ruptured his Achilles apparently while playing for milan tonight, probably the end of his england career too cos I can't see him being picked again...unfortunate for the bloke, but joe's chances have been given a lift

That's not good - I can't think of a worse injury for a footballer. And at 35, you wonder if a year of rehabilitation is worth the late-in-life comeback.

exactly what I thought brit- this improves joe's chances.

it's a shame for the guy, and I think for us too. it takes away a very good option to bring on if needed. there isn't another player who can provide what he does.

it's not a severe blow for england, but it is a blow. with walcott injured /out of form and lennon also out for who knows how long, going to the world cup relying on swp doesn't make you all that confident.

Apparently it's not a year of rehabilitation, but it seems he's definitely out of the World Cup:

"To start kicking and playing football will take about three months," stated Dr Orava. "For maximal performances and maximum kicks and jumps, maybe it takes one month more, three to four months before one is able to do light playing."

Feel sorry for Becks, I know hes done some odd things (wearing Dresses etc) but hes done well to stay pretty level headed being one of the most famous footballers of our time.

He is still a good player and showed it again when he came on for Milan at OT, lovely volley and some good crosses one at least that Inzaghi should have converted.

I think Milner looks capable and hope Capello takes Joey along as back up..would help his confidence if the England manger showed some belief although on form and performance this season it looks unlikely.

Why the hell are they asking Malouda about Beckham's injury during the press UCL press conference? What does it have to do with tomorrow's match?

I wouldn't have had him in the squad anyway.

i would have, he would have been perfect to bring on for the last 15 minutes of a game we are chasing, as seen by the way he lifted ac v man u last week.

I agree definatley would have taken him. Not saying he would be in the starting XI but he would have been great to bring off the bench. His experience would have been good (although fair enough they are all very experienced now), and he was by far milans best player the other night imo.

Shame for the bloke, would have been a good way to end his international career, but for me that has to be it for him now. Even though undoubtedly he will come back and play club football again there is no point playing him in the national side in the qualifying campaign when he wont be in the EURO 2012 finals.

I subscribe to the view that all players in the squad should if required be able to play for a full 90 minutes and I'm sorry but Beckham just didn't fit into that category anymore. So for me his potential inclusion in the squad would have been an ill affordable luxury and to some extent a token gesture. Not something that should be considered if we are serious about winning the Would Cup.

I'm inclined to agree with that.

Feel sorry for him but the only real down-side is the lack of form and/or injury situation with Lennon, Walcott and SWP. If 2 or all 3 of them were all playing to their capabilities Beckham wouldn't get a look in anyway. Hopefully, at least one of them will be in some kind of form come June?

For Englands chances, lets just be thankful it isn't Rooney.

I agree totally. This is possibly the best thing that could have happened for England, as now Capello can pick a player who is fully fit and able to complete a game. Beckham is way past his best, and the way he's being allowed to build up his number of international caps with cameo appearances is a joke, and an insult to the likes of Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton.

Must be honest, I never rated Beckham anyway - OK, he could pass and cross a ball brilliantly, but then so could most people who played in his position in top class football. The only reason he became famous was for a freak goal against Wimbledon, and the fact that a lot of tarts fancied him. Then he married a freak, and the rest is history. Just my opinion, like... ;)

Yeah, BB I've been saying that for years! Most folks in my region couldn't name another Euro footballer besides Beckham, and I tell them he's a one-trick player and media produced brand.

Don't think this will hurt the English side June 12th. That said, I wouldn't wish this injury on anyone. Maybe his teammate GG.

And Maksimov, still can't see him playing in a match for the better part of a year. He won't even be walking right 5 months from now.

I'd like to see cole in the squad, but I'd rather he upped his game to get there rather than stepping over a fallen squad member! That said, we all know he's quality (well most of us..) and I'd take him despite current form.

As for Becks, he may not be a 90 minute player anymore but he brought a lot to the squad, not least in experience, and definitely gives England something when he comes on. He definitely wasn't dead weight!

Same here.

Feel sorry for the fella, (same as I would most other players), because it's a nasty injury but I think this does us a favour WC wise.

I feel bad for him too, and with his awesome crossing skills, he deserved a place on the England squad, since no one can cross better than him.

On those same lines, why not include Rory Delap in the England squad (he is English, right?). With his great throw-ins in the attacking end of the pitch, he would wreck havoc with most squads that England faces.

The answer to your question is the same answer to the question 'Why is Delap only playing for Stoke City?'

I understand your point, Loz, but it is why someone like Peter Crouch must be on the team. And, if there was an 8 foot tall person who had a modicum of football skills (i.e., can head the ball passably), I would jump at putting him on the team (any team) as well. Having someone with an unusual skill, such as a throw-in specialist or a super-tall player who can score when you absolutely need a goal and nothing else has worked (Dick Nanninga, anyone?), is a good thing to have on a World Cup squad, if you can spare a place or two for such players.

I think the injury ends up being a blessing for England. It looks like Beckham was going to be on the team if he deserved it or not. I'm not sure Capello could have or would have thought it was worthwhile to deal with keeping him off the team. Now this decision is made for him and he avoids the entire circus, plus England can still tote him around as the face of the 2018 bid. It looks like a win for everyone, save Beckham himself obviously.

Feel gutted for the guy, and also a lil mad

mad you ask?

Ive spent the whole day explaining to everyone and their dog over here that Englands WC hopes arent dead now.

The whole day explaining that he wouldnt of even started...

the whole day explaining that every Englishman wouldnt give him their own ACL just to have him fit in time.....

A lot of people over here essentially thought his importance to England wasnt even matched by Rooney.

if anything positive can be taken from this, however, is that it takes this decision out of Capellos hand, for good or bad.

He is already going to have enough controversy when he picks his squad, atleast this one bit is gone.

Plus who knows, this could of happened game 1 in the WC....maybe a blessing in disguise?

I'm sure he will. It would help though if he got some decent playing time on the pitch!!
