FIFA Officials Arrested

Featured Replies

So Blatter says he can't be held responsible for things happening within his organisation...... Erm isn't that his job?

If Blatter had been the Captain of the Titanic it would have been a fair bet that he would have been the first man on a life boat ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, of course he is responsibl, it happened on his watch, end of story.

Hopefully we get to see Golem Sr lose his precious in real life

Well, by definition of them looking into FIFA they must be looking into UEFA.

I'm not sure why you think UEFA are corrupt - not a single FIFA delegate arrested was a UEFA member.

The problem with FIFA is that it's an organisation, now, where every country has the same power. So Blatter can get by without caring what UEFA think of him as long as he has enough minor Asian and African countries on his side.

Michael-Ballack-Tom-Henni-001.jpg

I don't agree with that. Why does the Papau New Guinea FA have the same voting rights as the Spanish FA ? One represents 10 clubs, the other represents 1000's.

There should be something closer to a tiered system where the larger FAs have a bigger vote. Otherwise, by representation, it becomes unfair.

Also - why would you ban a country from the sport just because the representative of that country , on the FIFA stage only, is accepting bribes and committing fraud by doing so ?

Democracy.

Giving the larger FA's a bigger say will skewer things in their favor, ignoring the smaller FA's in the process. The system we have at the moment gives the small nations a voice and gives them equal amount of money, some of who rely on that money completely to fund things like grassroots football. This has actually been one of the good things Blatter has done during his time in power, I wouldn't change it at all.

There is no perfect voting system and they are all open to being exploited but, one vote for each country is the least bad option. Instead of focusing on the system, I would rather focus dealing with those who exploit it and making sure practices are put in place to prevent it.

You are right.....

but today we're going to see a vote where every African nation is going to vote for Blatter. Equatorial Guinea is going to have the same voting right as the English Football Association.

Now I'm sure there's some who will throw words like Colonialism around on hearing me say that, but when an organisation as corrupt as FIFA is somehow getting every African country's vote something just doesn't sit right with me.

I see Sepp is making his presedential speech right now.  It's so sad it's almost funny:

Sepp Blatter: "My address will be different than before. I will address what has happened and look at how we can go forward.

"We are going through troubled times, events that have thrown a shadow across Fifa and Congress. Lets try to lift that shadow and our spirits.

"We cannot let the reputation of Fifa get dragged through the mud. Individuals are responsible for this, not the entire organisation."

Sepp Blatter: "It is not good for all this to come out two days before the presidential election. I am not going to use the word "coincidence" but I do have a question mark over it. This brings responsibility and needs action across all levels."

Democracy.

Considering its a global body I think the more appropriate system would be to give more power to those who...well have more power, just like the UN does.

BBC said this morning Blatter is expected to win by a landslide.

Ignoring everything else going on right now the fact that an 80 year old dinosaur is supposedly the best candidate to head up the most popular sport in the world is just depressing.

Because he bribes tiny nations' FAs. It's why I think UEFA should just walk away from it and we'll somehow cope with the Champions League and an expanded European Championships with invitations for Brazil, Argentina and any other nation who hasn't voted for Blatter.

The idea that Timor-Leste has as much of a say in this voting process as us or Germany is an absolute farce.

To be fair its not like he has any outstanding competitors, I know little to nothing about the only other candidate other than that he is the prince of Jordan? What makes him qualified to be the head of FIFA? What experience does he have in football or football administration?

A Jordanian prince doesn't exactly scream legitimacy or transparency either.

It's a shame Figo dropped out.

It just amazes me that something that is in the public eye daily is corrupt to the extension that it is basically common knowledge (no one was actually surprised by these arrests were they?) and yet nothing is seemingly done to address this.

How Blatter has more or less stood unopposed for 5 terms (since 1998) is ridiculous.

Without meaning to sound ageist but at 79 is he really the best man to heading up the organisation that oversees the most watched sport in the world?

He is the totem of everything bad and wrong with the sport.

Could UEFA break away? Possibly and to be honest I think they could. I'm not much of a fan of international football anyway so the loss of a tournament played once every 4 years would be no real loss to me personally if it meant that UEFA/Platini was able to drive the game forward better in the sense if nothing else of being more open to the introduction of video replays, giving the goal line officials actual powers etc then I would be all for it.

But this is what I'm getting at, the corruption is so deeply rooted that a candidate who might actually be good for the sport (let's take Figo as an example) cannot get backing from the likes of Confederation of African Football because they're all on the take.

So regardless that Figo might actually want to make the sport more progressive it doesn't matter because the head of the Somali Football Federation has been promised a new pencil case if he keeps Blatter there.

I would like to see UEFA drop out of FIFA with immediate effect. That will force the sponsors to pull out too and will leave Blatters vision of football for the whole world in complete tatters.  He would be forced to resign pretty quickly afterwards and UEFA will soon get back in. Job done.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.

Looks as though Blatter will get re-elected, no?  How the f**k does this happen, when his cronies have all been arrested and it is all so blatantly corrupt?!  I really don't get it.  Apparently all except Europe will back him (BBC Sport).

To be fair there aren't exactly many outstanding candidates, are there!

If Blatter wins which by the looks of it can still very much happen then I think we will see a major backlash and FIFA will crumble. He will be forced to resign if UEFA and nations start to pull out of the tournaments. It maybe a blessing in disguise if he wins, who in their right mind would want to play in Qatar.

I hope Platinni has thought to himself..."we don't need Fifa", because we certainly do not need Fifa.

I would like to see Uefa pull all European teams from any further involvement in the WC as we know it.

Then completely smash Fifa into oblivion by starting a new tournament called Uefa World Cup.

No one nation should ever host the games again, it must be a global tournament in all forms, like Formula 1, that is how to really spread football to the corners of the planet.

It's important to understand why Blatter is extremely popular among a lot of countries.

He has expanded the World Cup in terms of number of teams participating from other confederations and has bought the World Cup outside of Europe and Latin America. That is something I will always appreciate him for.

Aside from this, he has been an absolute disaster.

Blatter has alluded that the arrests etc are due to sour grapes on the part of England and the USA for not being selected for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup Finals.

'They call into question the World Cups of 2018 and 2022. In December 2010 here in Zurich when we decided on the two World Cups in one session.

'If two other countries had emerged from the envelopes, we would not have these problems today. But we can’t go back in time, we are not prophets. We can’t say what would have happened.'
