In your opinion, why are we the most hated club in England?

Featured Replies

Generally just jealousy, and they use the Abramovich situation as their fuel for the argument. The way I view it is that the team that dominates generally is hated by the most people. People absolutely loathed everything about united under Ferguson when they won everything, now it's only really the proper rivals who absolutely despise Unifed because they've had a relatively poor two years.

Also people like to bring in the class argument which is utterly ridiculous to me. In modern football people seem to define class as the ordinary and the boring, hence why people like Pellegrini are hailed as classy men and Mourinho who says things that people will remember is viewed as a vile and horrible man

I think you're on the right track looking beyond simple jealousy. Jose is a very divisive bloke, as many opinionated, strong-minded and outspoken people are and we've taken on that image as a club. It's much easier to go through life being meek and looking to agree with others but that's not only dull, it's unexceptional. We as a club are exceptional and we don't apologise for that.

But at the same time I think we went through a period where we were easy to unlike around 2011-14. That was when we were hated most in my opinion and it wasn't just success but a series of things like sacking Ancelotti and then AVB and Robbie in fairly quick succession, Mikel accusing Clattenberg of racist comments but more than anything else I think the John Terry incident with Anton Ferdinand did massive damage to us as a club. It fed into an existing idea of some Chelsea supporters (which like it or not, isn't completely false), added to JT's resume of bad behaviour and put a massive bullseye on our back where anything became a major story.

I think there's still massive bad feeling from that but we're also rehabilitating our image...slowly. Still, when Costa does something on the pitch there's invariably going to be an overreaction but I think in much the same way JT has changed the narrative about himself by letting his football we've tried to do the same. But then you get the Paris incident which just sets us back a few steps.

Of course none of this would be so overblown if we weren't so successful now, but kudos to you for looking beyond the 'haters' and 'jealousy' arguments.

I'd rather us be hated with the impotent rage of a 1000 frustrated men than be completely ignored like Man City (they scored more goals than Liverpool last year, beat them to the title and somehow ended up being a footnote to the season) or patronized like Arsenal or laughed at like Liverpool. Of course there are reasons beyond jealousy as to why we are hated and those factors may take the hatred to an almost pathological level as observed in the case of the Arsenal and Liverpool fanbases, but success breeds contempt and there's not a thing you can do to change it. Just ask Manchester United. We are never going to be loved regardless of the way we play or who our manager or captain is.

Honestly, I like our role as the "villains" of football and Jose Mourinho as the charismatic, overconfident supervillain who, unlike in the movies, actually wins at the end. We may attract the most trolls, but Jose is the master of them all.

Excellent post. Saying things like haters will always hate is what you expect to see from a teenage girl on Facebook.

There are plenty of posts in this topic mine included that go well beyond the haters gonna hate posts. Yes there are a few of those and tbh they are also valid but read the whole topic and there's plenty that give more reasons to why we are hated.

We are not the most hated. Liverpool and Man U are easily the most hated, but any club with sustained success is likely to attract some hate. Football is just really tribal and there is a lot of subjectivity around many aspects of it, leading to situations where fans use all manners of warped and nitpicked morality and apply it to whatever suits their team's ambitions, including Chelsea fans.

Not for me, we seem to be the most hated club now in my opinion.

Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham loathe us with a passion. It's hilarious.

Liverpool hating us is hilarious, but not a traditional hatred, but mainly because we've been their achilles heel in recent years.

I think the perception of hatred is different, where you live

i get the feeling that the media are only making it seems that way because Roman never ever talks to them like other owners! also we might mistaken jealousy for hate because those other 'clubs''s fans wishes they had a real football fan owner who actually watches and appears at matches and not making money out of them!

I think there's little doubt that we are the most hated club at the moment, and the vitriol (propagated on the internet) is mostly led by Looserpool, Spuds and Arse fans whilst the rest just jump on the bandwagon.

The scouse scum and the sad gooners are just plain jealous, whereas the spuds have not forgiven us for denying them a place in the CL in 2012.
Add to that Jose's bullish attitude in defending the club (about time too imo) and of course Romans money and apparent refusal to get bored and leave us in the sh*t which everybody has been telling us would happen for the last ten years !

Anyways... who cares really, it makes the victories all the more sweeter

It's worth pointing out that we definitely get it worst with Jose at the helm.

He's a headline act, probably the most recognisable manager in world football - he brings the spotlight and demands the attention. As much as Sky and the other dominant media outlets want to portray the likes of Liverpool and Man Utd as the stars of our Premier League - he's one individual who can take all of that attention away - both on and off the park.

And in a footballing sense - we're probably the only big English club prepared to and capable of playing ugly to win. We don't cheat, we don't break any footballing rules, but we'll certainly adapt to stifle attacking teams, killing momentum, and dictating games without possession.

We're rarely the 'prettiest' team to watch, but we're almost always effective - and that's a frustrating thing to be on the receiving end of.

We always seem to have players who oppo fans despise as well.

JT for the race row and cheating allegations.

Ashley Cole for cheating on the nation's sweetheart repeatedly.

Drogba and Robben for their play acting.

Costa for constantly pushing, kicking or squaring up to other players.

Lampard for being fat apparently...

Some of a few I can think of...

But would they be as hated if they played for other clubs? They all have their fair share of players who do the same thing and don't get called up on it.

Really interested to see people's thoughts on this.

All seems to be centred around Abramovich's money, JT and Mourinho etc..

What do you think?

Simple, because leeds fecked off.

Seriously though, we are no where near the most hated club in england. Its hands down liverpool as all of united, Chelsea and everton fans hate them vehemently.

Unfortunately, Liverpool as most hated seems to be offset by the neutral none-football fans

Pah who cares what non-football fans think?

Just winds my up. The landlords mother was doing the bar in one of my favourite pubs while I was watching us on TV.

Overheard her: "I hope the other lot win, I hate Chelsea".

I know this goes with the territory, when a club has success, but I felt like saying "STFU, you know nothing about football"

The whole Chelsea - Liverpool mutual hatred might be fairly new but I think it now eclipses any of the traditional rivalries in terms of pure unadulterated loathing. The dippers really, REALLY hate us with a seething passion, which is incredibly entertaining. Even the old Liverpool - Man Utd rivalry doesn't have anything like the same heat to it these days as Chelsea - Liverpool does.

I think that moment Mourinho shushed them was the spark that really set the fuel on fire. :)
