Why have we never produced or bought a prolific goalscorer?

Featured Replies

Out of all the strikers that we've had over the years, we've never had a Thierry Henry (Arsenal prime), Van Persie (Arsenal & Man Utd prime), Van Nistelrooy (Man Utd prime) etc. I suppose you could even add Cristiano Ronaldo (while at Man Utd) to the mix as well.

We have never had that prolific goalscorer. Every time we've bought a guy, e.g. Crespo and Shevchenko, they've always been outside their prime. Why can we never get a pure striker (who is in his prime) who will score 20+ goals a season for us?

Every heard of Didier Drogba?

Big man, big game player. ALWAYS came through for us when it mattered. And who can forget the final kick of the game on May 19th 2012!

Drogba was not prolific?

Not really, only managed 20+ goals in two of his 8 seasons at the club (20 in 06/07 and then of course the mightily impressive 29 in our double winning year under Carlo)

Because we spread out our goals and don't rely on one player to carry us. Would you rather we be like Tottenham(Bale) or Arsenal(Van Persie)?

Or why can't we be like Utd and have a spread of goalscorers AND a 20+ goalscorer a season

United have a perfected system that has been built through years and years of stability. It's not as easy as it looks to have a spread of goalscorers contributing regularly and get a prolific striker scoring tonnes at the same time. Even Barcelona/Real Madrid can't manage it.

Did they really have a spread of goalscorers this season?

RvP 30

Hernández 18

Rooney 16

It is if you buy the right players. United have played with two strikers for years, and usually at least one of the two is a world class striker and is a prolific goalscorer.

What do you mean Barca and Real can't manage it? They have prolific scorers in Messi and Ronaldo and then have significant goal contributors in players like Fabregas, Villa, Alexis, Pedro and then Ozil, Di Maria, Higuain and Benzema in Real's case.

We've got a great spread but need that player up top who can score 20 in the league with ease.

You are telling me that if you removed Messi and Ronaldo from the sides that the rest of the players would score regularly? The majority of the assists and creativity come from these 2 players. And not mentioning they score like 40-60 goals a season each. Who is going to compensate for those goals? Fabregas, Pedro, Di Maria? Doubt it.

Of course they won't, but taking away any side's best player will have a drastic effect on productivity and in this case it happens to be the best two players on the planet that we're talking about.

Not really. He scored some important goals, but he was never an Henry, Ronaldo, Van Persie or Van Nistelrooy who could regularly score 20+ goals a season and would change a game almost every time they played. I guess if you look at La Liga they have Falcao for Madrid, Messi for Barca, even Raul and (fat) Ronaldo for R.Madrid when they played a few years back in their primes too. We have just never had that one guy who can constantly change games, is super dangerous and prolific.

That's what I'm saying. We have never really had that one player who can score that amount of goals or is super dangerous in front of goal. Someone who you just have confidence will score 99% of the time they are in front of goal.

Drogba was prolific on his day, he has the highest goals to game ratio in Premier league history for one particular season ( 2009/2010)season. The problem is that he spent the first two years getting settled and after his first prolific season(06/07) he found himself in and out of the team with quite a bit of injuries. After the 09/10 season he caught Malaria and was never really the same player after that.
