Hi guys, i was just looking back at some of the old topics that were started and i came across a few about Ashley Cole, should we sign him or not? Is he good enough? Well im glad he signed and also makes you think how much we have achieved over the last few years, especially winning the CL.

And think of all the great players we have had at the club.

Funny you picked out that post cause I was looking at the same a few weeks back.

Its a shame that we didn't have a backup of the old CSR forum to carry on with, when this forum started - It would have been interesting to see what people said about players like Drogba and Lampard at the time.

This forum had deleted quite a few thousand topics during a server move a few years back, so there isn't as many old topics as there should of been.

I'm not ashamed to say that in their first seasons I thought lampard was a hard worker but nothing more, drogba useless and clumsy, bosingwa the answer to our right back problems, Cole not as good as bridge and gallas far better than Terry. Apart from that though...

Any other confessions? I was also a bit sad that I lost my old username on the old csr site

I always thought Lampard was overpriced and would amount to nothing more than an average squad player, whoopsie....

It can be really fun to do that. I started a similar topic this summer, and found some gems like us being linked to a midfielder from Zagreb only for most of the replies to be "who?" and "not Chelsea quality!"

Good call. I recall being somewhere on the wrong side of history in the Cole debate. I wanted nothing to do with the guy after his reputation and days at Arsenal, and I couldnt understand pushing Billy Gallas out the door at LB, after he had filled in there and done so admirably for 2 years. But really, my feelings about Cole were the main thing.

Thankfully, as some posters suggested then, I quickly forgot about his past and enjoyed his play as the best LB on the planet.

The Modric thing is funny too. At the time, Chelsea was not exactly a breeding ground for young talent to get playing time and blossom. With Modric, a bunch of big clubs were clearly after him when Spurs signed him, but I wasnt all that fussed at the time. With Lampard, Essien, Ballack, Makelele, how could we be? I thought a player like Modric wouldve turned into another Scott Parker.

I make an ass out of myself in every post I make, no need to remind myself of it lol

Actually, I don't know how many howler calls I've made, but I'm sure there have been many

So right about the CSR Mod, some real Chelsea old boys on there, too bad there's no archive.

That said I think you guys do a hell of a job these days on the Shed End.

I remember being on CSR when Roman first arrived, the amount of people who were dubious about it (including me obviously) was brilliant, I would love to revisit the threads from that time.

I may be wrong but I praised Drogba, Ashley Cole and Makelele to the hilt.

Questioned Shevchenko, Ballack and Malouda - and stuck the boot in consistently.

Loved and hated Gallas for obvious reasons and marvelled about Joey Cole when we signed him.

Hand on heart would say I had my early doubts about Lampard but was cute enough to keep them

to myself !

Always praised Lampard.

After his first season didn't think Drogba was fit to wear the shirt.

Thought John Terry was world class straight away.

Didn't like Gallas or Cole.

Noticed Makelele's importance to Chelsea instantaneously.

Few right and wrong's in my opinion beforehand! Drogba/Cole one's have changed dramatically!

You had some good knowledge with 12 years of age.

Wouldn't he have been 4 when JT made his debut.

Normally kept my opinions to myself, except maybe having the odd pop at Drogba. I really thought him sh*t at first with awful control which would never wear it in the prem. really hated the way he went down with the slightest touch. Even to this day, although I appreciate his performances and importance to the club, I can never really consider him as a Chelsea Legend.

At one of the piss ups I had a chat with Just about Drogba and Just defended him to the hilt predicting that he would be great for Chelsea. Kudos to Just, although he has yet to convince me about Sturridge.

Drogba's first season I wanted to hire an assasin to take him out, give him something to really roll around at.

Completely the same. I was always thinking "he could be a monster if he stopped arseing about so much!"

I thought Lampard was a decent midfielder from the Spammers.

I allso wanted us to sign Torres from Athletico.

i was very annoyed by drogba's antiques, complaining in media and on the pitch and his lack of composure in front of the goal during his first season at our club, but he played a difficult role since he was isolated all alone up front with his nose pointing away from goal 90% of the times. i don't think there's anyone else that could have played the exact same role as good as drogba did, other than an improved drogba, which we saw especially in 06-07.

i still hold his two performances against bayern munich in 04-05 as the best striker performances i've ever seen from a player, and that's a good and long 42 years as a chelsea- and football-supporter. the fact that he played against the then imo best defender in the world, lucio, made the performance even more.

i thought, and still thinks, that lampard is a player without any outstanding talent. however, his lacks in flair, skill, overhead kicks and rabonas doesn't overshadow the fact that he must be one of the mentally strongest player who's ever played football. add natural fitness most players would die for, or what do you say mr. injury stevieme, he proved his worth x 1000.

I thought Drogba was a cumbersome oaf in his first 2 seasons. I couldn't even decipher whether he was left or right-footed. But even then I acknowledged how essential he was to the team as the forwardmost target and at defending set pieces etc.

I've always felt that what Frank may, by his own admission, lack in natural talent and flair, he makes up for through discipline and resilience. The countless hours that he's spent of the training pitch have clearly paid dividends, something I admire about him in an age where I get the impression that most players just turn up and f*ck off as they please. Surely one of the most deadly goalscoring midfielders that football has seen? I can't think of any other CM's with stats to the same level as Frank.

When we signed Cole I was actually quite annoyed about the deal. Not only the acrimony of it, but the fact that Gallas went to Arsenal, who IMO had been instrumental to us winning the title back-to-back. I've not seen many players play all 3 positions in defense with such authority as him. All in all, I think we know who got the better end of that deal - Remember when Gallas was Arsenal captain and totally lost it in that infamous Birmingham game? That game pretty much begun a culture of crumbling which has blighted them ever since!

I was a massive Makelele fan and still wish we had him over any other player except for Drogba. Best pure, defensive/holding midfielder that the Premier League has seen.

I still don't think Ballack was as good as advertised - he played a deeper role for us than at Bayern Munich, and granted performed that well. But, although he did have some excellent games for us (one at home to ManU springs to mind) I still feel to this day that we never saw the same dominant, box-to-box centre mid who was at the heart of the Bayern team.

As for Sheva, it dawned on me rather quickly that he was going to flop. As soon as he signed for us it seemed as if his sharpness and pace stayed behind in Milan.

I admit i never thought much of Lamps or Drogba when they signed, i was impressed by how strong DD was.

I remember watching him warming up before a game and ha was running from the touch line to the centre circle and then quickly zig zagging around, he was fast!! But every time he fell and rolled about i would get really pissed off.

I loved Cudicini.

I loved Maka.

I adored Zola.

I had great hopes for Sheva :( and saying that for Weah too.

Casiraghi would have been good had he not got injured.

I hated Kezman and Kalou.

I wished we had got Ballack 4 years before we did!

Saying that i think all these players helped us shape into the team we are now, we could all write pages and pages of players we loved and hated but im kind of glad they all came to us.

Now we get to look forward to the next generation of Chelsea players and.............

WE ARE CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE!
