he gets far more space than Oscar in the middle, which would explain (at least to some extent) his superior dribbling stats. In short, those stats prove nothing, especially not that Mourinho 'got it wrong'.
April 16, 201511 yr % of games played in they have won since then? Number of tackles/interceptions/duels won?
April 16, 201511 yr I think arguing that we are going to win the league with Oscar and didn't with Mata is a flawed argument, (as well as being premature and tempting fate!!) It is ignoring the fact that Mata didn't get a chance to play with Costa & Matic, who everyone agrees make us a lot stronger and more difficult to beat. Of course, we possibly only signed these players because of the sale of Mata & Luiz and had funds available. But I would still argue with the right set-up and players around him, Mata would have helped us win the league. Hopefully we will win the league and if we do, every player will have played their part but IMO, Oscar's contribution will have been significantly less than many others. This all comes back down to Jose's cautious approach and having players who will do a job and not playing too many "flair" players in the same side but if given the choice, I would still take Mata over Oscar every day of the week. The beauty of Oscar isn't just what he does with the ball, but that he's able to cover for other players. Watch how many times earlier in the season he'd drop back and let Fabregas either bring the ball forward or alternate in that role. See how many times he'll drift out to the left so Hazard can come inside or get back and defend. Is anther playmaker needed when you have Hazard and Fabregas as your two primary playmakers, or do you need someone to link the play? Those days of the week when you choose Mata over Oscar - are you going to ask Hazard to do even more defensive work so we can get the best out of Mata? Or do you want the best player in the league to have more freedom?
April 16, 201511 yr So what makes Oscar good is that he lets other players do his job and then he sits back waiting for them to create something? He is basically Mikel then

Or do you want the best player in the league to have more freedom? I read an article on Hazard recently and he mentioned how much he enjoyed playing with Mata and how he misses him. And I think THAT'S what we are missing. At times their link-up play and understanding of one another was superb. Sure, it does still happen with Hazard, Fab and Oscar (At Times) but I think Hazard and Mata were made to play with one another and with say, Matic and Pogba (or another) behind them we could have destroyed teams rather than try and see out games 1-0.

Can't deny that, Mata and Hazard were beautiful to watch sometimes. Wouldn't mind seeing Eidur in this team either... I guess we'll never know.
April 16, 201511 yr That is a very fatuous way of not recognising that Oscar's job might extend beyond creating chances... I recognize that it does, I just dont think its a job that requires much anility or skill and something thats very easy to replace if need be. Ability to make inxisive passes, ball retention, texhnique and creativity on the other hand are not
April 16, 201511 yr "I'm very happy here," he said. "I get along with everyone, and the club shows its praise towards me. Chelsea is one of the best clubs in the world, so I don't see why I would think of leaving. "I'm very happy with Chelsea's season so far and happy with my own performance as well, but I do think I could have contributed more to the team. April 16, 201511 yr Cant slip a fag paper between Oscar & Mata imo Mata was flogged because of FFP (not tracking back etc. bit of a smoke screen) , would of been wonderful to keep them both But Matic & Fabergas brought in with the Mata dosh, team looking like strong contenders Hope Oscar stays

April 17, 201511 yr If we cared about FFP, we would have recalled one of the loanees instead of signing Cuadrado for 25mil. Exactly, we let 2 guys go, and bought another guy for 25M to sit on the bench. We could have let 1 guy on loan, and the other one have more match time, and save the money for better use next season.

We could have let 1 guy on loan, and the other one have more match time, and save the money for better use next season. The 25M sit on the bench because Willian suddenly play much better since we bought Cuadrado. If Schurler is still here, maybe that will not happen. Just saying
April 17, 201511 yr Jose on Oscar in today's press conference and whether he will be staying: "Of course. He just signed a contract a few months ago and is one of the players with long-term contracts. "He is 23 years old, in the best period of his career - obviously we don't want to sell."

April 17, 201511 yr sounds like the usual stuff jose says when asked a similar question True, he's hardly going to say "Cooor blimey, can't wait to offload him, what a lightweight. We're getting Rues in summer which is going to be great". But that said, the fact is Oscar has signed a 5 year deal with Jose at the club so it would seem strange for us to look to move him on so soon after signing the new contract.
April 17, 201511 yr I have full faith in Oscar, he'd do wonders next season. untill January at least.
April 17, 201511 yr Yeah but... Pogba innit. We can hope for him, shame we can't get him and keep Oscar
