John Stones

Name me 1 english player of today generation that is actually world class?  I really don't get the hype about this stone..

There isn't one which is why we should nurture those who have the potential to be very good, if not world class. The hype is based on his ability at a young age and the fact he's English.

Already world class? there isn't one.

Potential to one day be one of the best in their role one day? Shaw, Barkley, Sterling, Kane, Alli all have something special. I think this is a generation of players that might actually do something, they don't seem like the Wilshere's and Walcott's anymore. England might actually be producing talent for once.

Jack Whilshire a footballer with world class talent

It's just a shame that world class talent is only related to his ability to get injured and be a general all-round bellend in every aspect of life. But he is a footballer with world class talents none the less.

  • 2 weeks later...

He's one of the poorest starting central defenders in the league this year.

He's 21. Young players are always inconsistent and the most important thing is that they get proper coaching, which he isn't. For me it's sad to see a young talent being wasted.

But looking on Twitter, I just can't get over the glee with which some people are seeing this whole thing. I don't know if it's an English thing, because I can name lots of other young English players who have been torn to shreds by the media for being young, rich and fairly successful at an early age, but it's like people wait for these players to have a weak moment (because we all do, especially when we're young) to pounce.

He's talented, he's different because he looks to play the ball but people want to write him off because....I don't know. I could hazard a guess but I'll leave that for now. I hope he gets put in a better situation either at Everton or elsewhere so that he can reach his potential as a player, and the same goes for Ross Barkley.

So Glad we didn't sign him. To be fair, although he was poor last night, it did appear he was struggling with an illness. But as good as he can be on the ball, he still has a LOT to learn and for the sums of money we were being asked to part with - well it just didn't stack up, especially as we already have Christensen on our books.

Can see him ending up at City or Utd but if they pay anything over £20m then they're mugs.

I'm glad we didn't him, not because I think he's overrated or anything like that but because I would rather see use Ake who is already at the same level but lacks that couple of inches in height (Never stopped Carvalho though) or Christensen who is proving himself at a very good level.

Don't think so, he would develop very nicely under Pep at City and playing next to Smalling at United would be good for him as well.

I think ake could do well at left centre back. He has an amazing leap on him.

Christensen will more than likely have a slump of some sort next season, and he's by no means the finished article.

I've watched Christensen for years and most of the criticisms that people have levelled at Stones could be levelled at him too. The reason is that they're both young. In fact Rio Ferdinand had similar criticisms when he was coming through but he became world-class under Fergie and even O'Leary took him on leaps and bounds.

If Stones is available for £20 million then I think we'd be mugs not to get him. £50 million was never going to happen and was a joke figure, but I honestly think that £30 million was the sweet spot for both clubs.

I agree - not a lot between Christensen & Stones but the first is already ours so why part with huge sums of money when we already have as good and Zouma on the way back (and hopefully more academy prospects coming through the ranks). £30m would still be way too much for Stones IMO.

I think ake could do well at left centre back. He has an amazing leap on him.

I think that's something he's been worked really hard on cause I've been watching Ake closely even since he joined and I don't recall him ever being so good in the air.

Mentality, he's got the making of a great center back. Positioning is spot on, knows when to tackle, etc but his physicality has lead to him being shoved to left back or moved further forward into midfield which is slightly more forgiving when it comes to strength and speed.

Shame really as his qualities would make him standout as a very good center back but when he's playing left back or defensive midfielder, his best qualities like passing and reading of the game are things most left backs and defensive midfielders have these days so he doesn't standout whatsoever. People say he looks average, which always winds me up, well that would be a big reason as to why.

I didn't say that. Stones is a better player than Christensen in my opinion. Stones could also be in the squad next season whereas Christensen apparently can't.

For me, you have to play a ball-playing defender alongside Zouma in a defensive two because he's poor at that. Conte likes players who can bring the ball out and Stones is the closest English player to Bonucci.

Ake to me can be a great midfielder or even a great full-back. Possibly in a defensive three he could be a good left centre-back but I honestly don't know if he could make it as a centre-back in a defensive two (exception to the rule being Cannavaro).

Next year a defensive grouping of JT, Cahill, Stones, Zouma, Ake and Miazga would be fine by me.

I'll be surprised if Ake ever becomes a great left back, that role limits his abilities far too much. He can do a job there and be very reliable but I would hate for that to be his full time position.

He can be more expressive in midfield but again, he won't stand out. I'm sure he will be a good midfielder but to be great he will have to be able to do things others can't and as much as I like him, I don't really see that. I fear he would end up like Mikel if played in midfield for the rest of his career, not ability wise but in terms of wasted potential.

Center back is the only position where his qualities make him unique enough to go on to be truly great and whenever he has played there he's always looked better in my opinion but hey ho, what do I know. Our coaches seem to think he's better at left back and to be honest as long as he plays regularly for us I'll be happy.

He was impressive for us when he got a run under Rafa in midfield and he outshone Mikel every time they played together. He's far more dynamic, far more willing to make an ambitious pass and he's got a brilliant engine on him.

I think with a couple more inches (height-wise!) he'd be a perfect defender but he's still quite skinny too. That doesn't mean he couldn't play there, but I think he's more suited to midfield.

Going back to Christensen, I wouldn't be that surprised if he moved into midfield. He's got all the qualities needed and he's still young. It's just a shame he's not likely to come back during Conte's first season because every spot could be up for grabs.

That's where we differ then as I think Christensen is as good as Stones if not better, despite being a year younger. So we don't have to splash out ludicrous and inflated sums of money.

Of course, none of us have a crystal ball to see who will develop into the better player in 4-5 years time but right now, for the little between them (IMO), you cannot justify the massive transfer fee Everton are seeking.

It's interesting to hear you say that. Let's just say I disagree.

I think his head was turned majorly in the Summer and as a 20/21 year old his head has probably been in a cloud. Where are the leaders at Everton? You know JT would have got in his ear and he would have flourished.

I feel sorry for him, I know he's continued to earn money blah blah blah but (ignoring our amazing form this season) he's been stuck in a team/club that continues to underachieve and have never shown signs of improving in the last 10 or so years. What did keeping him achieve? Do Everton really think they could have challenged for something this season? They should have taken the money and invested. That said, I think that cocky sh*te of a manager has contributed massively to their form this season. Finds himself singing the Jone Stones song in the shower? What a complete muppet, most stupid managerial comment since facht facht facht.
