Chelsea have joined the race for Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne.

 
The Premier League leaders are ready to go head-to-head with Manchester United for the England right back.
 
United boss Louis Van Gaal has made signing defender Clyne one of his top summer transfer targets.
 
But he is now facing competition from Chelsea, who have made checks on Clyne this season and earmarked him as a potential signing to help increase their number of home grown players.
 
Clyne, rated at around £15m, joined Saints in 2012 and his current deal expires in 2016.
 
Southampton want him to extend his stay at St Mary's but Clyne, 23, is in no rush to sign a new contract and looks set to assess his options in the summer

Really don't see the need. We already have 3 excellent FB's.. and Brana is showing no signs of stopping, I mean he's getting better. Filipe Luis is very good, wouldn't be long when he establishes himself as #1 LB in the team.

Clyne wouldn't get a sniff if he came here for quite some time.

Yeah.

So we would need to promote from within and stick with what we have unless we get shot of Mikel/Ramires to bolster options.

With Schurrle and Salah leaving and Cuadrado coming in we have room for one more. I personally think Ramires will be gone next season so that will leave us with 2 positions at least. If we could feel those positions up with Varane and Pogba i would be more than happy. Bringing them here will be incredibly difficult though.

I actually rate Clyne highly he's been quality this season, defo think the manc scum bought the wrong full back. He can play left and right back and is still young and english so might be worth going in for him.

This squad needs more depth. I know we'll have a lot of added money to spend this summer but I do hope our squad is supplemented for better rotation.

 

Squad depth isn't an issue in our squad, it's the quality of that depth in certain areas. 

 

Central midfield, in my opinion, could be improved by a good quality addition, whenever Matic or Fabregas don't play it is extremely evident. 

 

Same goes for the attacking midfield, I feel we have been too reliant on Hazard, Willian and Oscar. Obviously we have bought in Caudrado but he's made no impact in his first month so the jury is still out, I wouldn't be surprised to see a new attacking option arrive in the summer. 

 

Seen us linked with Rob Green too. 

 

Can't say I'm liking any of these rumours right now. 

Rob Green would be a good choice if Petr leaves. Plenty of experience, doesn't have to relocate and he's looked pretty decent when I've seen him this season. Plus he's homegrown. Not out of contract until next season but if QPR go down then maybe he becomes available.

I think there's a sense that Cech will be gone in the summer even though I'd love him to stay here but in the event of that happening we'll definitely need a back up to Courtois obviously especially with Schwarzer gone to Leicester now.

 

Out of the two I'd prefer Green purely because he's younger than Friedel. Both are decent goalkeepers but the age factor sways me towards Green out of the two and he's a solid goalkeeper in my opinion.

    Only if we sell Ramires or Mikel, the foreign thing will be an issue again.

    I thought that at the start of the season. On his day he is a very good player, able to get stuck in defensively as well as pick a pass. If Jose thought he could regain his 2011/12 form then I think he is a nice combination of Mikel's defensive solidity and positional sense and Ramires's ability going forward. Obviously it's hard to come close to Ramires's physical attributes but I think we'd control games better with someone like him.

     

    Think someone like Khedira is more likely though.

    Kehdeira remains half the season injured...

     

    How bad are his fitness issues recently? If he's a proper sicknote then it's pointless but at the end of his contract, he's got to be worth a look??
