The John Obi Mikel Goal Scoring Thread

Featured Replies

Mikel is much better than Matic and has comfortably outplayed him this season. Matic will never have the sort of composure and intelligence Mikel possesses.

Matic was impressive alongside Luiz in his debut season and his form has nosedived ever since then. People blamed Cesc and everyone imaginable but no matter who he was paired with he was terrible. One of the most overrated Chelsea players of all time. He's just as erratic as the numerous scapegoats we've had play for us. Mikel played the game of his life in Munich and the Nou Camp while Matic was bossed by 10 man PSG and delivered one of the most gutless midfield performances in Chelsea history.

I agree that right now Matic is pretty awful, but last season he was brilliant at times.

The negativity here about a player that has been here for almost a decade while many managers has come and gone is much.

Mikel is obviously one of the most underrated player in history

I'll agree that Mikel must be a super-intelligent man to continue to get paid millions of quid a year to walk around the pitch and do nothing.

I'm not a massive Mikel fan but even I would say that's Harsh!!!

He really isn't though.

Tip my cap to him for staying at Chelsea but then again Phil Neville spent 10 years at Manchester United.

Was it through loyalty or knowing he was an average player at one of the world's biggest clubs?

Phil Neville might just be sir Alex type of player. But do you know how many manager we have had since 2005? Non of them viewed Mikel as an average player. That's why non of terminated his contract or cash in on him. So if you are among the Mikel haters, you will have to endure 2 or 3 more years before you can see a Chelsea team without Mikel because BLUE BLOOD flows in his veins.

Just offering another perspective.

What if it's because no one wants to make a bid for him or talks broke down due to the price?

Preposterous, Mikel is the 2nd coming of Jesus don't you know.

The most fearsome and underrated player to ever play the game.

Clubs are falling over themselves to enlist the services of our genius... Thankfully, despite the many managerial changes we've been able to resist their advances.

I think his point is if he is so bad that he couldn't contribute anything as some were suggesting he would have been Marko Marin'd rather than being kept in the first team squad playing over 330 appearances for the club under multiple managers.

He is at minimum a decent player, he wouldn't have got this far in his career if he wasn't.

No his original point was:

"Mikel is obviously one of the most underrated player in history"

Which is possibly one of the most sensationalist things said about Mikel, good or bad.

And that's saying something.

I'd like to see Mikel take a position further up the field. I'd see how he fares sitting just behind the striker. He's a good player to slide a ball  through or hold it up and turn it around for the wingers or the forward. He was always an AM.

I think he is underrated but yeah that's a bit much as you can't really be described Mikel as anything better than good, decent or solid.
I should probably edit my post to say the unsensationalised version of his point then. I do think people are overly critical of Mikel though but I understand their frustrations, we could have better players or youngsters in his squad place but that doesn't make him a bad player, just maybe not the right player for the squad depending on your preference.

Sarcasm, if done, should be done well.  Done badly, it just makes you look a prick.  Your attempt was done badly.  I'll say no more.

This, sort of, I think.  It's my view that he performs a very specific role defined for him by the manager, and he does that very well.  Sadly, a lot of people don't see that, don't approve of the role that he is being asked to play, so slag the lad off. I'd trust Jose that if he decides Mikel has a role to perform, 1) That role is important, and 2) Mikel performs that role at least satisfactorily as far as Jose is concerned.

I think you're mistaking Mikel with Yaya Toure.  :laugh2:

.

Yorky mate, you're a long term poster so you obviously get some leniency round here but don't call me a prick just because you disagree with me.

Throwing out petty name calling just ain't called for, I'll say no more.

The sort of potential Mikel had before he came to Chelsea, if Jose never converted him to a defensive midfielder he would have far more better than Yaya Toure. If you doubt it, go and watch the video of the 2005 under 21 World cup where he ended up as the second best player after Messi

That is a tired, old, and unprovable argument.
