Fancy seeing this. Suppose it's all the good 'ole USA winning the war single handedly again though?

That is a brilliant film:

'you must have killed a lot of Elephants'

'Yes, i use a machine gun'

I don't think Zulu can be faulted. I've seen it certainly over 20 times and never tire of it.

Isn't it tigers, not elephants?

Me too, probably a couple of hundred. Got the poster, film cell, calendar, books on how the film was made.  :blush2:

It is tigers! :-)

It's a pity that Zulu Dawn was not as good as the first film. It is very watchable however. Perhaps there were too many aspects of Isandlwana to pull together a tight story.

Watched interstellar last night,  the new highly rated Machonigea (or however he spells it) film.

I can see how and why people rate it so highly, the scrip and direction are excellent but in the end I can’t say I’m bought in to the hype. Actually might be best described of 2.5 hours of hopless woe, quite slow for the most part with the odd action packed moment. The attempt at a happy ending is weak and really just leaves a load of un-answered questions.

Gone girl-

Strange thriller which keeps your attention for the full length. Interesting film but has a few shocking moments. Bit gross. And very weird. 7.5/10

Watched it myself the other night, thought it was very good. Agreed about the gross part, especially that scene where she's in bed with Neil Patrick Harris. One of those films where you have to pay close attention throughout though, unfortunately my mind was often elsewhere.

I finally got round to a couple of films this week.

American Hustle, nowhere near as good as I'd hoped, in fact fairly poor.

Worlds End, I actually turned off after about an hour, utter crap!

I find Zulu Dawn watchable purely because I enjoy the battle scenes but it's not a great film, especially in comparison to Zulu. The first half of the film in Natal isn't great and the cast is poor. I like Zulu partly because they didn't have the token American actor which was deemed necessary to appeal to an American audience, but often makes it unrealistic. Burt Lancaster was exactly that in Zulu Dawn, and didn't do very well, in my opinion.

I still watch it now and then when it's on Channel Five or More4 but the DVD I have rarely gets watched. It's also because I read extensively about the Zulu War after seeing Zulu and before watching Zulu Dawn, so when I did watch it I couldn't help going "well that didn't happen" constantly. (I realise this is me being silly  ) but it still bugs me when watching it and seeing inaccuracies.

I loved Gone Girl and really want to see it again, the last 15 minutes did annoy me though. They could have ended it far better.

One last post about Zulu Dawn Richard. I read (in The Washing of The Spears, I think) of a Zulu account of a British Infantryman who took his rifle and plenty of ammunition, climbed the steep hill behind the camp and holed-up in a cave. He was killed eventually when a group of Zulus gathered outside the cave and fired a volley into it. I haven't read of that story in many other books but it is the one thing I always think of, re Isandlwana. Brave lad he must have been, alone amidst the post-battle chaos.

I agree re. Lancaster - a good actor (i.e. in The Professionals) but miscast in Zulu Dawn.

I've read about that too, Spud. Several accounts I've read confirm that if he had just stayed in the cave he could have escaped after the battle. Instead of started firing down on Zulus so they realised he was there! Brave or stupid?! Another account of the battle I always remember is some Zulus stopping their attack to allow a British officer shake hands with his men before they were overrun and killed, due to how bravely they had fought. It's pretty touching.

As you say, enough about Zulus and Zulu Dawn  . The last Hobbit comes out in around a month, can't wait. Hope it's as good as the last Lord of the Rings.

I had high hopes for both of those films and was let down by both. American Hustle was rare in that I was actually looking forward to the ending. As for The World's End, I loved the Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz but The World's End was terrible. They shouldn't have swapped the two main characters around.

The Raid 2, the story felt a bit all over the place but then you see a whole punch of people getting their faces slammed into a wall you kind of stop caring and just enjoy the ridiculously brilliant fight scenes.

Not quite as good as the first and with a 2.5 hour running time it's pretty long for what is essentially an action film but well worth a watch if you like a well choreographed fight scene (baseball bat boy and hammer girl being a highlight for me).

conventional war movie 6.5/10

What about Interestelar?

NEIGHBORS, a comedy about a young couple suffering from arrested development who are forced to live next to a fraternity

house after the birth of their newborn baby…Seth Rogen, Zac Efron and Rose Byrne lead the cast of Neighbors…

I really laughed with this comedy! :)
