Aaron Cresswell

Been very impressed whenever I've seen him play but the cost would probably be a little prohibitive and we have Azpi and Luis to keep us going until DaSilva comes through.

As for Bertrand, he played over 250 first-team games during 9 loans, as well as over 50 games for us and he didn't do enough to stake a claim even right up to his loan spell at Villa. We were more than patient with him.

I've seen this guy a lot this season & he is ready for the step up! Honestly believe if he was with a fashionable club... He'd be in the England set up.

He is far better than Gibbs. Offers more defensively than Baines and is a mile better than Danny Rose. Would like to see him BLUE!!

I saw him during Leicester's 2-1 win against West Ham, he was good enough in the first half that Mahrez got hooked at half-time, but fared less well against Albrighton, who preferred to cross from deep rather than cut inside and accelerate past him. I think he's a decent defensive full-back, reads the game well but probably not the best suited to a diamond; if the club are genuinely targeting him I think it is quite clearly as a like-for-like (albeit left-footed) backup to Azpilicueta. Then again, this is the kind of rumour which could well have been constructed from the ideas that Luis might want to leave and that Chelsea need to replenish their stocks of homegrown players, neither of which are necessarily true.

I think he was unfortunate to come to the Premier League when he did as he could well play for a side in the top six; Man Utd have just signed Shaw, Rojo and Blind and are therefore well-stocked in terms of left backs, Liverpool have just signed Moreno and Southampton have just signed Bertrand. That said, I'd probably want to see him for more than a season in the top flight before making a final judgement; bear in mind he has been playing next to the excellent Winston Reid all season and with Alex Song sweeping up in front of him. I have to wonder whether he would shine as brightly in a team playing a more possession-focused game.

Bertrand repeatedly stated that he wanted to play at a club where he would be a regular starter. When Azpilicueta replaced Cole as our first-choice left back it became abundantly clear that Chelsea wouldn't be that club. Fair play to him though, he's done really well at Southampton.

What a silly signing that would be. Getting rid of Bertrand just to sign someone inferior and with less experience.

I agree, i also don't think he is very good. I wouldn't be surprised if this rumour started just because he scored a good freekick against Stoke.

1. Not needed have Dave and Luis.

2. Would be expensive, English surcharge cost plus.

3. would be blocking our home grown youth.

Why bother when we already have Dave and Luis?

Luis has started less than 20 matches this season so if there was an offer on the table to get our money back then Cresswell could probably take his spot in the squad.

So we could swap Luis for someone worse? Whats the point?

Money. Luis will be our sixth most expensive player on the FFP books next season (as things currently stand) so it'd be a case of recouping part of the initial outlay and having a cheaper, English alternative.

If this was the case we would have kept Betrand and not spent nearly £20 million on Luis.

Clearly Jose has other plans.

Bertrand wanted to leave, wasn't good enough and brought in £10 million. Maybe the plan was to have Luis become number one but that hasn't happened, so things may change.

He's better than Cresswell and was last season too.

Everything points to this not happening.

I doubt it will happen but I don't think Bertrand has ever shown he was good enough, going right back to his younger days of any of the 200 matches he played either here or on-loan, but that's a whole other point.

The point is that Luis costs too much in a FFP world and a cheaper option may be preferable, but he'll probably stick around for two more years.

He might not have been good enough to be a first place option over Azpi but he was more than good enough as back up, he has proved he's a very good EPL left back in the past few seasons. He didn't once let us down when called upon either if I recall.

In Regards to Luis now ....he doesn't cost too much when you consider we have just signed off on a record sponosrship deal and are now getting a record amount of revenue through TV money.

FFP means far less than what it meant last season, we are in a fantastic position and quite clearly don't need to sell anyone and the wage structure will be much, MUCH healthier without the likes of Torres and Lampard on the books who were on a small fortune.

The argument for Luis is that he doesn't cost much in the context of flogging Bertrand and letting Cole go, which is actually a good point someone made on here a while back. That means he's probably cost-effective to keep for the duration of his contract.

As for Bertrand, there was never a moment that he looked anything more than average for us and that was true right up until his loan at Villa. He's looked good this season at times but I don't think he'll ever be missed and the plan is more than likely to develop Jay DaSilva long-term.

£20m bid enough for Chelsea to secure Filipe Luis replacement

CHELSEA can sign West Ham star Aaron Cresswell this summer if they make a bid of £20million, according to reports.

The former Ipswich left-back has been in top form under Sam Allardyce at Upton Park, and has been linked with a move to west London at the end of the current campaign.

Filipe Luis has become the forgotten man at Stamford Bridge, with Atletico Madrid believed to be interested in bringing him back to La Liga.

And the Daily Mail claims that Chelsea are looking to land Cresswell as a replacement for the Brazilian in a move which would help the club boost its quota of English players.

West Ham are apparently hoping to keep 25-year-old, but will sell if Jose Mourinho offers £20m for his signature.

£20m! For 25 year old with no European or International experience? Only a f**king Englishman would be valued at that amount.

Jesus wept.

It actually makes sense financially and in terms of squad make-up.

Filipe Luis is on a 3 year deal which has a FFP book price of £9 million in each of the next two seasons. That makes him the sixth most expensive player at the club.

Cresswell on a five year deal with £50,000 p/w wages would mean he costs about £6.5 million each year, saving us £2.5 million per season and giving us one more foreign spot in the squad. Plus you get whatever you make from selling Luis (at a guess £8-10 million, possibly more).

So there's an argument in favour of doing this.

Regardless of how it pans out in FFP terms it's still ridiculous that a player with no experience outside of just trying to stay in the division would be valued (according to the report) near to £20m.

We paid £21m for Matic, one of the most sought after holding midfield players in Europe at the time. Zouma only cost us £12m, Dave was £7m.

I just don't see in what world Aaron Cresswell should become our 2nd all time most expensive defender. The premium on English players is shocking and the homegrown rule is counter intuitive to FFP.
