I always thought they weren't deliberately underperforming, but what with all the talk and today's vast improvement I'm very confused

I suspect the lack of confidence that comes from results constantly going against you might have played a part. With Mourinho leaving it allows them to turn over a new leaf, psychologically.

Also, Sunderland are not very good.

Zouma is good on the ground, but he has been frustrating from balls into the area at times this season. He losses his man a bit too often. Hopefully as he get's older he get's better with that.
