Lamps calls for new Drogba deal

Featured Replies

Sorry Frank but it's not your decision (thankfully).

The "old guard" have given us a brilliant end to the season but this season will have little to do with next season and the season after that.

I expect Drogba to leave in the summer and he'll be going out on a high.

Would be mental not to give him an extended deal. Still the best there is.

The past month has shown he is anything but past it, I would love us to have him there for games next season. Though he wont play every game he can still produce when needed, he is still an absolute monster of a player.

And if Torres should lose form who is there to lead the line. I'm starting to think that Sturridge will face a lifetime of what could have beens due to his selfishness and/or lack of intelligence on the pitch, Lukaku looks like he needs a season before he's going to be anywhere near ready and although both Bamford and Feruz look promising I can't see either of them getting any more than the odd League Cup game off the bench. Letting Didier go for the sake of an extra 12 months on his contract could turn out to be one of the biggest errors of the Roman era. I'd like to see him stay at the club beyond his playing days in whatever role could be found to suit him, his influence and popularity worldwide would do the club no harm whatsoever and I fear that if we let him go it'll be to our detriment.

He's been a great player for us, but if we're ever going to get out of this system we play of lumping it up to a big man up front, and allow the likes of Torres and any future purchases to play a game that suits them, people like Drogba have to move on.

He needs to stay, let them go gradually, why have a mass clear out of people who are still performing? Makes no sense. Gradual implementation of new players/system is the only answer. AVB tried changing things in an instant and look what happened.

This is just an example of people holding onto the past. He is nowhere near the "best there is." Ya, he as been great recently, but he was poor leading up this this run he is on. Holding onto the older players would hurt the club in the long run. I love these players as much as everybody else, but it is bad for the club not to invest in the future.

No its not, its an example of seeing a player who is still a massively influential forward that we would be mad to get rid of. As for invest in the future, as far as I can see they are, pretty much every player we have signed in the past few years is young and hungry.

Who is better then? Benzema? Higuain? Hulk? Gomez? Rooney? I don't think any of those are fit to lace Drogba's boots. And if you say, Torres, I will personally find out where you live and come round and strangle you!

As an all round forward with the ability to win a game almost single-handedly Drogba is still peerless. As dkw has said he is a monster of a player and I think it will be a very, very long time before we get another even half as good.

Drogba is still the best in the world when in form, but he's only in form for 10-15 games a year nowadays. Given how he tends to elevate his performance for the biggest games, those 10-15 games are often quite valuable ones, so I could justify bringing him back for one more year. I think he still has just enough in the tank for that. Two years is out of the question, though. If he's dead set on that, then god bless you Didier and thanks for everything, but I'd have to decline.

He only comes good in the later stages of the season, has been the case for the past couple of seasons, when almost every game is high intensity, cup-finalesque.

He really has been pretty poor in a majority of this season. Therefore he needs to go, going on a high is a bonus for him really.

Maybe we can resign him in the Jan window on loan to play the cup finals next season.

You are joking, right? Drogba is 33 going on 34, I believe. The others you mention are all in their 20s. Drogba would be a good squad player, and can put in a great match every so often, but let's not kid ourselves and think that age has not caught up to him, and it does to all strikers in their 30s. A one-year deal? Yes. A two-year deal? Sorry, No.

Why do you think I am joking Phillip? Because they are younger does that automatically mean they are better? I don't think so, and I wouldn't swap Drogba for any of them at the moment. You obviously feel that Drogba still has something to offer as you would give him a one year extension. One year, two years, I don't see the relevance because for me that isn't the issue. The issue is the overall strength of our team. And until we get someone who proves he is consistently as good, or better, then losing Drogba makes us a significantly weaker team. It really is that simple.

Gomez has 40 goals this year and he is only 26. That is consistent play for the whole year. Drogba disappeared for most of the season. We got into a hole. Now, all of a sudden we have games that mean a lot and he decides to start playing at a high level. You are telling me that Drogba is better than Gomez, right now?

By the way, Higuain has 26 goals, Hulk has 20, Rooney has 34, Benzema has 32.

Drogba has 12 goals.

You don't have much of an arguement.

I doubt Drogba would have disappeared if he were getting service from Ribery, Robben, Schweinsteiger, Kroos, etc...

Right now, I'd take Drogs over Gomez without a moment's hesitation. Obviously not for the future, but then again Gomez wouldn't even sniff my shortlist in that regard either.

If Drogs is happy with the idea that he will maybe start half of our games then I would happily give him two more years. If he is wanting to be a week in week out starter with the odd rest here and there then we would maybe need to thank him for tremendous service and part ways on a good note.

When Drogs leaves Chelsea he can be spoken about in the same breath as Ossie and as ahead of King Kerry (and that is a hell of a statement)

rooney's better. these days, that isn't in question surely?

drogba's shown he can still raise himself to the highest level when called upon, but I don't think he can sustain it over a season. every striker you've named (well perhaps not gomez, I've not been overly impressed whenever I've seen him) would give us more over the course of a season.

if you put the drogba of 2012 in for 38 league games or any of the others I reckon we'd have more points with the others.

torres hasn't shown enough to be an automatic first choice season. but neither has didier IMO. and torres isn't going to leave.

you don't have to wring every last drop of quality out of a player before you let them go. ferguson let many players go with loads of miles left in their tank because it was to the overall benefit of the team.

cech, terry, lamps and drogba have carried this side for nearly a decade. cech could have another decade, and terry could have at least two seasons, but I don't think the latter two should be starters next season. this CL final coming up really dos feel like the end of an era. it's time to pay tribute to this great group and then break it up.

Sign for a year Didier you know it makes sense, produce next year and the offer of a further year will be on the table then. The club are being sensible in this approach we have other players who will soon be in a similar situation contractwise, precedents are now being set. We can no longer afford to squander money, leaner days are ahead with FFP. Rolling contracts are the way forward for the older generation, it gives them an incentive to play with the next year in mind but also gives them the opt out if they want more playing time.
