I'm sure transfer fees aren't of major importance to a lot of you, but I was a little curious as I genuinely can't remember how much he cost. I'm referring to his original move from Santos, rather than when we took him on permanently after his "loan" to PSV.

Brought up because of a Liverpool fan I know saying they couldn't have done a whole lot better with the £2 million they wasted on that Greek lump Soti (lol).

And to give the thread some extended purpose, who has been our best bargain buy?

One euro was the fee paid to take him back from PSV, bootboy. I mean when we originally bought him from Santos back in 2004.

Totally agree, goose. He should be first choice ahead of Carvalho these days. At the risk of splitting opinions, he was our best defender last season.

i think we may have initially bought him for 10mil. Cant find where i have read that before though sorry. Worth every penny of it

best bargain... thats a good question. maybe ballack because we didnt pay a single euro to sign him

yup that along with his 120,000pound a week wages makes him a real bargain

interestingly, he's also the only player on the wage bill.

Just had a look online and all i can find is alex was on a joint contract with us and p.s.v with him going onloan for 3 years and us having a 1 euro buyout. So i presume we got him for free had work permit problems so done a deal with p.s.v which ment they got a good player and a bit of cash for helping us sort work permit, but then again i may be wrong again lol :D

No, we bought him from Santos for money. Rumoured to be between £4m and £10m... although I had heard it was £8m.

I have no idea how much was paid for Alex but I would say that Carlo Cudiccini rates way up high on the bargain stakes. I believe he cost just a few thou, having recently returned from a prolonged spell of injury.

Kakuta only cost us a big mac meal, hell of a bargain if you ask me.

rumours are thats wengers favourite way too, that and a car full of puppys.

Alex is one of my favourite Chelsea players, and at a good age that he can cover for Carvalho as he starts his innevitable decline. Remember that belter of a free-kick he scored in 07/08(?) against Boro(?) haha

I don't think he cost a lot, but I don't know the actual figure.

Tore Andre Flo was bought for about £200k, we got several superb years from him then sold him to Rangers for about £11million when he was on his way down. now thats how to sign a player.

Yeah, thought it was about the 5 million mark, but then I'm not overly sure how much we paid in regards to his wages while he was at PSV, so the total price may be a lot more than that.

Flo is a great shout DKW, probably some of the best business that we've been involved in for a while.

Carlo is a good shout too. Joe Cole I don't think was too much either. Lampard's fee for what he became, is a pitance. Don't think we paid too much for Zola either, nor do I think we were held to randsom too highly for Gudjohnsen.
