John Stones

After everything is said and done, it's business. If Martinez fails this season and will drive Everton closer to the relegation zone than to the Europa league place, he'll be out on his ass. If he does even better than expected and overachieves, and a bigger richer club than Everton offers him a managerial position, he'll jump ship in a minute, like he did when he left Wigan for Everton. Whelan said at the time that "He (Martínez) feels he's not the man to lead us back into the Premier League" (he was the right man to get them relegated, that's for sure).

If Stones gets seriously injured tomorrow or has a string of poor performances, loses form etc etc and will eventually become your run-of-the mill average PL defender and Everton will find someone better, they'll sell him and bring in a replacement and those precious fans whose feeling he'd hurt would forget him the next day. None of that decency, respect, true Evertonian spirit and whatever the hell else would matter. Players are commodities for the clubs and it's business at the end of the day. If you don't look out for your own interest, no one else would, and sometimes it means making tough decisions that some people may not appreciate.

Can't disagree with a word. However my initial reply was simply to say it was a little harsh for you to have a pop at Stones, calling him a 'weakling'!

There really isn't a lot more he could've done to join us apart from going on strike and I fully respect the fact he didn't go down that route.

A lot of bitter people in here and I don't understand why. Fair enough Martinez has said some stupid things but he's a manager who wants to keep his best players and he's managed to do that. No point in getting angry because Everton didn't bend over for us, fair play to them for keeping hold of Stones

As for people who are having a go at Stones, he handed his transfer request in and did everything like a true professional. He didn't go out to the media and slag the club off, he's got on with his job and gave his best for a club that gave him the chance in the Premier League at a young age. I'm sure he's a lot more gutted that he hasn't been able to move to us than any of us are and those slagging him off need to have a word with themselves. The maturity that he has shown in this whole scenario made me respect him a lot and hopefully he has a good season and we can still end up getting him down the line.

When he looks at the players around him like Baines and Jagielka who could have moved onto bigger clubs but decided to stay, and sees how they have won nothing and wasted their careers, it must be hard to stomach.

He handed in a transfer request and Everton rejected it along with our 3 or 4 bids, how has Stones decided to stay? I take it you wanted him to throw his toys out of the pram and go on strike?

I suggest you re-read it, if you think I said that.

Let me ask you this. If a year from now Chelsea comes back for Stones and Everton turns us down along with another TR rejection from Stones, do you think he should continue to be a good professional, respect his club and just get on with it? At what point he should start thinking what's important for him?

But that's hypothetical.

Right now he did what he could, he clearly wanted to play for us but unfortunately Everton wanted to hold onto their best prospect. Can't fault either party bar some bizarre comments from Martinez.

I maintain, calling Stones unambitous and in particular weak is well harsh.

I suggest you re-read it, if you think I said that.

Ah I mis-read what you put, apologies

There comes a time and a place where players need to look after themselves of course, but at the age of 21 he's chosen not kick off at the club who have given him his big break and for me that's commendable. We have all condemned Sterling for how he has handled his situation at Liverpool but there are people here who are condemning Stones for not doing the same thing and acting with class about the situation.

He's under contract, he has no right to demand to leave.

Martinez is an absolute class A daft w**ker. Coming on and saying that Stones "didn't mean to put in a transfer request.". S**t like that just doesn't happen by mistake or on accident.

Haha he said that? Fair play to him, sounds like he's taking the piss.

I don't think Everton have done anything wrong, Martinez has been a bit of a joke, especially with his factually inaccurate statements but then he's not used to handling questions/situations like this. Everton are not obliged to sell him but are they seriously going to challenge for anything this season? Or the next? No disrespect meant, I don't even mean the title but what about the FA & Carling Cups? Can they challenge for a Europa League spot let alone CL? Unless they get a 'Russian Gangster', to borrow a tiresome phrase, or the like then I would guess NO. Apart from the 2009 FA cup final have they ever looked like winning a trophy in the PL era?

Chelsea bid ridiculous money, John Stones handed in a transfer request and Everton refused to sell, everyone did what they had to and are entitled to do.

I think this whole saga whould have been a none-story if Martinez had not antagonized the process. We're usually pretty silent about our bids and the media would have only been involved at the end of the saga if either Everton had accepted or refused the proposed fees.

I don't think Stones is worth the money being quoted. He is a good, young English CB, but they will never sell him for the price we offering. I think come January or next summer, Stones might request a more improved contract if Everton wants to keep him or he'll ask for a transfer.

Yeah, apparently what he meant to do was cancel his milk for a week whilst he's on international duty, and somehow managed to put in a transfer request, these things happen.

Are you for real? It was Chelsea ignorance and sheer arrogance in pursuing a deal which was a no go all along which angered martinez. Your whole approach stunk to high heaven. Chelsea tried to use the media to their advantage on this one which rebounded even faster back in their face. As for buying the kid in January there is more chance of abramovich shopping in primark. Get a grip and let mourinho and Terry work their magic on your new signing.

How did Chelsea try to use the media? The only one talking about it was that midget gobsh*te Martinez, he never shut up about it.as for ignorance and arrogance, all Chelsea did was bid for a player, which I believe were allowed to do during the transfer window.

And were given encouragement via a TR.

The Everton fans genuinely think he 'London media' have tried to engineer this transfer and that they are reay biased towards Chelsea.

Really.

But the these are the same fans who wrote to the BBC to complain about Alan Shearer having the temerity to suggest Stones should sign for Chelsa. I actually saw posts on that terrifying forum of theirs comparing complaint letters.

Imagine taking football that seriously.

My take on this transfer saga is that every party has acted pretty much as they should (aside from some fans who will always be twats).

Chelsea ; identified a player they wanted and offered a fair sum for that player.

Jose; answered the questions put to him about the play and the bids. Possibly could have refused to answer them but would have been criticised for that.

Stones; saw the potential move as a bug opportunity and handed in a transfer request. When it was turned down he done the right thing and carried on playing his football. His time will come and he's showed good character throughout this saga.

Martinez; acted like a manager that doesn't want to lose one of his best players. Done everything he could to keep him. Would he jump ship if offered a top job? Probably, but that has no baring on how this has played out. He's done the best thing for his team.

Everton; they know their financial position much better than I do and they decided that none of our bids for Stones were sufficient for them to want to sell him. Stones is under contract, not unhappy where he is so they rightly expect him to continue playing for them to the best of his ability.

Just because it didn't go in our favour doesn't mean everyone on the other side behaved wrongly.

What approach are you talking about?

God forbid we put in a bid for an Everton player. Do Everton open with their maximum bid when you go in for players?

Now you are being ignorant to facts. I try not to have to repeat myself but you asked a question. The media were informed before each bid and comments made by Chelsea staff were designed to unsettle a player being given the freedom to learn his trade under martinez. Had this not been the case then this might have had some legs but please admit you club made a mess on this

I'm sure all the Everton fans would believe Martinez and the crap about the accidental transfer request.

I'm sure you believe substituting Jt was not a publicity stunt either. Your managers arrogance will eventually be your downfall.
