Okay with an apparant 3rd bid looming we will hopefully see a conclusion on this matter soon, I can't see us going back with a 4th.

Wont have to if this bid hits 34m in some way id guess.   £30m on its own will be knocked back, think the papers are correct on that one

Lot of critique on here directed at both us and everton over this. How about at stones?

If he really wants to join he should slap in a public transfer request. He has not? Why? To save face with the everton faithful, for fear we won't follow through if he did? Or the more likely wanting a larger cut of the deal for both himself and his agent.

Same can be said of baba. When negotiations go smoothly, like they did when we signed begovic, there is no need for a request. But this and baba have not gone so, and I find it off putting that they are doing little to help make the moves happen.

The reason for submitting a transfer request is to force through a deal when your parent club has no intentions of selling.

Ausburg were always going to sell, it was just a case of settling on a suitable financial package for them. They stood to make a huge profit on a player they had signed for peanuts only a year ago regardless.

As for Stones, apparently he has made his wishes to leave clear to Everton and the fact that we have received enough encouragement to return with two revised bids suggests that Everton (despite what they say publically) are open to the idea of selling but again it's a case of Chelsea structuring a deal that they agree to.

In neither case I don't think a transfer request from the player would change the chances of the deal being completed.

Contrast to our pursuit of Rooney a couple of years ago. We'd (allegedly) been given encouragement by the player that he was open to leaving but United were never going to part with him easily... We submit a bid, registered our interest but then we needed Rooney to signal his intent to leave for United to ever consider selling.

Lol gem you have a point there. You do as well fc but. I just feel that if those boys really want to join us they should make it publically clear. Help our negotiations for them.

You cannot deny this stones situation is needlessly messy.

With quality English players,it's the timing that matters. We need to get him now before goes elsewhere. See Rooney as an example. United got in there early and undoubtedly they have got their money's worth.

We should really be spending £30m on right sided AM but we need to get Stones before he becomes unavailable.

I get the argument for saying that the transfer window can be distracting for players but if it was only open when the season was not in progress you would firstly need to abolish the January transfer window all together.

Would clubs be comfortable going into a new season knowing they have no opportunities to bring in reinforcements during a season? A couple of hefty injuries and clubs with smaller squads are screwed.

Then you have the issue that not all leagues start at the same time... So does the window open at different times depending on which country you are based in.

Would for example clubs in Italy be unable to approach a club in England if the English window is shut but the Italian one is still open?

Logistically you're never going to please everyone. You just have to suck it up and accept that it's part of the game.

They should just open the window a month earlier, on June 1st and have it finish on August 1st, before all the major European leagues start.

I don't have a problem with it as a fan. But I can see why managers aren't keen.

But then you're overlapping with American leagues... So how do you get around that?

Like I said it's an imperfect system.

They always get bailed out though and they don't usually sell star players unless it's to raise funds for another star player

Exactly right Bob. Thing with those high prestige clubs like Real, Man Utd., Barca, Bayern, etc. is that they can accrue high levels of debt and still operate relatively normal. They are such huge names that whoever they are loaning money from has the confidence in the brand of the club that they will eventually be able to pay their debt.

I agree you can't please everyone, but I don't think the American leagues should come into it, as they have a completely different football calender.

I think the only downside would be teams not knowing whether they would have champions league revenue for the following season, as qualifying wouldn't have been completed. Which in turn could affect budget, and targets etc.

For me there's 2 options, no one's allowed to sign players during the months the league is on, or scrap the window entirely. This one is just daft, players still looking to move almost a month in, then again looking for a move in December. Just causes so much unnecessary mess and unrest.

I think option one should be the best way to go, and scrap the January window aswell.

It was far better when clubs could sign anyone upto mid March. This allowed for reinforcements when required due to injuries or positional need, it also allowed for more short term loans for players who were out of favour, recovering from injury or from the youths.

I think with the buying power of the richest clubs it would be controversial these days.

The rich always could buy then too, it did though help the poorer teams too by them not having to keep massive squads throughout the season.
