Diego Costa to Chelsea

Featured Replies

I'm beginning to suspect the reason nothing is being officially announced is due to FFP accounting.

David Luiz is still a Chelsea player despite everything being done weeks ago. All parties say Rakitic to Barca is done but won't be confirmed until after the WC.

It's the only thing that makes sense.

That, and the transfer window isn't open yet.

I don't think FFP comes into it, the transfer won't be official until the window opens, and any fee will still go on next season's books. As the FFP year has already ended.

Wouldn't worry about announcements until after the world cup.

I do worry Atletico have an agenda however they can't get anymore for him as his buyout clause is £32 million which we have met.

They might be holding out for Monaco, PSG, Manchester United, or another club like that to throw in a bigger bid.

are you an imbecile?

why would they 'throw in' a bigger bid if theres a 32m buyout clause?

Wow....no need for the insult.

It's simple, really. If you want the player, you bid more than the other team regardless of the buyout clause.

I always thought that the buyout clause amount was the owning clubs 'floor' valuation. If you value the asset higher and feel it would increase your chances of ownership then why is paying more a waste?

I don't think you're understanding the point of a buyout clause, once the buyout is met the patent club HAVE to accept.

Placing a bid higher than the buyout would achieve literally nothing.

Dont quit your day job

I thought that matching/exceeding the bid allowed the player to agree a verbal contract nothing more. The clubs will still have to negotiate a full buyout fee.

Perhaps I should rethink my chosen career as a sports agent...

A buy clause clause is a set fee a player can pay their club to become a free agent.

Usually teams will except offers from bidding clubs that meet the same amount as the buy out clause.

If the selling club didn't want to play ball, the buying club would have to pay the player the buy out clause fee PLUS the addition tax the player would then incur.

Just because the buyout clause was met, does not guarantee the club that met the buyout clause in getting the player. Perhaps it is Costa who is holding out for more money? If he waits and has an amazing WC then other clubs can too meet the buyout clause and offer the player more money than Chelsea is. The buyout clause guarantees the club that is losing the player the money, that is it. The player still needs to agree to terms with the club meeting the buyout clause.

Not sure why this is so difficult to grasp but insulting someone certainly doesn't help the cause.

And no, I will keep my day job! I like what I do professionally and frankly have no clue what goes on in the back offices of professional football clubs. Apparently you do though...

Gem Explained it best and it's not that obvious.

It seems that once the buyout clause is met the bidding is driven by the players preference. The winning club will meet the buyout clause but will also have to pay more for the player than any other club.

So Manu could meet the buyout and offer more to costa and he would likely direct the club to accept the Manu bid. I am assuming that athletico have to do as instructed by costa if two clubs meet the buyout clause?

Also, the buyout clause only legally applies for Spanish clubs and not foreign clubs. Hence why the club would pay the player to buyout his own contract. The player would have to pay local taxes if he opts to buyout his contract, so it's better to discuss the transfer with the club.

Sports Illustrated did a decent piece on the dealings during the Aguero transfer saga : http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/sid_lowe/01/29/atletico.buyouts/

Yes. Spanish clubs use buyout-clauses. They set an amount to a player, usually higher than their market value. If the given player wants to buyout his contract he needs to meet the sum to buyout his contract.

Naturally it is better to negotiate with the club as Plavi26 suggests as the sum usually is higher than the market value. In Cesc's case I think Chelsea should negotiate with Barca. He clearly wants out and Barca wants him out.

At the moment if the reports are right Barcelona FC is a passenger in the negotiations, they watch the dealings from the side and talk mainly to Cesc and his agent while we talk mainly to Cesc.

I still think we are far away from signing him. Still think he is going to ManU. He smells more like a ManU player to me.

No need for such senseless insults, try and add to a discussion without inane posts please. Thank you.

Suarez had a buyout clause, this was initially reported by the media, and much later confirmed by Liverpool. Arsenal tried to be cute by going £1 over the figure.

Henry was insulted and refused to sell.

In short, buy out clauses really mean jack sh*t.

I actually don't think the suarez clause was the same, I got the impression their was a gentlemans agreement say he could speak to a champions league club if they bid over 40m.

I wouldnt say they mean jack sh*t, in spain they are written into every contract by law. Even over here we signed ba from Newcastle for just the 8m because of his contract.

Arsenal were misinformed about the Suarez clause, they thought it was a £40m buyout clause but it turned out that it was if Liverpool received a bid above £40m they were contractually obliged to make Suarez aware of the bid, however they did not have to accept.
